4. The Division of Powers- Montesquieu
Foundations of Modern Social Thought (SOCY 151) We shift from seventeenth century England to eighteenth century France and from the methodological individualism of Hobbes and Locke to the methodological collectivism of Montesquieu and Rousseau. Working from a perspective that there is a general will apart and above the sum of the opinions of individuals, Montesquieu's work focuses primarily on the law and on manners of governing rather than the question of who governs. Like Locke, Montesquieu argues that the powers of government should be separated. Montesquieu's plan of separation between executive, legislative, and judicial powers is what the United States Constitution follows. Montesquieu asserts that the climate and environment affect men as individuals as well as society. Although many of his specific ideas seem quite silly now, we must give credit to Montesquieu for being perhaps the first social and political thinker to seriously consider the environment. 00:00 - Chapter 1.

Leafing, Cutting & Running: Montesquieu Winery Earns Their Keep in Argentina
Montesquieu Winery team works hard on the first Malbec to come in for the Uco Valley from the gorgeous Val de Flores Vineyard. Our team was visiting Bodegas Rolland to experience first hand the team and the land where the beautiful Mariflor wines are made. Montesquieu Winery is the exclusive importer to the US of the Rolland Collection Mariflor wines which is owned by Michel and Dany Rolland. We were not disappointed as the beauty of the Uco Valley surrounded us and the warmth of the people inspired us. Tasting Mariflor Malbec with Thierry Haberer: Montesquieu Winery On How to Determine Ripeness
Our Montesquieu Winery team walking the Mariflor Vineyard with Tierry Haberer, winemaker for Michel Rolland at Mariflor, as well as Le Bon Pasteur in St. Emilion and more. We discovered there are differences row to row from exposure, and also whether or not the vines have rootstock or not.

Montesquieu Winery Shares a Glimpse Into Champagne Harvest and Production
Montesquieu Winery shares a look into the timeless region of Champagne and the production process. In Champagne there are mainly huge Champagne producers with very high volume production. There are an estimated 15000 growers in Champagne, a great majority selling to the big Champagne houses—very few, such as Jerome Dehours actually focus on making their own, distinctive limited production Champagne. Montesquieu Winery is the exclusive importer of Jerome Dehours into the United States. Montesquieu Wines are limited production, focusing on mainly boutique, family owned vineyards like those of Dehours. Dehours is famous, and greatly respected, for low dosage style yielding fresh and pure qualities without added sugars masking the varietal characteristics. 90% of the champagne consumed today is a blend of different vintages, yielding a non-vintage champagne. Excessive reliance on blending can mask the potential the best wines are capable of attaining. Vintage Champagne, with the quality and balance of acidity and fruit can cellar extremely well, developing beautifully for many years.

2011 Harvest Begins! Montesquieu Winery Helps Bring in the First 2011 Val de Flores Malbec
Montesquieu Winery team, including winemaker Helene Mingot, CEO Fonda Hopkins, and Montesquieu wine brokers assist Michel Rolland's team from Bodega Rolland in the Uco Valley. Helene Mingot, who makes Montesquieu Wines from the Howell Mountain Napa Valley facility, shares with the group what she tasted and the conditions for harvest. The sky was clear, no humidity, sun shining, perfect temperature: an ideal day for harvest! The very first of the region's Malbec came in from the pristine Val de Flores vineyard. Helene enthused that the Malbec tasted perfectly ripe, crisp and refreshing in the mouth, with soft, fine tannins. The fruit component was out front, followed by spice, freshness, sugar and integrated tannins. She was really impressed with the balance of the acid and fruit, foreseeing an excellent wine in the future! Our team had tasted the Malbec the day before with Rolland winemaker Thierry Haberer (Mariflor, Le Bon Pasteur, Stellenbosch, Campo Eliseo). It was decided to harvest the following morning, which is what you are seeing the preparations for on this video. The development of Malbec in the region was interesting this year, as the weather had recently cooled allowing the Malbec some extra hang time, a very good thing for development of phenolic compounds which are essential for the tannins to come in. Montesquieu Winery in addition to crafting fine domestic wines, imports exclusive selections from all over the world. Montesquieu Winery is the exclusive ...

Clark is a doctoral candidate in the Boston College Department of Political Science completing her dissertation on French Enlightenment political philosophy. Montesquieu Winery with Federico Benegas Lynch in Libertad Vineyards, Mendoza
A small team from Montesquieu Winery including CEO Fonda Hopkins, winemaker Helene Mingot and Montesquieu wine brokers, visit Bodegas Benegas, hosted by world-renowned winemaker Federico Benegas-Lynch. Federico personally hosted the tour of the Libertad Vineyards in the Upper Mendoza River Bank region, established in 1897 by Federico's great-grandfather who is credited with being the father of the Mendoza wine region. Federico describes to Fonda Hopkins how the grapes are very close to harvest, and one of the ways to tell, in addition to the taste and feel of the grapes in your mouth, is to observe the seeds. A rich dark brown means it is time to harvest as the tannins from the mature seeds will release during fermentation more readily. This is ideal, resulting in a wine that is well-balanced in the key components of acid, sugar and tannins. Benegas is an inspiration-passionate and hands-on with his craft, spending as much time on the land as in the winery. These 85 year old vines-and some older-benefit from loving care and the perfect climate, making biodynamic principles a natural choice.
