Bulgari (Italian pronunciation: [ˈbulɡari]) is an Italian jeweler and luxury goods retailer which has been owned by the French firm LVMH since October 2011. The trademark is usually written "BVLGARI" in the classical Latin alphabet (where V = English U), and is derived from the surname of the company's Greek founder, Sotirio Voulgaris (Greek: Σωτήριος Βούλγαρης, Greek pronunciation: [soˈtirjos ˈvulɣaris], Italian: Sotirio Bulgari, 1857–1932). Although the company made a name for itself with jewelry, today it is a recognized luxury brand that markets several product lines including watches, handbags, fragrances, accessories, and hotels.

Sotirios Voulgaris began his career as a jeweller in his home village Paramythia^[2] (Epirus, Ottoman Empire), where his first store can still be seen. In 1877, he left for Corfu and then Naples. In 1881 he finally moved to Rome, where in 1884 he founded his company and opened his second shop in via Sistina.

The current flagship store in via dei Condotti was opened in 1905 by Bulgari with the help of his two sons, Costantino (1889–1973) and Giorgio (1890–1966). The store quickly became a place where the world's rich and famous came for the unique, high quality jewelry designs combining Greek and Roman art.

During the Second World War, Costantino Bulgari and his wife, Laura Bulgari, hid three Jewish women in their own Roman home. They were strangers to them; the Bulgaris opened their doors out of outrage for the raid of the Roman ghetto in October 1943. For their generous action, on 31 December 2003, they were awarded the title of Righteous among the Nations at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.^[3]

On 6 March 2011 French luxury group LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA announced that it was acquiring Bulgari SpA in an all-share deal for €4.3 billion ($6.01 billion), higher than LVMH had offered for any other company.^[4] Under the deal, the Bulgari family sold their 50.4 per cent controlling stake in exchange for 3 per cent of LVMH, thereby becoming the second-biggest family shareholder behind the Arnaults in LVMH.^[5] The takeover doubled the size of LVMH’s watches and jewelry unit, which at the time of the acquisition included Tag Heuer timepieces and De Beers diamond necklaces. The acquisition concluded on 4 October 2011 as Bulgari was delisted from the Borsa Italiana.

International expansion[link]

Bulgari opened its first international locations in New York City, Paris, Geneva and Monte Carlo in the 1970s. For many years the company maintained a showroom in New York's The Pierre Hotel. Today Bulgari has more than 290 stores worldwide.^[6]

In 1984, Sotirio's grandsons Paolo and Nicola Bulgari were named Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the company and nephew Francesco Trapani was named CEO. Trapani's goal to diversify the company was started in the early 1990s with the release of the Bulgari perfume line. Under his tenure the company has established itself as a luxury goods brand recognized throughout the world.

In 1995, the company was listed on the Borsa Italiana. The company has seen 150% revenue growth between 1997 and 2003. Currently outside investors hold about 45% of the company's stock.

In the beginning of 2001, Marriott International formed a joint venture with Bulgari Spa to launch a new luxury hotel brand, Bulgari Hotels & Resorts. Luxury Group, the Luxury Division of Marriott operates Bulgari Hotels & Resorts as well as the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. Bulgari opened its first hotel in Milan in 2004, and a second in Bali in 2006. In 2011, Bulgari Bali has been chosen by the readers of Smart Travel Asia magazine as number-2 of top places to stay in Asia.^[7] Bulgari is the supplier of luxury goods used in guest suites and public areas aboard the ships of the Italian cruise company Silversea.

Bulgari jewelry design is distinctive and often imitated (and counterfeited). In the 1970s, many of the more expensive Bulgari pieces (such as necklaces, bracelets and earrings) were characterized by instantly recognizable, bold, architectural designs combining large and weighty gold links with interlocking steel. Bulgari is also famous for colored stones, especially sapphires mixed in unique formats. Genuine Bulgari watches have a unique serial number that is registered with the company.

Bulgari has started developing its own calibers and parts, including highly complicated mechanisms and basic calibers. Kirsten Caroline Dunst (born April 30, 1982) is an American-German actress, singer and model. She made her film debut in Oedipus Wrecks, a short film directed by Woody Allen for the anthology New York Stories (1989). At the age of 12, Dunst gained widespread recognition playing the role of vampire Claudia in Interview with the Vampire (1994), a performance for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. The same year she appeared in Little Women, to further acclaim.

Dunst achieved international fame as a result of her portrayal of Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-Man trilogy (2002–07). Dunst was born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, to Inez (née Rupprecht) and Klaus Dunst.^[1] She has one younger brother.^[2] Her father worked as a medical services executive, and her mother was an artist and one-time gallery owner.^[3] Dunst's father is German, originally from Hamburg, and Dunst's mother, who was born in New Jersey, is of German and Swedish descent^[4][5] (Dunst obtained German citizenship in 2011 and now holds dual citizenship with the United States and Germany).^[6][7]

Until the age of six, Dunst lived in Brick Township, New Jersey, where she attended Ranney School.^[8] In 1991, she moved with her mother and younger brother to Los Angeles, California, where she attended Laurel Hall Day School. In 1995, her mother filed for divorce.^[3] The following year Dunst began attending Notre Dame, a private Catholic high school in Los Angeles.

After graduating from Notre Dame, Dunst continued the acting career that she had begun at the age of eight.^[2] As a teenager, she found it difficult to deal with her rising fame, and for a period she blamed her mother for pushing her into acting as a child. However, she later expressed that her mother "always had the best intentions".^[9] When asked if she had any regrets about the way she spent her childhood, Dunst said: "Well, it's not a natural way to grow up, but it's the way I grew up and I wouldn't change it. I have my stuff to work out ... I don't think anybody can sit around and say: 'My life is more screwed up than yours.' Everybody has their issues."^[7]

Early work[link]

Dunst began her career when she was three years old as a child fashion model in television commercials.^[3][10] She was signed with Ford Models and Elite Model Management.^[3] At the age of eight years old she made her film debut in a minor role in Woody Allen's Oedipus Wrecks, a short film that was released as one-third of the anthology New York Stories (1989).^[3] Soon after, she landed a small part in The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), as Tom Hanks's daughter.^[3] In 1993, Dunst played Hedril in "Dark Page", the seventh episode of the seventh season of Star Trek: The Next Generation.^[11]

Critical success[link]

The breakthrough role in Dunst's career came in Interview with the Vampire, a 1994 film based on Anne Rice's novel, in which she played the child vampire Claudia, a surrogate daughter to Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt's characters in the film.^[12] The film received ambivalent reviews,^[13] but many film critics complimented Dunst's performance. Roger Ebert commented that Dunst's creation of the child vampire Claudia was one of the "creepier" aspects of the film, and mentioned her ability to convey the impression of great age inside apparent youth.^[14] Todd McCarthy in Variety noted that Dunst was "just right" for the family.^[15] The film featured a scene in which Dunst received her first kiss from Brad Pitt, who was 18 years her senior.^[16] In an interview with Interview magazine, she revealed, while questioned about her kissing scene with Pitt, that kissing him had made her feel uncomfortable: "I thought it was gross, that Brad had cooties. I mean, I was 10."^[17] Her performance earned her the MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, the Saturn Award for Best Young Actress, and her first Golden Globe Award nomination.^[2][18][19]

Later in 1994, Dunst appeared in the adaptation of the drama Little Women opposite Winona Ryder and Claire Danes.^[3] The film received favorable reviews.^[20] Critic Janet Maslin of The New York Times wrote that the film was the greatest adaptation of the novel and remarked on Dunst's performance, "The perfect contrast to take-charge Jo comes from Kirsten Dunst's scene-stealing Amy, whose vanity and twinkling mischief make so much more sense coming from an 11-year-old vixen than they did from grown-up Joan Bennett in 1933. Ms. Dunst, also scarily effective as the baby bloodsucker of Interview With the Vampire, is a little vamp with a big future."^[21]

In 1995, she appeared in the fantasy movie Jumanji, loosely based on Chris Van Allsburg's 1981 book of the same name.^[22] The story is about a supernatural and ominous board game which makes animals and other jungle hazards appear upon each roll of the dice.^[22] She was part of an ensemble cast that included Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, and David Alan Grier. The movie grossed $262 million worldwide.^[23] That year, and again in 2002, she was named one of People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People.^[3] In 1996, Dunst had a recurring role in the third season of NBC's medical drama ER. She portrayed a child prostitute, Charlie Chiemingo, taken under the guidance of Dr. Doug Ross, played by George Clooney.^[2] In 1997, she was the voice of Young Anastasia in the animated musical film Anastasia.^[24] Also in 1997, Dunst appeared in the political satire Wag the Dog, opposite Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman.^[25] The following year she was the voice of the title character, Kiki, a 13-year-old apprentice witch who leaves her home village to spend a year on her own, in the anime movie Kiki's Delivery Service (1998).^[26]

Dunst was offered the role of Angela in the 1999 drama film American Beauty, but turned it down because she did not want to appear in the film's suggestive sexual scenes or kiss co-star Kevin Spacey.^[17] She later explained: "When I read it, I was 15 and I don't think I was mature enough to understand the script's material."^[17] That same year, she appeared in the comedy Dick, alongside Michelle Williams. The film is a parody retelling the events of the Watergate scandal which lead to the resignation of U.S. president Richard Nixon.^[27]

In Sofia Coppola's independent film The Virgin Suicides (1999), Dunst played the role of troubled adolescent Lux Lisbon.^[28] The film was screened as a special presentation at the 43rd San Francisco International Film Festival in 2000.^[29] The movie received generally favorable reviews,^[30] and San Francisco Chronicle critic Peter Stack noted in his review that Dunst "beautifully balances innocence and wantonness."^[31]

In 2000, she played Torrance Shipman, the captain of a cheerleading squad in Bring It On.^[32] The film generated mostly critical reviews,^[33] with Charles Taylor of Salon.com writing that the film had failed to provide Dunst with as good a role as she had either in Dick or in The Virgin Suicides.^[34] However, Jessica Winter of The Village Voice complimented Dunst, stating that her performance was "as sprightly and knowingly daft as her turn in Dick. She provides the only major element of Bring It On that plays as tweaking parody rather than slick, strident, body-slam churlishness."^[35] The movie grossed $90 million worldwide.^[23]

The following year, Dunst had the lead in the teen comedy Get Over It (2001).^[36] She later explained that one of the reasons for accepting the role was that it gave her the opportunity to sing.^[37] Also in 2001, she depicted the late American actress Marion Davies in The Cat's Meow, directed by Peter Bogdanovich. Derek Elley of Variety described the film as "playful and sporty," saying that this was Dunst's best performance to date: "Believable as both a spoiled ingenue and a lover to two very different men, Dunst endows a potentially lightweight character with considerable depth and sympathy."^[38] In the Esquire review, Tom Carson called her performance "terrific."^[39] For her work, she won the Best Actress Silver Ombú category award at the 2002 Mar del Plata Film Festival.^[40]

In the 2002 superhero film Spider-Man, the most successful film of her career to date, Dunst played Mary Jane Watson, the best friend and love interest of the title character, played by Tobey Maguire. The film was directed by Sam Raimi. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly remarked on Dunst's ability to "lend even the smallest line a tickle of flirtatious music."^[41] In the Los Angeles Times review, critic Kenneth Turan noted that Dunst and Maguire made a real connection on screen, concluding that their relationship involved audiences to an extent rarely seen in films.^[42] Spider-Man was a commercial and critical success.^[43] The movie grossed $114 million during its opening weekend in North America and went on to earn $822 million worldwide.^[23]

Following the success of Spider-Man, Dunst appeared in the independent drama Levity (2003), where she had a supporting role.^[44] That same year she starred in Mona Lisa Smile (2003). She was part of an ensemble cast that included Julia Roberts, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Julia Stiles. The film generated mostly negative reviews,^[45] with Manohla Dargis of the Los Angeles Times describing it as "smug and reductive."^[46] She next appeared in the supporting role of Mary Svevo in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), alongside Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, and Tom Wilkinson.^[47] The latter film received very positive reviews,^[48] with Entertainment Weekly describing Dunst's subplot as "nifty and clever."^[49] The movie grossed $72 million worldwide.^[23]

The success of the first Spider-Man film led Dunst to reprise the role in the 2004 sequel, Spider-Man 2.^[50] The movie was well received by critics^[51] and a financial success, setting a new opening weekend box office record for North America.^[52] With revenue of $783 million worldwide, it was the second highest grossing film in 2004.^[23] Also in 2004, she portrayed a rising tennis player in the Wimbledon Championships opposite Paul Bettany, who played a fading former tennis star in the romantic comedy Wimbledon. Reception for the movie was mixed,^[53] but many critics enjoyed Dunst's performance.^[54][55] Claudia Puig of USA Today reported that the chemistry between Dunst and Bettany was potent, with Dunst doing a fine job as a sassy and self-assured player.^[56]

In 2005, she appeared as flight attendant Claire Colburn alongside Orlando Bloom, in Elizabethtown, a movie written and directed by Cameron Crowe. The film premiered at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival. Dunst revealed that working with Crowe was enjoyable, but more demanding than she had expected.^[7] The movie garnered mixed reviews,^[57] with the Chicago Tribune rating it one out of four stars and describing Dunst's portrayal of a flight attendant as "cloying."^[58] It was a box office disappointment.^[59]

Dunst's next film role was the title character in the 2006 biographical film Marie Antoinette. Adapted from Antonia Fraser's book Marie Antoinette: The Journey, the film was Dunst's second with director Sofia Coppola.^[60][61] The movie was screened at a special presentation at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival,^[62] and was reviewed favourably.^[63] International revenues were $45 million out of $60 million overall.^[64]

In 2007 she again played Mary Jane Watson, in Spider-Man 3.^[65] In contrast to the previous two films' positive reviews,^[43][51] Spider-Man 3 was met with a mixed reception by critics.^[66] Nonetheless, with a total worldwide gross of $891 million, it stands as the most commercially successful film in the series and Dunst's highest grossing film to the end of 2008.^[23] Having initially signed on for three Spider-Man films, she revealed that she would do a fourth, but only if Raimi and Maguire also returned.^[67] In January 2010 it was announced that the Spider-Man franchise would be restarted, thus dropping Dunst, Maguire, and Raimi from the film series.^[68][69]

In 2008, Dunst starred alongside Simon Pegg in How to Lose Friends and Alienate People,^[70] an adaptation of the memoir of the same name by former Vanity Fair contributing editor Toby Young.^[71] After she signed on to the film, she revealed that she had joined the project because Pegg was scheduled to appear in it.^[72]

Since 2010, Dunst's work has included directing the short film Bastard which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2010,^[73] and was later featured at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.^[74] Her next role was in a leading role opposite Ryan Gosling in the romantic drama All Good Things (2010) in which she portrays a woman from a run-down neighborhood who goes missing.^[75] The feature received reasonable reviews,^[76] and earned $640 thousand worldwide.^[23] Dunst stars in Lars von Trier's science-fiction film Melancholia as a depressed woman at the end of the world. The film, which also stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland and Charlotte Rampling premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Dunst won the Best Actress Award award for her performance.^[77][78]

Dunst has signed to appear in Sweet Relief as peace activist Marla Ruzicka, a U.S. relief worker killed by a suicide bomb in Baghdad.^[79][80] She has expressed interest in playing the role of Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry in Michel Gondry's upcoming biographical film about the band.^[81][82] Dunst is due to appear in Juan Diego Solanas' science fiction-romance film Upside Down co-starring Jim Sturgess.^[83] Dunst has also recently filmed the short film The Second Bakery Attack with Brian Geraghty.^[84]

Reports have also stated that she will join Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley, and Garrett Hedlund in the upcoming feature, On the Road.^[85] She will make a cameo appearance in the upcoming short feature Fight for Your Right Revisited. It premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.^[86] As of September 2011, Dunst finished filming the independent comedy, Bachelorette, produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.^[87][88] Reports have stated that she will join Clive Owen and Orlando Bloom in the international thriller titled 'Cities'. Dunst made her singing debut in the 2001 film Get Over It, performing two songs written by Marc Shaiman.^[91] She also lent her voice to the end credits of The Cat's Meow, singing Henry Creamer and Turner Layton's jazz standard "After You've Gone."^[67][92] In Spider-Man 3, she sings two songs as part of her role as Mary Jane Watson, one during a Broadway performance, and one as a singing waitress in a jazz club.^[67][93] Dunst revealed that she recorded the songs earlier and later lip-synced to it when filming began.^[67] She also appeared in the music videos for Savage Garden's "I Knew I Loved You,"^[94] and R.E.M.'s "We All Go Back to Where We Belong"^[95] and she sang two tracks—"This Old Machine" and "Summer Day"—on Jason Schwartzman's 2007 solo album Nighttiming.^[96] In an interview with The Advertiser, Dunst explained that she has no plans to follow the steps of other actors who release albums, saying: "Definitely not. No way. It worked when Barbra Streisand was doing it, but now it's a little cheesy, I think. It works better when singers are in movies."^[9]

Dunst starred as the magical princess Majokko in the Takashi Murakami and McG directed short Akihabara Majokko Princess singing a cover of "Turning Japanese". This was shown at the "Pop Life" exhibition in London's Tate Modern museum. It shows Dunst prancing around Akihabara, a crowded shopping district in Tokyo.^[97][98] The exhibition was held from October 1, 2009 to January 17, 2010 in London.

Personal life[link]

Dunst has reportedly been involved in short-term relationships with actor Jake Gyllenhaal, and musician Johnny Borrell of Razorlight.^{[99][100][101]}

Dunst was treated for depression in early 2008 at the Cirque Lodge treatment center in Utah.^{[102][99][102]} She explained that she had been feeling low in the six months before her admission.^[102] In late March she checked out of the treatment center and began filming All Good Things. In May she went public with this information in order to highlight the struggle faced by so many other successful women and to dispel false rumors that had been very painful for her friends and family.^[103][104] She has also gone public detailing her "sedate lifestyle" and the fact that she has a single apartment in New York with one bedroom.^[105] She is Lutheran.^[106]

Dunst supported Democratic candidate John Kerry in the 2004 U.S. presidential election.^[112] Four years later, she supported Democrat Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election.^[10][113] Dunst revealed that she supported Obama "from the beginning" of the presidential campaign.^[114] In support of this, she directed and narrated a documentary entitled Why Tuesday, explaining the United States tradition of voting on Tuesdays.^[114][115] Dunst explained that Tuesday is "not a holiday, and [the United States is] one of the lowest democratic countries in voter turnout."^[114] She felt it important to "influence people in a positive way" to vote on November 4.^[115]

Her charity work includes participation with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, in which she helped design and promote a necklace, for which all proceeds from sales went to the Glaser foundation.^[116] She also has helped with breast cancer awareness; in September 2008 she participated in the Stand Up to Cancer telethon, to help raise funds to accelerate cancer research.^[117][118] On December 5, 2009, she participated in the Teletón in Mexico, to help raise funds to treat cancer and children rehabilitation.^[119]

Nipsey's first recorded mixtape, was Slauson Boy Volume 1, and soon became the name of his own record label.^[2] In 2008 Nipsey released two mixtapes, Bullets Ain't Got No Name, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2,^[3] before signing with Epic Records.^[4][5] In 2009, his debut single, "Hussle In The House", was released.

In 2009 he released a third mixtape, Bullets Ain't Got No Name, Vol. 3. He appeared with Drake on the song "Killer"^[6] and on the song "Upside Down" on Snoop Dogg's album Malice n Wonderland.^[7] A first studio album, South Central State of Mind, was expected in the summer of 2009 but was never released; it has been postponed indefinitely. The Marathon was released instead on December 21, 2010.^{[citation needed]}

In 2010 he appeared on the song "We Are the World 25 for Haiti".^[8] He was chosen as one of XXL Magazine's "Annual Freshman Top Ten", a selection of ten up-and-coming artists^[9] as "Most Determined"^[10] And continues to have success with the release of his new single "Feelin Myself" featuring Lloyd. The first single off The Marathon mixtape is "Keys to the City" (Produced By E.N.G. & Djay Cas).^[11] He made a guest appearance on fellow rapper YG's 2012 single "Bitches Ain't", also featuring Young Money member Tyga.^[12] It debuted on the Hot 100 at #100 and on the Heatseekers Songs chart at #11.^[13]

Stanislav Todorov Trifonov (Bulgarian: Станислав Тодоров Трифонов) (born 18 October 1966), known as Slavi Trifonov (Bulgarian: Слави Трифонов), is a Bulgarian showman, actor, singer and viola player born in Pleven (Bulgarian: Плевен). Trifonov's main music genre is chalga, but he has experimented with other genres such as pop-rock and punk as a part of Ku-ku Band (Bulgarian: Ку-Ку Бенд).

He is the host of Slavi's Show, bTV's late-night talk show. It is styled after the standard U.S. late-night talk shows. Nevertheless, many topics and elements in the show's setup are aimed at providing a specific Bulgarian flavor.

Main script-writers of the Slavi show are Ivailo Vulchev, Ivo Siromahov, Toshko Iordanov, Dragomir Petrov, Kalinka Todorova.

Trifonov is a professionally trained violist. In the early 1990s, together with several of his classmates at NATFIZ, he created Ku-Ku. In 1996, as a cast member of Kanaleto, he took an active role in the protests that eventually led to the fall of the socialist government. He is both loved and hated in his home country. His current show is one of the most watched, although he is often criticized for his controversial humor. The concept of "Slavi's Show" has changed significantly over the years. Originally, it was based on the classic formula - half of the show he performed a type of "one-man show" (though not exactly - Trifonov was often accompanied by other actors and his Ku-Ku Band) and in the other half Trifonov introduced a guest. At one point, the show became an arena for political debates before some important elections. Later on, Trifonov and his team changed the concept and made the show more music-focused. He held a contest called "I sing in KuKu Band" in order to choose a singer for the band. Every phase of the contest was aired. The contestants had to deal with difficult singing tasks. Finally, because of the growing popularity of the contestants, Trifonov decided to continue the contest, turning it into a show. He chose the five most popular contestants (Lora, Liubena, Nadia, Svetlio, Vlado) and let them compete for the grand prize - the winner would have the chance to record an album and to have his or her own show. Meanwhile Trifonov participated in the competition Eurovision - Bulgaria. There he triggered a major scandal by stating that the winner was known in advance and the competition was not fair.

Trifonov has had a long running feud with Ivan Kostov, which started due to him thinking that Ivan Kostov, who at the time was Bulgaria's prime minister was the one who took Hushove off the air.

In 2005, Trifonov steered his show in a different direction. This time, the famous comedians Krasi Radkov, Liubomir Neikov and Viktor Kalev riveted the attention of thousаnds of viewers. Later, Nikolay Stanoev joined the team of actors after being picked by Trifonov himself after another contest, but left the show. In 2006, Liubomir Neikov left Slavi Show and joined Komitzite and on his place Slavi Trifonov hired a new comedian actress - Maia Bezhanska, who later also left the show.

In 2006 Trifonov started a new reality show "Dance with me" and in 2008 he recorded the song "My Love" featured on the Bulgarian edition of Ruslana's international album Wild Energy. Also, Slavi did a show called 'Smart and beautiful' (Umna i krasiva). The winner was an Ukrainian girl.

Anish Kapoor CBE RA Padma Bhushan (born 12 March 1954) is an Indian-born British sculptor. Born in Mumbai,^[1][2] Kapoor has lived and worked in London since the early 1970s when he moved to study art, first at the Hornsey College of Art and later at the Chelsea School of Art and Design.

He represented Britain in the XLIV Venice Biennale in 1990, when he was awarded the Premio Duemila Prize. In 1991 he received the Turner Prize and in 2002 received the Unilever Commission for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern. Notable public sculptures include Cloud Gate, Millennium Park, Chicago, Sky Mirror exhibited at the Rockefeller Center, New York in 2006 and Kensington Gardens in 2010, Temenos, at Middlehaven, Middlesbrough, 'Leviathan'^[3] at the Grand Palais in 2011 and ArcelorMittal Orbit^[4] commissioned as a permanent artwork for the Olympic Park and due for completion in 2012.

Anish Kapoor was elected a Royal Academician in 1999^[5] and in 2003 he was made a Commander of the British Empire. In 2011 he was made a Commander in the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and was awarded the Japanese Praemium Imperiale.

Biography[link]

Anish Kapoor was born in Bombay, India to a Jewish mother whose family immigrated from Baghdad when she was a few months old. “She had an Indian-Jewish upbringing. Her father, his grandfather, was the cantor in the synagogue in Pune. At the time, the Jewish community in Mumbai was quite large, mostly consisting of Baghdadi Jews.”^[6] His father, from a Hindu Punjabi family, was a hydrographer in the Indian Navy.^[7]

Kapoor spent his early years first in Mumbai, and then in Dehra Dun at the Doon School. In 1971-1973, he traveled to Israel with one of his two brothers, initially living on a kibbutz. He began to study electrical engineering,^[6][8] but had trouble with mathematics and quit after six months.^[9] In Israel, he decided to become an artist.^[10] In 1973, he left for Britain to attend Hornsey College of Art and Chelsea School of Art and Design.^[7] There he found a role model in Paul Neagu, an artist who provided a meaning to what he was doing.^[11] Kapoor went on to teach at Wolverhampton Polytechnic in 1979 and in 1982 was Artist in Residence at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. He has lived and worked in London since the early 1970s.^[5]

Artistic career[link]

Anish Kapoor became known in the 1980s for his geometric or biomorphic sculptures made using simple materials such as granite, limestone, marble, pigment and plaster.^[12] These early sculptures are frequently simple, curved forms, usually monochromatic and brightly coloured, using powder pigment to define and permeate the form. "While making the pigment pieces, it occurred to me that they all form themselves out of each other. So I decided to give them a generic title, A Thousand Names, implying infinity, a thousand being a symbolic number. The powder works sat on the floor or projected from the wall. The powder on the floor defines the surface of the floor and the objects appear to be partially submerged, like icebergs. That seems to fit inside the idea of something being partially there." ^[13] Such use of pigment characterised his first high profile exhibit as part of the New Sculpture exhibition at the Hayward Gallery London in 1978.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, he was acclaimed for his explorations of matter and non-matter, specifically evoking the void in both free-standing sculptural works and ambitious installations. Many of his sculptures seem to recede into the distance, disappear into the ground or distort the space around them. In 1987, he began working in stone.^[14] His later stone works are made of solid, quarried stone, many of which have carved apertures and cavities, often alluding to, and playing with dualities (earth-sky, matter-spirit, lightness-darkness, visible-invisible, conscious-unconscious, male-female and body-mind). "In the end, I’m talking about myself. And thinking about making nothing, which I see as a void. But then that’s something, even though it really is nothing." ^[15]

Since 1995, he has worked with the highly reflective surface of polished stainless steel. These works are mirror-like, reflecting or distorting the viewer and surroundings. Over the course of the following decade Kapoor's sculptures ventured into more ambitious manipulations of form and space. He produced a number of large works, including Taratantara^[16] (1999), a 35 metre tall piece installed in the Baltic Flour Mills in Gateshead, England before renovation began there and Marsyas (2002), a large work of steel and PVC that reached end to end of the 3,400-square-foot (320 m²) Turbine Hall of Tate Modern. A stone arch by Kapoor is permanently placed at the shore of a lake in Lødingen in northern Norway. In 2000, one of Kapoor's works, Parabolic Waters, consisting of rapidly rotating coloured water, was shown outside the Millennium Dome in London.

The use of red wax is also part of his repertoire, evocative of flesh, blood and transfiguration. In 2007, he showed Svayambh^[17] (which translated from Sanskrit means 'self-generated'), a 1.5 metre block of red wax that moved on rails through the Nantes Musée des Beaux-Arts as part of the Biennale estuaire; this piece was shown again in a major show at the Haus Der Kunst in Munich and in 2009 at the Royal Academy in London. Some his work blurs the boundaries between architecture and art. In 2008, Kapoor created Memory^[18] in Berlin and New York for the Guggenheim Foundation, his first piece in Cor-Ten, which is formulated to produce a protective coating of rust. Weighing 24 tons and made up of 156 parts, it calls to mind Richard Serra’s huge rusty steel works, which also invite viewers into perceptually confounding interiors.^[19]

In 2009, Kapoor became the first Guest Artistic Director of Brighton Festival. Kapoor installed four sculptures during the festival; Sky Mirror at Brighton Pavilion gardens, C-Curve^[20] at The Chattri, Blood Relations (a collaboration with author Salman Rushdie) and 1000 Names, both at Fabrica. He also created a large site-specific work titled 'The Dismemberment of Jeanne d’Arc'^[21] and a performance-based installation: ‘Imagined Monochrome’. The public response was so overwhelming that police had to re-divert traffic around C Curve at the Chattri and exercise crowd control.

In September 2009, Kapoor was the first living artist to have a solo exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. As well as surveying his career to date it also included new works. On display were 'Non-Object' mirror works, cement sculptures previously unseen, and 'Shooting into the Corner'^[22] a cannon that fires pellets of wax into the corner of the gallery. Previously shown at MAK, Vienna in January 2009, it is a work with dramatic presence and associations and also continues Kapoor's interest in the self made object, as the wax builds up on the walls and floor of the gallery the work slowly oozes out its form.

In spring 2011, Kapoor's work, "Leviathan",^[3] was the annual "Monumenta" installation for the Grand Palais in Paris.^[23][24] Kapoor described the work as: "A single object, a single form, a single colour... My ambition is to create a space with in a space that responds to the height and luminosity of the Nave at the Grand Palais. Visitors will be invited to walk inside the work, to immerse themselves in colour, and it will, I hope, be a contemplative and poetic experience".

In 2011, Kapoor exhibited 'Dirty Corner'^[25] at the Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan. Fully occupying the site's 'cathedral' space, the work consists of a huge steel volume, 60 metres long and 8 metres high, that visitors enter. Inside, they gradually lose their perception of space, as it gets progressively darker and darker until there is no light, forcing people to use their other senses to guide them through the space. The entrance of the tunnel is goblet-shaped, featuring an interior and exterior surface that is circular, making minimal contact with the ground. Over the course of the exhibition, the work will be progressively covered by some 160 cubic metres of earth by a large mechanical device, forming a sharp mountain of dirt in which the tunnel appears to be running through.

Public commissions[link]

Turning the World Upside Down, Israel Museum, 2010

Kapoor's earliest public commissions include the Cast Iron Mountain at the Tachikawa Art Project in Japan, as well as an untitled work in Toronto. In 2001, Sky Mirror, a large mirror piece that reflects the sky and surroundings, was commissioned for a site outside the Nottingham Playhouse. Since 2006, Cloud Gate, a 110-ton stainless steel sculpture with a mirror finish, has been permanently installed in Millennium Park in Chicago. Viewers are able to walk beneath the sculpture and look up into an omphalos or navel above them.

In the autumn of 2006, a second 10 metre Sky Mirror, was installed at Rockefeller Center, New York. This work was later exhibited in Kensington Gardens in 2010 as part of the show 'Turning the World Upside Down' along with three other major mirror works.

ArcelorMittal Orbit , London Olympic Park , 2012

In 2009, Kapoor created the permanent, site-specific work 'Earth Cinema'^[26] for Pollino National Park, the largest national park in Italy, as part of the project ArtePollino – Another South.^[27][28] Kapoor's work, Cinema di Terra (Earth Cinema), is a 45m long, 3m wide and 7m deep cut into the landscape made from concrete and earth.^[27] People can enter from both sides and walk along it viewing the earth void within.^[28][29] Cinema di Terra officially opened to public in September 2009.^[27]

Kapoor was also commissioned to produce five pieces of public art by Tees Valley Regeneration (TVR), collectively known as the "Tees Valley Giants".^[30] The first of these sculptures, Tememos, was unveiled to the public in June 2010. Temenos stands 50 metres high and is 110 metres in length. A steel wire mesh pulled taught between two enormous steel hoops, it remains an ethereal and an uncertain form despite its colossal scale.

In 2010, Turning the World Upside Down, Jerusalem was commissioned and installed at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The sculpture is described as a "16-foot tall polished-steel hourglass" and it "reflects and reverses the Jerusalem sky and the museum's landscape, a likely reference to the city's duality of celestial and earthly, holy and profane."^[31]

Also in June, Kapoor's "Orbit"^[4] was announced as the winning proposal for an artwork for the 2012 Olympic Games. The Greater London Authority selected Kapoor's sculpture from a shortlist of five artists as the permanent artwork for the Olympic Park. At 115 metres tall, Orbit will be the tallest sculpture in the U.K.

Soon to be completed is a granite monument to commemorate the British victims of 9/11 in New York’s Hanover Square.^[32]

Throughout his career, Kapoor has worked extensively with architects and engineers. Kapoor says this body of work is neither pure sculpture nor pure architecture. Notable architectural projects include:

• Ark Nova,^[34] an inflatable concert Hall that will travel around the earthquake struck regions of Japan. In collaboration with architect Arata Isozaki
• Orbit,^[4] the permanent artwork for the Olympic Park, in collaboration with engineer Cecil Balmond.

A collaboration with author Salman Rushdie, Kapoor for the first time conceived a mesmeric sculpture consisting of two bronze boxes conjoined with red wax and inscribed around the outside with the first two paragraphs of Rushdie's text; "Blood Relations"^[43] or an "Interrogation of the Arabian Nights" in 2006.^[44]

Kapoor initially began exhibiting as part of New British Sculpture art scene, along with fellow British sculptors Tony Cragg and Richard Deacon.^[12] His first solo exhibition took place at Patrice Alexandra, Paris, in 1980.^[46] In 1992 Kapoor contributed to documenta IX with the Building Decent into Limbo.^[47] He achieved widespread recognition when he represented Britain at the 1990 Venice Biennale.^[48] Solo exhibitions of his work have since been held in the Tate and Hayward Gallery in London, Kunsthalle Basel in Switzerland, Reina Sofia in Madrid, the National Gallery in Ottawa, Musee des arts contemporains (Grand-Hornu) in Belgium, the CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art in Bordeaux, the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Brazil, and the Guggenheim in Bilbao, New York and Berlin. In 2008, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston exhibited Kapoor's first U.S. mid-career survey.^[49] That same year, Kapoor’s Islamic Mirror (2008), a circular concave mirror, was installed in a 13th-century Arab palace now being used as by the Convent of Santa Clara in Murcia.^[50] Kapoor was the first living British artist to take over the Royal Academy, London, in 2009;^[51] the show attracted 275,000 visitors, making it the most successful exhibition ever by a living artist in London.^[52] In 2010, Kapoor retrospective exhibitions were held at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi and Mumbai’s Mehboob Studio, the first showcase of his work in the country of his birth.^[53][54] In 2011 Kapoor has had a solo touring exhibition with the Arts Council, part of their "Flashback " series of shows. In May he exhibited "Leviathan" at the Grand Palais, and two con-current shows in Milan at the Rotunda di via Basana and Fabbric de Vappore.

Kapoor represented Britain at the Venice Biennale, 1990, where he was awarded the Premio Duemila. The following year, he won the prestigious Turner Prize. Kapoor was elected Royal Academician in 1999 and has been awarded Honorary Fellowships by the London Institute and Leeds University (1997), University of Wolverhampton (1999) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (2001).^[5] In October 2011 Kapoor was presented with the Praemium Imperiale in Tokyo City.^[55]

In 2012, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour.^{[56][57][58][59]}

Kapoor made a $27 million profit in 2008, taking the fortune he has made from his art to an estimated $62.7 million.^[60] His record auction price is 1.94 million pounds, set in July 2008.
