Hydrogen fuel cells may become the fuel source of the future. Since many consumers appear to be unimpressed with the expensive cost and limited range of plug-in battery cars, several prominent automakers have invested heavily in these fuel cells:
The Nissan TeRRA, a hydrogen fuel cell-powered SUV, was recently introduced at the Paris Motor Show. Honda, Toyota, Mercedez-Benz, Hyundai and Kia have all also announced that they will also be unveiling a new line of hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles in the near future.
However, the main problem facing hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles is, and will remain, a cost issue. Additionally, there are very few fueling stations out there, which makes putting volumes of cars out there impractical since there are not enough places to stop and power them up. There is no information on InsuranceTown.com or any other auto insurance site about how much it would cost to insure one of these vehicles, either.
These are questions that will have to be answered in the future – probably sooner than we may think. That’s because if anything is imminent, it’s the end of our reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels.
The good news for hydrogen fuel cell-vehicles – America has a huge supply of natural gas.
Why?
Presently, almost all hydrogen used in cars is made by separating molecules in natural gas.
