Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba (Spanish: República de Cuba ), is a country comprising the islands of Cuba, Isla de la Juventud and several archipelagos in the Caribbean Sea. The capital and largest city Havana is 365 km (227 mi) from Miami, Florida. Geographically, Cuba is considered part of North America. Culturally, it is considered part of Latin America.
Prior to Spanish colonization in the late 15th century, Cuba was inhabited by Amerindian tribes. It remained a colony of Spain until the Spanish–American War of 1898, which led to nominal independence as a de facto U.S. protectorate in 1902. As a fragile republic, Cuba attempted to strengthen its democratic system, but mounting political radicalization and social strife culminated in the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1952. Further unrest and instability led to Batista's ousting in January 1959 by the July 26 movement, which afterwards established a government under the leadership of Fidel Castro. Since 1965, the country has been governed by the Communist Party of Cuba.

This is a Yuca; it's a root crop and it's really delicious if you steam it with garlic and onions and oil. We have a big giant...wow a big Papaya. I love papaya, it's delicious. Then I bought a Boniato; this is a Cuban sweet potato. Sometimes they're white, this one's more red. You can cook these like any other potato; you can mash th...
Here is an example of how a socialist system controls every aspect of your life. This is a booklet from Cuba, for rationing food to citizens. These very same controls could be implemented in America -- possibly worse! And it all starts with handing over the power of "emergency dictatorship" to the presidency.

The "libreta" as it is known began operating in July 1963 as a temporary measure to counter US sanctions. The ration books guarantee basic supplies to everyone, in theory. In practice there are shortages, Cubans are forced...
Here is one of our local guides explaining the system of food rationing.
Cuba's ration book - which regulates the sale of food at subsidised prices to Cubans - turns 50 on Friday. Full story: The longest standing food ration in modern history marks 50 years on Friday, perhaps its last before being eliminated as part of market-oriented reforms orchestrated by Cuban President Raul Castro. The law establishing the ration, known as the "libreta", was passed in 1962, with hundreds of ration stores finally opening on July 12, 1963. Castro, who replaced his ailing brother Fidel in 2008, has chided the ration ever since as "paternalistic" and "irrational and unsustainable". Eliminating the ration, first introduced as a temporary measure as U.S. sanctions weighed in, has proved perhaps the most controversial measure Castro has proposed. He has advocated replacing ...
Cuba’s President Raul Castro has warned the nation of hard times ahead as the island faces shortages of fuel and energy supplies as well as a cash crunch which will affect imports and investments. The government has decided to ration energy to state businesses in order to avoid domestic blackouts. CCTV America’s Michael Voss has more from Havana.
Basic necessities are rationed in Cuba and are for sale with a food card (libreta) in a peso store. The official currency in Cuba for the Cubans is the peso. A blackboard in the shop shows which street can buy meat etc. that day. All Cubans receive very low wages (average € 15 per month) and old people get less. There are free cultural and educational facilities and medical care. The cost of housing, water , electricity and public transport are heavily subsidized. Especially for the tourists the Cuban government has the convertible peso (CUC) in circulation. A CUC is about 26 times more valuable than a peso. The CUC can be used only in Cuba and abroad nothing worth. You must therefore ensure that you have no CUC`s left when you go back home but remember that you must pay 25 CUC per person ...

Jonny here, right now I'm in Havana, and in this short film I'm going to explain a little about tourism in Cuba. Most cultural holidays to Cuba will start in Havana, a city of magnificent decaying colonial architecture, monuments and parks, museums and galleries, music and bars and large old American cars. But the first thing you'll probably notice wandering around Havana is the near total lack of consumerism. Cuba is still a communist country with no commercial influence from America, and as such there's almost no evidence at all of the large multinationals we're used to in the West; you won't find any Starbucks or McDonalds here. There are no billboards advertising Coca Cola, there are no glass fronted shopping malls. Which is actually really quite refreshing. The whole city gives you ...
Travel video about destination Cuba. Basking in the Caribbean sun, the island of Cuba lies between sun and socialism, rumba and revolution. Havana is the capital. In 1553, the Spanish conquerors designated Havana’s harbour as a collection point for ships loaded with gold and silver from the new Spanish colonies and named the settlement, San Cristobal De La Habana.La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway`s local and nowhere else is the ‘Mojito’ mixed better: three year old white rum, lime juice, soda, sugar, ice and mint. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi house, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia. When the Daiquiri is served, one almost expects Fidel Castro to be sitting at the next table. Pinar Del Rio is a small but...

Cuba is the pearl of the Caribbean Sea. Thanks to the colonial past, Havana - the capital - has plenty of palaces, nice mansions, cathedrals, strong forts, and shady alleys. On the streets the automobiles of the 50’s from United States create a huge contrast with the coaches. Trinidad is full of palaces built by the sugar barons, while Santa Clara is the town of the legendary revolutionary, Che Guevara. Guama shows us an Indian village and a crocodile farm, Varadero offers white, sandy beaches shaded by large palm trees and luxury hotels. In the Tropicana, the band is moving to a heartwarming music. In the famous bars, as the Floridita or the Bodaguita, we can remember Hemingway, and drink from the local rum or the cocktails prepared from it, moreover we can light a good Cuban cigar as wel...

Rationing in Cuba refers to the system of food distribution known in Cuba as the Libreta de Abastecimiento .The system establishes the rations each person is allowed to buy through that system, and the frequency of supplies.Despite rumors of ending, the system still exists. As of 2012, a coupon book taken to a ration shop provided family minimums for rice, sugar, matches, and oil, above the average wage of £15/month. ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- About the author(s): Marcel601 License: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 (CC BY-SA 3.0) Author(s): Marcel601 (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Marcel601&action=edit&redlink=1) ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- This channel is dedicated to make Wikipedia, one of the biggest knowledge databases in t...
What does Cuba, North Korea and Canada have in common? Ontario is falling behind in health care! Too often, people in Ontario must wait extraordinary times for medically necessary appointments and procedures. This costs everybody money and puts people’s health and even their lives at unnecessary and avoidable risk. The cause is rationing and the culprit is government. Only three countries ration essential health care services, Cuba, North Korea and Canada. The solution is easy. Government regulations and laws need to be changed to allow non-government options to expand so the needs of Ontario people can be satisfied. Government can improve this unsustainable and deteriorating situation, but will they? It’s time to Explore New Possibilities. Join us at the Ontario Libertarian Party.

A video snapshot of life in Cuba in1993 as experienced during a two week church related study visit. Twenty delegates and journalists visited Cuban hospitals, health care clinics, a school for the visually impaired, important historical sites and a Cuban farm cooperative during the time of Periodo Especial - a special time of shortages and rationing following the collapse of the Soviet bloc and the subsequent Soviet withdrawal of economic and commercial support for Cuba. The study tour was coordinated by the former United Church of Christ Board for World Ministries. Filmed, written, edited and narrated by Ed Evans.
