American farmers look forward to business with Cuba
The thawing of relations between the U.S. and Cuba could be very good news for American exporters, including farmers. While the decades-long U.S. economic embargo on Cuba made doing business with that country very difficult, that could soon change. Wheat farmers in particular see good times ahead. CCTV's Hendrik Sybrandy reported from the U.S. state of Nebraska.

About 50 American businesses came to Havana this week for a trade expo. Reuters reports that many of them were intrigued, but still unclear how to make money in a Communist-ruled country of 11 million people who have little purchasing power. With detente raising hopes that full commercial ties could be restored, U.S. companies are being drawn to Cuba. But it's a market whose attraction defies convention, given that foreign businesses complain about the island's bizarre dual-currency system, rigid labor market and opaque legal guarantees. Some U.S. companies are attracted to the forbidden fruit, as the island has been largely off bounds to U.S. business for more than five decades. Others say they can fill a need, or lament that the United States is ceding a neighboring market to the rest of the world.

A weeklong celebration of commerce is underway in one of the world's last communist countries, with hundreds of international corporations including some big U.S. firms flocking to Havana to try to do business with a government basking in expectations of growth set off by detente with Washington.
The Havana International Fair has long been among the stranger events in the world of international business: a trade fair in a cash-starved country that's embargoed by the world's most powerful nation and views markets with deep suspicion.
For years, Cuban bureaucrats, foreign diplomats and businessmen gamely trooped through the halls of the Pabexpo fairgrounds on the outskirts of Havana, eyeing stalls stocked with products like Spanish canned vegetables and dutifully attending government presentations on opportunities for investments in state-controlled pig farms and nickel mines.
This year's fair has something new: the electric buzz of business hustling to capitalize on what many feel will be a boom set off by the start of the normalization of relations with the U.S.
"This entire process has aroused international interest,'' Commerce Minister Rodrigo Malmierca said Monday as he announced that Cuba saw 4.7 percent growth in the first half of the year, and is expected to close 2015 with 4 percent, up from an anemic 1.3 percent in 2014. "We are convinced that it is possible to have a normal and civilized relationship with the United States.''
A changing country
The loosening of U.S. rules on visiting Cuba, and a rush to see the country that many believe is about to change, has tourist visits up by 18 percent, or 400,000 more people, this year. That's pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into the centrally controlled economy. The expectation that the U.S. will steadily continue to loosen restrictions on trade with Cuba has set off a fever among international investors, who are furiously trying to get footholds in a market that they believe will soar over the long term.
"I have a lot of faith that our government will permit the free flow of tourists to Cuba, and the day that happens this island will become the place that all tourists want to come see,'' said Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure, who announced on Monday that his company had struck a deal directly with the Cuban state telecommunications company ETECSA to provide roaming services to Sprint customers in Cuba. "I want all my Sprint customers, my 60 million customers, to come to Cuba and feel as if they were in any other country in the world.''
This year's fair, known by the Spanish acronym FIHAV, is the biggest in 15 years, with 300 Cuban companies and 600 from 70 other countries, including 20 from the United States. Pepsi, Napa Auto Parts, Gallo Wines and a U.S. tractor company that just got Cuban permission to set up a plant at the new Mariel port and free trade zone have stands among the typical food exporters, among the few American businesses allowed to sell their goods to Cuban under the U.S. embargo.
Long-term opportunities
Most said they saw few short-term opportunities for business in Cuba due mostly to the thicket of prohibitions in the U.S. embargo.
"This is a long-term play,'' said Phil Klein, vice president for the Americas for Gallo, which set up a stand featuring dozens of brands of wine and spirits, an open bar and models in high heels and short skirts. "We're here to learn about the country now that things are opening up.''

Jonny here, right now I'm in Havana, and in this short film I'm going to explain a little about tourism in Cuba.
Most cultural holidays to Cuba will start in Havana, a city of magnificent decaying colonial architecture, monuments and parks, museums and galleries, music and bars and large old American cars.
But the first thing you'll probably notice wandering around Havana is the near total lack

But the first thing you'll probably notice wandering around Havana is the near total lack of consumerism. Cuba is still a communist country with no commercial influence from America, and as such there's almost no evidence at all of the large multinationals we're used to in the West; you won't find any Starbucks or McDonalds here. There are no billboards advertising Coca Cola, there are no glass fronted shopping malls. Which is actually really quite refreshing. The whole city gives you a sense of stepping back in time.
Here in Havana you should enjoy a tour of the cities main sites, an evening at the Bueno Vista Social Club, and trip to one of her many museums. You'll need at least a couple of days, its a very fun place.
In two weeks time Trinidad will celebrate its 500 anniversary. Founded only a few years after Christopher Columbus discovered the America's, the town shot to prominence in the 19th century as one of the world's largest exporters of sugar. With its fine plazas, palaces and churches, and its famous cobbled streets lined by colourful houses, it developed into masterpiece of colonial Caribbean architecture. So well preserved is the town that in 1988 it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status and today forms an important part of most cultural trips to the country.
From Trinidad you might continue east to visit the revolutionary centre of Santiago de Cuba, or head west to enjoy the amazing landscapes around Vinales. Or you might like to do something completely different.
Of course there are plenty of other things to enjoy in Cuba besides the cultural highlights Trinidad and Havana offer. Cuba is blessed with beautiful countryside through which to can go hiking, cycling and horse back riding. Right now I am at a government ranch called La Guabina, in Pinar del Rio province. Each year Wild Frontiers takes the place over to run a horse riding tour of the area and horse riding is primarily what I have come here to do. But if riding is not your thing, from here you can also go on wonderful walks, go fishing or boating on one of the regions many lakes, indulge in some bird watching, or just relax away from the more chaotic life urban Cuba has to offer.
And finally of course there are beaches. As an island over a 1000 kilometres in length, with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, there are hundreds of wonderful beaches just waiting to be enjoyed. And in our experience, Cayo Levisa, where I am now, is one of the best.
Relatively close to Havana, and relatively small in size, Cayo Levisa offers all the usual activities you'd associate with a modern beach resort, like sailing, fishing snorkeling and diving, but is small enough to not have you feeling drowned by mass tourism. As with a number of other similar locations, Cayo Levisa offers a great way to round off your trip to Cuba.
Of course a cultural adventure to Cuba will not be for everyone. With luxury accommodation pretty much non-existent, transport pretty basic, the cuisine though in places surprisingly good, in others rather plain, and a service level that is at best eclectic, those looking for a high end experience will almost certainly be disappointed here.
But if you're the kind of traveller that is interested in seeing a country that hasn't really changed in the last 50 years, a place that has not been overwhelmed by all the trappings of modern consumerism, and are happy to go with the flow in one of the world's last remaining communist countries, then here in Cuba you will find one of the most friendly, authentic, historically interesting and culturally rich places in the whole of Latin America.
My advice is to come soon before it all changes.

Travel video about destination Cuba.
Basking in the Caribbean sun, the island of Cuba lies between sun and socialism, rumba and revolution. Havana is the capital. In 1553, the Spanish conquerors designated Havana’s harbour as a collection point for ships loaded with gold and silver from the new Spanish colonies and named the settlement, San Cristobal De La Habana.La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway`s local and nowhere else is the ‘Mojito’ mixed better: three year old white rum, lime juice, soda, sugar, ice and mint. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi house, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia. When the Daiquiri is served, one almost expects Fidel Castro to be sitting at the next table. Pinar Del Rio is a small but busy town in which the Red Star and portraits of Che Guevara are displayed for all to see. In the old town, colourful houses with beautiful pillared corridors demonstrate the former wealth of the country’s independent tobacco growers. Time means little here. While observing life on the streets, one begins to think in the same relaxed tempo of the leisurely-smoked cigars. A visit to a tobacco factory is a must. Cuba’s cigars are world famous. Together with sugar, tobacco is the country’s most important export. The oldest geological formation in Cuba are the Mogotes, well-weathered limestone peaks which, supported by pillars, once covered a large complex of caves. Over many decades, subterranean rivers flooded the earth below and thus created these gigantic grottos. On seven manmade islands in the centre of the Cienaga De Zapata National Park, is the Indian village of Guama. This swampy nature reserve with its dense mangrove forest vegetation offers an ideal sanctuary for many rare water birds. No Cuban town has changed as little in two hundred years than that of Trinidad. In the 18th century, the city experienced great wealth and recognition due to the cultivation of sugar cane and the luxurious palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city. Rich green tropical forests, tobacco country at the foot of mysterious mountain caves, humid tropical swamps, history, cigars and rum. Cuba is a colourful cocktail

We just got back from an amazing trip to Cuba for a wedding so I wanted to share with you a few things I think you should know if you are thinking about travelling to Cuba or if its been a while since you have been there!
#1) RESEARCH your hotel before you book it!! I cant stress this enough. I didnt the first time I went and we had a really bad experience!!
#2) You need to bring proof of travel insurance when you visit Cuba. We just kept ours with our passports
#3) Be weary of the food and water. There was a couple of uncooked burgers that my friends got and unsanitary handling of meat. As long as you are weary and careful, you will be fine. I was very careful as I did not want to risk being sick on my vacation!! With the water, I always made sure I could crack the bottle open to make sure it was bottled water and if we ran out, we just bought more at the store as it is not that expensive.
#4) Bring an insulated mug!! At all inclusive resorts, the drinks they give you are in very small cups. So to avoid going back and forth to the bar all day, bring a big mug!!
Here is the link to the resort we stayed at:
http://www.memoriesresorts.com/en/resort/varadero.aspx
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments at all! Would love to hear from you guys.

Havana City is the capital city of Cuba, and one of the fourteen provinces of the Republic of Cuba.
Weather in Havana, Cuba
=======================
Cuba has a tropical climate, with warm, humid weather all year long, though cold temperatures have occured in the mountains before. Being surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba has warm water year round, with winter water temperatures at 75F, spring and fall temperatures at 78F and summer temperatures at 82F.
See in Havana, Cuba
=================
Museum of the Revolution and the Capitol Building.
Visit a live cigar factory. One offering tours is at the intersection of Peñalver and San Carlos (just 1 mile southwest of Old Havana La Habana Vieja), tickets can/should be bought in advance (10 CUC per person as of July 2014). English tours are available. Please note that there is no photography allowed. It is the place where you can also be sure to get the correct cigars in the shop - more expensive than 'street offers' - but the quality of these "street offers" is definitely questionable, . Note that the Partagas cigar factory just behind the Capitol Building has closed permanently since late 2011.
Havana Club Rum Factory. Go on a guided tour of Havana Club, one of Cuba's most famous rums. Most of the exhibits are subtitled in English and are fairly self-explanatory.
Walk along the Prado street in the evening. Great public space - unfortunately not illuminated at night. The Prado hums with street life, cafes and charm.
Walk along El Malecón. A favorite stroll for tourists and locals, a walk along the Malecon runs along the main streets of Havana and provides stunning views of the Bay.
Enjoy the glory of La Habana Vieja (The Old Town), some of it faded and crumbling - but there are many beautifully restored buildings as a result of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.
Plaza de la Revolución. Huge square dominated by a statue and monument of Jose Marti and the iconic image of Che Guevara adorning the Ministry of the Interior. Arrive either early or late, as it is often swamped by tourists and gets very hot during the day.
John Lennon Park in Vedado. Features the only statue of a western musician in Havana. Notable for the regularly stolen (and replaced) eyeglasses.
The US Special Interests building in Vedado, just off the Malecon. In the absence of a United States embassy in Cuba, this heavily fortified and guarded building is where Cuban citizens go to apply for US Visas. It was notable for displaying news which is unfiltered and not censored by the Cuban government on electronic billboards situated behind the windows of one of the floors, but these were switched off in 2009. It is also the focus for regularly staged protests.
Hotel Habana Libre in Vedado. The hotel housed Castro's soldiers for several days after they took Havana. It has an excellent selection of photos in the lobby along with one of the only 24 hour fast food restaurants in the city.
Enjoy extraordinary 360-degree views of the city using the large Camara Oscura in the old town.
The Catedral de San Cristobal in old Havana. Said to be the only example of a baroque construction that possesses asymmetrical features, one of the towers is wider than the other.
Plaza de Armas. Spacious and elegant, the square is surrounded by baroque constructions that give it a authentic colonial milieu.
Castillo de la Real Fuerza, Plaza des Armas. Castillo de La Real Fuerza is the oldest bastioned fortress in the New World and has now reopened as a Cuba’s premier maritime museum.
Do in Havana, Cuba
===============
Walk along the Malecón, the sea wall that runs along the Havana coastline. On weekends this is where the locals come to party, so bring a bottle and join in.
Latin American New Cinema Festival, [6] is a popular event held every December, screening international films and drawing around 500,000 people.
Tropicana Show — A cabaret show that costs 90CUC.
Take a tour in an old car — For around 20-30CUC an hour for up to four people, be driven around Havana in style. Choose a car you like near the Hotel Inglaterra or outside the Museum of the Revolution.
Go to the eastern beaches (Playas del Este) — There's a bus leaving from Hotel Inglaterra every 30 minutes. Price is 5 CUC for a roundtrip. The ride takes about 30 minutes.
Walk around Havana Vieja in the early mornings, or take a very long walking tour with "Havana Frans", a Dutch jazz photographer who lives in Havana.

Pakistan seems to have donned the role of a guinea pig-cum-promotion agent for China's arsenal experiments, as it is all set to buy at least 36 advanced fighter jets from China in a landmark deal for about $1.4 billion (Rs 6,500 crore), reported the Financial Times.

Ludwig Palacio is a well-known member of the Garifuna community of Belize. He was born in Punta Gorda 46 years ago the second child of Rose and Augustus Palacio. He was a mischievous, fun-loving, inquisitive child who excelled at everything he did. After graduating from Belmopan Comprehensive School in 1983, he earned a scholarship to study veterinary medicine in Cuba. After completing his studies in 1989 he returned to Punta Gorda where he has been a practicing vet for the past 20 years.
Undoubtedly, Ludwig is one of the most talented persons I know, said Angela Palacio. He is a published author whose writings have been well received. He has been writing prose, poetry, plays and skits since he was a teenager. A few of his published works include Sugarosi, A Collection of Prose and Poetry and Short Stories, and the poem Mi Tierra Es Linda. He has also written the screenplay for the movie Agada, a story of a strong, resourceful and assertive Garifuna woman. No doubt it will soon be coming to a theatre near you.
In embracing his self taught artistic side, he is able to coax beautiful art from everyday objects that surround him. It’s no big deal for him to fashion a table, a chair or a bench from bamboo, wood or any object that fascinates him. His repertoire also includes abstract art which he uses to express love, unity and environmental awareness.
He is also a believer that technology can be inexpensively adopted to fill the need at hand. To that end, he has invented and produced wood-burning stoves, solar food dehydrators and biogas digesters to name a few. One of his stoves is currently in the Garifuna temple in Barranco and is used to prepare the food for the traditional Garifuna ceremonies. It is made of a rice hull and cement mixture and can be used to cook, bake and grill. His other invention is a biogas digester. He has captured the gases that are a byproduct of the decomposition of pig manure and uses it as fuel that can be used for cooking.
In addition to his creative and veterinary side, he is a consultant with responsibilities of strategic planning, business planning, social impact assessments, etc. This work required some travel and has taken him to places far and wide, including Thailand, the Caribbean, Guyana, Central America and the US. Despite the fact that he crams so much into a day, he still makes time to lend a helping hand to those individuals or businesses in the community that need him.
Ludwig would not and could not be the man he is without the family that supports him in all his undertakings. Curlette, his wife, and their children Yserri, Ludwig Jr. Tanigi- Rose, and Vijay Ygemerri provide the stable family life that nourishes his soul and inspires him to face the challenges of the outside world. They are the center of his universe and because of them he is able to do as he does.
Together, he and Curlette own and manage several apartments and are currently working on a farm house in which they intend to live sometime later this year. I’m sure at the farm there will always be a few of Ludwig’s “projects” in progress.
He was designated by his cousin Angela Palacio as the first Personality of the Month of the Belize and Garifuna Community website.

Every night besides the town hall of Athens, next to Omonia square, where the narrow streets of the popular entertainment hub district Psirris begin, black girls from Nigeria gather to work.
Dressed provocatively, they approach people who pass by and offer their services. "Come on baby I know you want me", you hear one say playfully with a big smile on her face. Or is it a mask she wears?
The beautiful young Nigerians, between 20 and 25 years old, are victims of trafficking, forced to prostitute themselves for little money.
"Everyone knows that. The young Athenians who gather in Psirris to have fun; the policemen who casually drive through the area to keep an eye on things; the mayor of Athens; most of all the 'customers'," says resident Miltiadis Papathomopoulos, as he stares at the girls, and the people walking by.
Nigerian girls appeared on the steers of Athens during the Olympic Games. They never left. Nobody knew where they came from, and no one particularly wanted to. Until Dina Daskalopoulou, a journalist working on social issues, thought that this could not go on.
"I did it for two reasons," she told IPS, talking of her decision to start investigating the issue. "First, because everybody, citizens and officials, had an attitude that 'these things happen, nobody can stop them'. And then because anyone I talked with insisted that no one can really go out there and tell this story."
Her story, put together after six months work, circulated Mar. 24 in Eleftherotipia, a big national daily. She found that the girls come from Edo region in Nigeria, a place which regularly provides people to global slave labour networks.
The girls are sold for a couple of thousand euros by their families, or they are lured by traffickers with promise of a better life. There are an estimated 50,000 girls from there being sexually exploited around Europe.
Most transit through Italy. They are charged up to 40,000 euros for the trip, and they are then forced into prostitution to pay their debt. Several of the women have said that traffickers, most often Nigerians, use tribal voodoo superstition to persuade the girls that if they escape or speak up, they and their families will suffer.

There are certain places on this planet that seem almost like fiction.
Unreachable destinations that you expect to only see in story books and documentaries.
The Amazon Rainforest in northern Brazil was one of those places for me.
So when I had the opportunity to come to Brazil, I wasn't going to miss the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream.
My experience began in the gateway city of Manaus, where the journey into the jungle proved to be a task unto itself...
I took a taxi from the airport down to the city's main harbor.
It was here that had my first glimpse of the incredible size and scope of the Amazon river on ground level.
From here I crossed the river on a small shuttle boat, passing the point where the Rio Negro converges with the Amazon which forms a really cool color divide in the water.

Pakistani officials confirmed the deal and said they might buy "larger numbers" of the J-10 fighter aircraft in the near future.
As part of the initial agreement, China will supply two squadrons of the fighter jets.
"This agreement should not simply be seen in the narrow context of Pakistan's relations with China," said Abdul Qayyum, a retired Pakistani general told the paper.
"There is a wider dimension. By sharing its advanced technology with Pakistan, China is also saying to the world that its defence capability is growing rapidly."
Though China has earlier supplied Pakistan with fighter jets, this is the first time that it is supplying advanced jets to Pakistan in such large numbers.
According to defence experts, it is not just a deal, but also Pakistan's stamp of approval on China's advancing military power and will help in increasing China's sales of the fighter jet.
"Countries like Iran and possibly some of the Middle Eastern countries would be keen to deal with China if they can find technology which is comparable to the west," said a western official in Islamabad told the paper.
"Pakistan will work as the laboratory to try out Chinese aircraft. If they work well with the Pakistani air force, others will follow," he added.
Over the years, Pakistan has spent billions buying fighter jets from leading military powers.
In the 1970s, it bought Mirage fighter jets from France, and in the 80s, it turned to the US for F-16s. The Pakistani air force has at least 45 F-16s, and will receive 18 more of the upgraded version of F-16 and 12 of the older version from the US soon to be used in the war against the Taliban.
China and Pakistan have also jointly built an advanced fighter jet, JF-17, commonly known as 'Thunder'. Pakistan also plans to buy at least 250 of the Thunder jets over the next few years.
While China has already come up with its indigenous aircraft, Pakistan will reportedly release its version of 'Thunder' in a few weeks.
