Fox Business Network (FBN) is an American cable news and satellite news television channel that began broadcasting on October 15, 2007.^[1] It is owned by the Fox Entertainment Group, part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation. The network discusses business and financial news and, as of July 2011, is available in about 58 million households.^[2]

News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch confirmed the launch at his keynote address at the 2007 McGraw-Hill Media Summit on February 8, 2007. Day-to-day operations are run by Kevin Magee, executive vice president of Fox News; Neil Cavuto manages content and business news coverage. Ray Hennessey directs the FoxBusiness.com website.^[3]

Murdoch had publicly stated that if the purchase of The Wall Street Journal went through and if it were legally possible, he would have rechristened the channel with a name that has "Journal" in it.^[4] However, on July 11, 2007, the parent company, News Corp, announced that the new channel would be called Fox Business Network (FBN).^[5] This name Fox Business Network was chosen over Fox Business Channel due to the pre-existing (though seldom used) legal abbreviation of FBC for Fox Broadcasting Company.^[6]

The network is placed on channel 43 in the New York City market, an important market for financial news. It is paired with Fox News on the dial, which moved to channel 44. CNBC is on channel 15 under the Time Warner lineup in New York.^[7] FBN is on Cablevision on channel 106, only available via subscription to their IO Digital Cable package. According to an article in MultiChannel News magazine, NBC Universal paid up to "several million dollars" in order to ensure that CNBC and Fox Business would be separated on the dial, and in order to retain CNBC's "premium" channel slot.^[8] However, it is important to note that FBN is on Time Warner analog only in New York; in other markets, digital cable is required.^[9] Verizon's FiOS TV, with 515,000 subscribers nationwide, also carries the network on its premier lineup (SD channel 117 and HD channel 617). Dish Network, which began carriage of FBN February 2, 2009, can be found on Channel 206. FBN can also be found on channel 359 on DIRECTV.

On May 12, 2008, Fox Business Network revamped its daytime lineup, which included the debut of two new programs, Countdown to the Closing Bell and Fox Business Bulls & Bears.

On April 20, 2009, Money for Breakfast, The Opening Bell on Fox Business (both hosted by Alexis Glick), The Noon Show with Tom Sullivan and Cheryl Casone, Countdown to the Closing Bell, Fox Business Bulls & Bears and Cavuto all moved to the network's new Studio G set. All six of those shows share the same set in Studio G, which was unveiled on Money for Breakfast the same day.

Fox Business Network HD[link]

Fox Business Network HD is a 720p enhanced high definition simulcast of Fox Business Network. Programming shown on Fox Business Network HD is produced in high-definition, but is cropped to a 4:3 image and pushed to the left of the screen, with the extra room used for additional content, such as statistics and charts, and a wider ticker with more room. The side info is named "The Fox HD Wing". Competitor channel CNBC HD+ also uses the enhanced HD format.

Before the network premiered, few specific facts were made public as to the type of programming approach Fox Business is taking. However, some details emerged as to how it differentiates itself from its main competitor, CNBC.

At a media summit hosted by BusinessWeek magazine, Rupert Murdoch was quoted as saying CNBC is too "negative towards business". They promise to make Fox Business more "business friendly".^[10] In addition, it is expected that Fox Business will not be "poaching" a lot of CNBC's on-air talent in the immediate future, as most key on-air personalities have been locked into a long-term contract. However, that still leaves open the possibility of the network taking some of CNBC's other staff, including editors, producers and other reporters.^[11] News Corporation, the parent corporation of Fox Business and Fox News channels, has made a successful bid for Dow Jones, owner of the Wall Street Journal. However, CNBC has stated on air that it has a contract with Dow Jones until 2012. One potential issue down the road is the fact that CNBC operates several news bureaus under the same roof as the Wall Street Journal.

David Asman, Cheryl Casone, Rebecca Diamond, Dagen McDowell, and Stuart Varney are anchors for Fox Business Network; they also keep their roles at Fox News. In addition, Brenda Buttner and Terry Keenan are also on the roster on FBN.^[12][13]

Other anchors include Peter Barnes, Tom Sullivan, Jenna Lee, Nicole Petallides and Cody Willard.^[14] Reporters include Jeff Flock (a CNN "original"), Shibani Joshi (from News 12 Westchester), and Connell McShane (from Bloomberg Television).^[15] The network also added former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina ^[16] as a contributor to the network.^[17]

Dave Ramsey has a one-hour prime time show, similar in format to his syndicated radio show.^[18] Tom Sullivan broadcast his Tom Sullivan Show on the radio, with plans to syndicate the show nationwide with the assistance of Fox News Radio. Adam Shapiro was added to the Fox Business Network to report from the Washington, DC Bureau. Shapiro was formerly at Cleveland's WEWS-TV and New York City's WNBC-TV. On October 18, 2007, former CNBC anchor Liz Claman joined the Fox Business Network at 2:00 PM EDT. She co-anchors the 2-3pm daypart with David Asman. Her first assignment for FBN was an interview with Warren Buffett.

In April 2008, Brian Sullivan (no relation to Tom) joined the Fox Business Network, coming over from Bloomberg Television. Sullivan, who reunited with his Bloomberg colleague Connell McShane, now anchors the 10am-noon daypart with Dagen McDowell.

In September 2009 Don Imus and FBN reached an agreement to carry his show, Imus in the Morning, on Fox Business. The show began airing on October 5, 2009.^[19] Fox had previously been in negotiations with Imus to bring his show to the network. In November 2007 (when Imus was just returning to radio, and Fox Business was just starting), negotiations fell through and Imus instead signed with rural-oriented cable network RFD-TV.

On December 23, 2009, Alexis Glick left FBN. Announcing that this episode of The Opening Bell would be her last, she said “I know this is not the norm, but I don’t believe in abrupt departures.”^[20] The only reason given by Glick for her departure was that she was leaving to "embark on a new venture,"^[21] but a number of sources have noted that Don Imus' new morning show had a significant effect upon Glick's screen time since he signed with the network.^[22]

On January 4, 2008, the New York Times, and several other media outlets that day, reported that FBN had registered an average of 6,300 viewers, far below Nielsen's 35,000-viewer threshold. The number was so low that neither Nielsen nor FBN were allowed to confirm the number.^[24] The Times and other media outlets noted the network is less than four months old and only in one-third as many households as is CNBC.

In July 2008, Nielsen estimated that FBN averaged 8,000 viewers per daytime hour and 20,000 per prime time hour, compared to 284,000 and 191,000 (respectively) for CNBC. Because FBN's viewership remained low, Nielsen had difficulty estimating viewership, and the estimates are not statistically significant. At the time FBN was available in approximately 40 million homes to CNBC's over 90 million.^[25]

As of fall 2008, FBN was losing to CNBC in the ratings by over 10 to 1.^[26][27]

The latest numbers available, from June 2009, showed FBN with an average of 21,000 viewers between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m., still under the Nielsen threshold, and less than 10% of CNBC's 232,000 for the same time span. At this point, FBN was available in about 49 million U.S. homes.^[28]

Reports of ratings from the first episode of Imus in the Morning reported an average of 177,000 viewers (and a peak of 202,000 in the 7:00 a.m. hour) in the time slot, mostly over the age of 65; this was a more than tenfold increase compared to the network's previous morning show, Money for Breakfast. The program even beat CNBC's Squawk Box in the time slot.^[29]

Criticism[link]

Fox Business has been criticized like CNBC^[30] for the number of infomercials it airs overnight and particularly on weekends.^[31][32] During events regarding the global financial crisis of 2008-2009 however, FBN has forgone informercials and aired overnight coverage from Australian sister network Sky News Business Channel and Sky News from the United Kingdom to provide coverage of the overseas reaction to the events.

International broadcasting[link]

The channel is broadcast to Australia overnight via the Sky News Business Channel.^[33][34] Other countries possible in the future include United Kingdom, although the channel's reports are aired on News Corp's Sky News in the UK,^[35] Canada^[36] and Italy,^[37] although negotiations are still on-going with cable and satellite companies. As of July 2011 the channel is carried on Sky Italia, its first European carriage deal.

On April 20, 2009, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission approved Fox Business Network for distribution in Canada^[38]

Fox Business has put together an industrial index made up of "the largest U.S. companies that make the products you know and use every day." ^[39] This index includes:

Anheuser-Busch and Merrill Lynch were included in the original index, but each was acquired by other companies in 2008. They were replaced by Wells Fargo and HP.^[40] This index is not available to purchase in the form of an Index Fund or ETF. The fund received criticism from some financial bloggers for putting together an index with so many competing brands, i.e., FedEx-UPS, McDonalds-Yum! Brands, WalMart-Target-Costco, Apple-Dell-Microsoft, Coca-Cola-PepsiCo, and so on.^[41]

Business networking is a socioeconomic activity by which groups of like-minded businesspeople recognize, create, or act upon business opportunities. A business network is a type of social network whose reason for existing is business activity. There are several prominent business networking organizations that create models of networking activity that, when followed, allow the business person to build new business relationships and generate business opportunities at the same time. A professional network service is an implementation of information technology in support of business networking. Many businesspeople contend business networking is a more cost-effective method of generating new business than advertising or public relations efforts. This is because business networking is a low-cost activity that involves more personal commitment than company money.

As an example, a business network may agree to meet weekly or monthly with the purpose of exchanging business leads and referrals with fellow members. To complement this activity, members often meet outside this circle, on their own time, and build their own one-to-one relationship with the fellow member.

Business networking can be conducted in a local business community, or on a larger scale via the Internet. Business networking websites have grown over recent years due to the Internet's ability to connect people from all over the world. Internet companies often set up business leads for sale to bigger corporations and companies looking for data sources.

Business networking can have a meaning also in the ICT domain, i.e. the provision of operating support to companies and organizations, and related value chains and value networks.

It refers to an activity coordination with a wider scope and a simpler implementation than pre-organized workflows or web-based impromptu searches for transaction counterparts (workflow is useful to coordinate activities, but it is complicated by the use of s.c. patterns to deviate the flow of work from a pure sequence, in order to compensate its intrinsic linearity; impromptu searches for transaction counterparts on the web are useful as well, but only for non-strategic supplies; both are complicated by a plethora of interfaces needed among different organizations and even between different IT applications within the same organization).

Large firms networks vs. small business networks[link]

Large firms networks spread wider than small business, but the difference between the two types is that to be part of a large firm network you have to achieve a preset level of success, for example fly over to China find out which factory manufactures your favorite product, go to the factory owner, offer to buy a large quantity of the product, he will give you a quote; when he does take that quote and compare to current retail prices, if it's not lower than the retail market by 300 percent to 400 percent, then this factory is part of a business network, meaning they provide the special price only to the network members. This keeps the real value of the product hidden from the public and only available to the large firms they deal with.

Online business networking[link]

Businesses are increasingly using business social networks as a means of growing their circle of business contacts and promoting themselves online. In general these networking tools allow professionals to build up their circle of business partners they trust. By connecting these business partners the networking tools allow individuals to search for certain people within their network. Through introductions, the members of these tools then can get in contact with new prospective business partners. Since businesses are expanding globally, social networks make it easier to keep in touch with other contacts around the world. Specific cross-border e-commerce platforms and business partnering networks now make globalization accessible also for small and medium sized companies.

Face-to-face business networking[link]

Professionals who wish to leverage their presntation skills with the urgency of physically being present attend general and exclusive events. Many professionals tend to prefer face-to-face networking over online based networking because the potential for higher quality relationships are possible. Many individuals also prefer face-to-face because people tend to prefer actually knowing and meeting who they intend to do business with.

Face to face business networking is often facilitated by referral networking clubs.

General business networking[link]

Before online networking, there was and has always been, networking face-to-face. "Schmoozing" or "rubbing elbows" are expressions used among business professionals for introducing and meeting one another, and establishing rapport.

Networked Businesses[link]

With networking developing, many businesses now have this as a core part of their strategy. Those that have developed a strong network of connections suppliers and companies can be seen as Networked Businesses, and will tend to source the business and their suppliers through the network of relationships that they have in place. Networked businesses tend to be open, random, and supportive, whereas those relying on hierarchical, traditional managed approaches are closed, selective, and controlling. These phrases were first used by Thomas Power, chairman of Ecademy, an online business network, in May 2009.

Business networking in the ICT domain[link]

Companies and organizations, and related value chains and value networks need some sort of IT support. Traditionally, it is provided by software applications, software packages, ERPs, and/or workflows; presently, also by different types of web-based innovations.

A truly ICT business networking approach rethinks and rebuilds the operating support from scratch, around two key business features: information contributions, to be provided by the activities involved, whether they are performed by human beings, automated tools or jointly by the two, in a coordinated way; and automated information exchanges, to be provided by the TLC network.

Information contributions and exchanges, in turn, need to be supported by data storage and access security (signature, encryption, authentication, decryption), which both can be provided either as add-ons or as built-in features.

James Beeland Rogers, Jr. (born October 19, 1942) is an American investor and author. He is currently based in Singapore. Rogers is the Chairman of Rogers Holdings and Beeland Interests, Inc. He was the co-founder of the Quantum Fund with George Soros and creator of the Rogers International Commodities Index (RICI).

Rogers is an outspoken proponent of the free market, but he does not consider himself a member of any school of thought. Rogers acknowledged, however, that his views best fit the label of Austrian School of economics.^[2][3]

Early life and education[link]

Rogers was born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Demopolis, Alabama.^[1][4] He started in business at the age of five by selling peanuts and by picking up empty bottles that fans left behind at baseball games. He got his first job on Wall Street, at Dominick & Dominick, after graduating with a bachelor's degree in History from Yale University in 1964. Rogers then acquired a second BA degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Balliol College, Oxford University in 1966.

1970-2002[link]

In 1970, Rogers joined Arnhold and S. Bleichroder. In 1973, Rogers co-founded the Quantum Fund with George Soros. During the following 10 years, the portfolio gained 4200% while the S&P advanced about 47%.^[5] The Quantum Fund was one of the first truly international funds.

In 1980, Rogers decided to "retire", and spent some of his time traveling on a motorcycle around the world. Since then, he has been a guest professor of finance at the Columbia Business School.^[6]

In 1989 and 1990, Rogers was the moderator of WCBS' The Dreyfus Roundtable and FNN's The Profit Motive with Jim Rogers. From 1990 to 1992, he traveled through China again, as well as around the world, on motorcycle, over 100,000 miles (160,000 km) across six continents, which was picked up in the Guinness Book of World Records. He tells of his adventures and worldwide investments in Investment Biker, a bestselling investment book.

In 1998, Rogers founded the Rogers International Commodity Index. In 2007, the index and its three sub-indices were linked to exchange-traded notes under the banner ELEMENTS. The notes track the total return of the indices as an accessible way to invest in the index. Rogers is an outspoken advocate of agriculture investments.

Between January 1, 1999 and January 5, 2002, Rogers did another Guinness World Record journey through 116 countries, covering 245,000 kilometers with his wife, Paige Parker, in a custom-made Mercedes. The trip began in Iceland, which was about to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of Leif Eriksson's first trip to America. On January 5, 2002, they were back in New York City and their home on Riverside Drive. His route around the world can be viewed on his website, jimrogers.com. He wrote Adventure Capitalist following this around-the-world adventure. It is currently his bestselling book.

2002 to present[link]

On his return in 2002, Rogers became a regular guest on Fox News' Cavuto on Business and other financial TV shows.^[7] In 2002, Rogers said that Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan's "reaction to the stock-market bubble has caused two more bubbles to grow: a real-estate bubble and a consumer-debt bubble."^[8] In 2006, Rogers said he was shorting US financials, home builders and Fannie Mae.^[9][10]

In 2005, Rogers wrote Hot Commodities: How Anyone Can Invest Profitably in the World's Best Market. In this book, Rogers quotes a Financial Analysts Journal academic paper co-authored by Yale School of Management professor, Geert Rouwenhorst, entitled Facts and Fantasies about Commodity Futures. Rogers contends this paper shows that commodities investment is one of the best investments over time, which is a concept somewhat at odds with conventional investment thinking.

In December 2007, Rogers sold his mansion in New York City for about 16 million USD and moved to Singapore. Rogers claimed that he moved because now is a ground-breaking time for investment potential in Asian markets. Rogers's first daughter is now being tutored in Mandarin to prepare her for the future. He is quoted as saying: "If you were smart in 1807 you moved to London, if you were smart in 1907 you moved to New York City, and if you are smart in 2007 you move to Asia." In a CNBC interview with Maria Bartiromo broadcast on May 5, 2008, Rogers said that people in China are extremely motivated and driven, and he wants to be in that type of environment, so his daughters are motivated and driven. He also stated that this is how America and Europe used to be. He chose not to move to Chinese cities like Hong Kong or Shanghai due to the high levels of pollution causing potential health problems for his family; hence, he chose Singapore. He has also advocated investing in certain smaller Asian frontier markets such as Sri Lanka and Cambodia, and currently serves as an Advisor to Leopard Capital’s Leopard Sri Lanka Fund.^[11] However, he is not fully bullish on all Asian nations, as he remains skeptical of India's future - "India as we know it will not survive another 30 or 40 years".^[12] In 2008 Rogers endorsed Ron Paul for President of the United States.^[13]

Rogers has two daughters with Paige Parker. Hilton Augusta (nicknamed Happy) was born in 2003, and their second daughter Beeland Anderson in 2008. His latest book, A Gift To My Children, contains lessons in life for his daughters as well as investment advice and was published in 2009.

On November 4, 2010, at Oxford University’s Balliol College, he urged students to scrap career plans for Wall Street or the City, London’s financial district, and to study agriculture and mining instead. “The power is shifting again from the financial centers to the producers of real goods. The place to be is in commodities, raw materials, natural resources."^[14]

In February 2011 Rogers announced that he has started a new index fund which focuses on "the top companies in agriculture, mining, metals and energy sectors as well as those in the alternative energy space including solar, wind and hydro."^[15] The index is called The Rogers Global Resources Equity Index and according to Rogers, only the best and most liquid companies go into the index.
