Spineless (The Invertebrate Song)
Another SOL song, this time by request, about vertebrates and invertebrates. Now available in HD! This covers material from Virginia Science SOL 5.5, while rocking out a bit, and perhaps a bit of cathartic venting at the same time. ;-) In each of these songs, I've tried to address the material in a way that will be fun for both kids and adults, and avoids "talking down." I recorded this straight into my macbook, using Garage Band, and put the movies together with iMovie. Lyrics: When we met, I respected you I thought that you had something special inside... Now I get it, I should have seen right through There was knowledge that I should have applied.... You're Spineless, I should have known You're an invertebrate, You've got no backbone. I thought you had a spinal column, but I see it's not true. I should have known I couldn't count on you. Now I know how to figure out What a vertebrate should always contain... Like a bird or a mammal or a snake or a trout They've got a spinal cord attached to their brain... But you're Spineless, I should have known You're an invertebrate, You've got no backbone. I thought you had a spinal column, but I see it's not true. I should have known I couldn't count on you. You're like a bug or a spider or a worm in the ground Like a squid or a jellyfish just flopping around Like a crab or an oyster hanging out in a shell You're an invertebrate... An invertebrate Oh... I should have known You're an invertebrate, You've got no backbone. I thought ...

DVD Description Our Invertebrates DVD looks at evolutionary trends like cephalization, segmentation, changes in body symmetry, increases in locomotive efficiency and the development of increasingly complex tissues and organs that occur as one goes from the sponges of phylum Porifera to the octopuses of class Cephalogoda. Structural, functional, and behaviorial adaptations unique to members of each of the invertebrate phyla including: Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Nemotoda, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Echinodermata are discussed in detail.

Octopus Tool Use: The World's Smartest Invertebrate
Science & Reason on Facebook: tinyurl.com Octopus Tool Use: The World's Smartest Invertebrate. The octopus is widely regarded as the worlds smartest invertebrate, and now a new study adds evidence to that claim. Those who work with cephalopods are not surprised; they know how intelligent these creatures are. In fact, we asked two of the Academys biologists about this finding. --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- Coconut-Carrying Octopus: Tool Use in an Invertebrate Scientists once thought of tool use as a defining feature of humans. That's until examples of tool use came in from other primates, along with birds and an array of other mammals. Now, a report in the December 14th, 2009 issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, adds an octopus to the growing list of tool users. • Learn more: www.sciencedaily.com --- Since 1853, the California Academy of Sciences has been dedicated to exploring, explaining, and protecting the natural world.
