V2 Records (or V2 Music) is a record label that is owned by Universal Music Group as of October 2007. The label was founded in 1996 by Richard Branson, five years after he sold Virgin Records to EMI.

Ultimately, the label was owned 95% by Morgan Stanley and 5% by Branson because Morgan Stanley was the chief financier of the company. Over the years V2 acquired Gee Street Records, Junior Boy's Own, Blue Dog Records, and Big Cat Records. The label also distributed many labels, such as Wichita, Luaka Bop, City Slang, and Modular.

V2 now operates in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Sweden, United Kingdom, and United States. It was distributed in the US by BMG; however it left for WEA shortly after the formation of Sony BMG. Its headquarters were located at 14 East 4th Street in Manhattan, the former US home of Island Records, which was in the same building as the former Greenwich Village branch of Tower Records.

In April 2005, Cooperative Music was set up by the V2 Music Group as a transnational marketing and distribution operation which licenses independent labels, as opposed to individual artist companies which is the standard industry practice, for release in Europe, Australia and Japan. This in-house licensing division has an exclusive international marketing team with representation in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Australia and Japan.

In 2006 Branson sold V2 North America to Sheridan Square Entertainment for $15 million. They then merged V2 North America with its label Artemis Records. The new label was effectively divested from the Virgin Group.

In May 2006, much of V2's catalogue, including multiplatinum artists Moby and The White Stripes, was added to eMusic, making the label one of the most high-profile featured on the online music site, which mostly sells DRM-free independent music at a cost considerably lower than many of its competitors.

On 12 January 2007, V2 North America announced that it was undergoing restructuring to focus on its back catalogue and digital distribution. As a result, their employees were let go and their roster of artists left as free agents.

V2 Benelux was founded by Richard Branson in 1997 as part of the V2 International group with affiliates in USA, UK, Scandinavia, Germany, France, Italy and Benelux. In February 2007 the current directors of V2 Benelux, Chris Boog and Tom Willinck, rounded off a successful management buy out together with their current distributor, Bertus Distribution.

In August 2007, V2 Music Group was sold for £7 million to Universal Music Group. Subsequently in October 2007, UMG partnered the US operations of its independent distribution arm Fontana Distribution, known as Fontana International, with London-based Cooperative Music of V2 Music. The intent was to enhance expansion through international agreements, and so independent labels from Europe under Cooperative Music would gain access to the independent American marketplace through Fontana International's diverse connections in independent marketing, promotion and distribution support. Cooperative Music is now an established label group headed up by Vincent Clery-Melin, with both UK and International marketing teams. Cooperative Music has had significant success with various acts such as Fleet Foxes, Phoenix and The Black Keys

After Sheridan Square Entertainment's liquidation, V2 North America was sold to IndieBlu Music Holdings. IndieBlu was acquired by E1 Entertainment in 2010; now, V2 North America is presently owned and distributed by E1, and is no longer affiliated with its former parent label.

Heather Nova, (born Heather Allison Frith, July 6, 1967) is a Bermudian singer-songwriter and poet. She has released eight full-length albums and has found lasting success in Germany where two of her albums ''South'' and ''Storm'' have made their way into the Top-5 of German official album chart.

Biography

Heather Nova was born in Bermuda. Her mother is a Canadian from Nova Scotia, and her father is a native Bermudian. Her uncle, Michael K. Frith, worked for The Jim Henson Company, and was a creator of Miss Piggy, and of the television shows Fraggle Rock and Between the Lions. His son, Heather's first-cousin, is folk singer Johnathan Frith.

Nova spent most of her childhood with her family, including one sister, television reporter Susannah, and one brother, reggae singer Mishka, on a 40 ft (12 m) boat (named "Moon") built by her father, where the Friths spent most of 1970s and part of the 1980s, sailing throughout the Atlantic and Caribbean waters and coasts. Since her idyllic childhood, Heather has played over 600 concerts, sold over 2 million albums and has a career of 20 years in the music industry.

Nova started playing guitar and violin at an early age, writing her first song when she was 12. Her family relocated to New England where she attended the Putney School in Putney, Vermont. Following her graduation in 1983, Nova enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where she majored in film in 1989. She also sat in on poetry classes and wrote music to go with her student films. Later, she would forego film study to focus on creating music.

Career

After graduating from RISD, Nova briefly relocated to New York City (where she unsuccessfully tried to interest some major labels in a demo), before moving to London, England, a place she called home for twelve years (she already had British citizenship due to her Bermudian origins). In 1990, she released her first recording, ''Heather Frith'', an EP; she had not yet changed her name. The name change came a year or so later, in an effort to create a name with more buzz.

The new name debuted in 1993 with her second EP ''Spirit in You'' and her first full album, the critically acclaimed ''Glow Stars'', after being discovered by producer Felix Tod and introduced to Big Cat label manager Steven Abbott. The success of the album led her to record and release her first live album ''Blow'' the same year, which she supported by a tour of Europe. In 1994, she released ''Oyster'', for which she toured for almost two years. Another live album, ''Live from the Milky Way'', was released in 1995. ''Siren'', the follow-up to ''Oyster'' because of the hit single "London Rain", was released in 1998, after which she joined Sarah McLachlan and others on the North American Lilith Fair, a music festival with only female performers.

After the release of ''Siren'' and a world tour to promote the record, Nova took a break while various television show and film soundtracks licensed some of her songs and her record company (Sony Records/The WORK Group) released various singles from the album, which received only moderate play on America's MTV2, Europe's MTV and Canada's MuchMusic and on mainstream radio, although she was popular on college radio. Also during this time, she recorded a version of the often covered traditional song "Gloomy Sunday", for the German WWII feature film drama ''Ein Lied von Liebe und Tod'' (released under the International title ''Gloomy Sunday''). She released yet another live album, ''Wonderlust'', in 2000.

Over the years, Nova has written and recorded over 120 songs. With the release of ''South'' (2001), she returned to the international spotlight with an appearance on the soundtrack of the John Cusack movie ''Serendipity''. She also appeared on the soundtrack to the Sean Penn film, ''I am Sam'' and sung on ''The Crow''. A collaboration with Swedish indiepop band Eskobar, for a song called "Someone New", led to its music video being played primarily on America's MTV. ''Storm'', Nova's fifth studio album, recorded with Mercury Rev as her backing band, was released in late 2003 on her own Saltwater label, went top 5 in Germany, followed by a tour during which Nova became eight months pregnant. She quickly followed the birth of her son with her next record ''Redbird'', released in 2005, again Top 10 in Germany.

In December 2005, Nova released ''Together As One'', an EP supporting the Bermuda Sloop Foundation, which operates the Bermuda sloop Spirit of Bermuda. The EP was only available in Bermuda shops and from the fan-run websites, HeatherNova.Net and HeatherNova.De.

In 2002, she self-published ''The Sorrowjoy'', a 72-page book of her poetry and drawings. An album of the same name was released in March 2006, which featured Nova reading the poems from her book set to ambient music. The album has only been available for purchase at concerts beginning with the Intimate Evening tour, from the fan-run websites, HeatherNova.Net and HeatherNova.De, and from the official website, www.heathernova.com.

She also collaborated with the German trance artist ATB on tracks like "Love Will Find You", "Feel You Like A River" and the international hit "Renegade".

In 2008, Nova released an album called ''The Jasmine Flower'', a solar powered acoustic album recorded in Bermuda, before touring as an acoustic tour. In the fall of 2010 she embarked on another European tour promoting her ''The Jasmine Flower'' album. On this tour, she played four unreleased songs ("Save A Little Piece Of Tomorrow", "Everything Changes", "Burning To Love", and "Turn The Compass Round") that are included on her current album, ''300 Days At Sea''. This full-band album was released on May 27, 2011, using Pledge Music as the forum.

Personal life

Nova lives in Bermuda with her husband, music producer Felix Tod, and their son Sebastian (born in 2004).

Heather Nova is popular in New Zealand with "Oyster" peaking at #23 and "Siren" peaking at #18 in the RIANZ Top 40. The single "Walk This World" peaked at #19 and still gets occasional radio play.

Josh Ritter (born October 21, 1976) is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist and author who performs and records with The Royal City Band. Ritter is known for his distinctive Americana style and narrative lyrics. In 2006 he was named one of the "100 Greatest Living Songwriters" by ''Paste'' magazine.

Early life

Ritter was born and raised in Moscow, Idaho, a college town in the north central part of the state. As a teenager, after hearing Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country” on his parents' copy of ''Nashville Skyline'', he attempted to write songs on a lute that his father had built, before abandoning the lute and buying his first guitar at K-Mart.

Ritter graduated from Moscow High School in 1995 and attended Oberlin College in Ohio to study neuroscience, but later changed his major to the self-created "American History Through Narrative Folk Music". At the age of 21 Josh recorded his first album ''Josh Ritter'' at a recording studio on campus. After graduating, Josh moved to Scotland to attend the School of Scottish Folk Studies for six months. Josh then moved back to Idaho for a few months, before moving to Providence, Rhode Island, then Somerville, Massachusetts, where he worked temporary jobs and played at open mic nights. During this time, Ritter sold copies of his album and was spotted by Glen Hansard and his band The Frames, who invited him to return with them to Ireland. As an early sign of his success to come, Ritter found on the trip to Ireland that his album sold particularly well at open mics there. With the money from merchandise sales, Ritter was eventually able to quit his day job and devote himself to music full-time.

Career

A year and a half after recording ''Josh Ritter'', Ritter recorded his second album ''Golden Age of Radio'' for $1000 and self-published it. The album was recorded in three different studios: Soundgun in Philadelphia, Electric Cave in New Hampshire, and a friend's basement studio. While promoting ''Golden Age of Radio'', he met Jim Olsen, head of independent record label Signature Sounds, who offered to remaster and re-release the album after hearing Ritter play. The song "Me & Jiggs" was subsequently released as a single in Ireland, where Ritter was quickly becoming a word-of-mouth success, first opening for The Frames, then headlining his own shows. Ritter's third record, ''Hello Starling'', produced by former Frames guitarist Dave Odlum, debuted at #2 on the Irish charts.

In 2003, Ritter shared top billing with the French Kicks at Sepomana, the annual music festival produced by WRMC 91.1 FM. Ritter and Ron Sexsmith headlined the Friday night singer-songwriter event at the Hotel Viking at the 2004 Newport Folk Festival. He also appeared at Oxegen 2005, and has headlined with artists such as Joan Baez, who later released her own version of Ritter's song "Wings" on her album ''Dark Chords on a Big Guitar''. He was signed by a British label, V2 Records, in 2005 and ''Hello Starling'' was subsequently re-released. He began performing and touring in a crossover duo with the classical violinist Hilary Hahn in 2005.

In 2006, Ritter released his fourth album ''The Animal Years''. 2006 also saw the release of Ritter's first full-length live album and DVD ''In The Dark - Live At Vicar Street'' which was recorded over two nights in May 2006. Ritter released his fifth album, ''The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter'', in 2007. Both ''The Animal Years'' and ''Historical Conquests'' received warm critical reception with Stephen King calling ''The Animal Years'' the best album of 2006 in his column for ''Entertainment Weekly''. In support of ''Historical Conquests'', Ritter appeared as a musical guest on such high profile television shows as ''Late Show with David Letterman'' in America and ''Later... with Jools Holland'' in Britain.

Ritter re-issued his second and third, ''Golden Age of Radio'' and ''Hello Starling'' on April 7, 2009 and January 17, 2010 respectively. Each re-issued albums were packaged as two-disc deluxe editions. The deluxe editions contain both the original studio album as well as solo acoustic versions of all the original tracks, live and remixed bonus songs, and never-before-seen photos and artwork. The deluxe editions also feature liner notes written by Ritter fans, including Dennis Lehane and Cameron Crowe.

In Autumn 2009 Ritter toured with Love Canon String Band, where he reinterpreted his songs with a band composed of banjo, double bass, mandolin and guitar. This tour included three nights in Whelans Dublin, where he performed his albums ''Golden Age of Radio'', ''Hello Starling'', and ''The Animal Years'' in full. In 2009, Ritter also provided the soundtrack for the documentary film, ''Typeface'', by Kartemquin Films.

Ritter's sixth album, ''So Runs the World Away'', was released April 23, 2010 in Ireland and May 4, 2010 worldwide. The vinyl version of the album had an earlier release on April 17, 2010 as a part of Record Store Day celebrations. The vinyl record came packaged with a CD version of the album as well. To promote the album, Ritter made the song, "Change of Time" from ''So Runs the World Away'', available for free download from his website on February 8, 2010. The song also appeared in the March 23, 2010 episode of the television series ''Parenthood''. In support of the new album Ritter toured with his newly named The Royal City Band - starting with six dates in Ireland - including a sell out performance at the newly opened 2100 capacity Grand Canal Theatre in Dublin and continuing with an extensive tour of the United States. ''So Runs the World Away'' largely garnered positive reviews. "Change of Time" was featured on the ''Parenthood'' soundtrack in August 2010, and quickly became a fan favorite. The song was also featured in the trailer for the 2011 Natalie Portman film, ''The Other Woman''.

On February 15, 2011 Ritter reissued ''The Animal Years'' on vinyl and as a two-disc deluxe edition on CD. The deluxe edition contains both the original studio album as well as a solo acoustic version of the album. The bonus disc includes four b-side recordings, two videos, new artwork, and liner notes by author Tom Ricks.

During his early 2011 tour, Josh Ritter released an EP album of previously unreleased material from the ''So Runs the World Away'' recording sessions, titled ''To the Yet Unknowing World''. Ritter began streaming the EP for free on his website as well as made it available for digital purchase on February 8, 2011. ''To the Yet Unknowing World'' hit Apple's iTunes and record stores February 15, 2011. In February 2011, Ritter and his band continued their extensive tour in support of So Runs The World Away touring America and Europe. During his European tour in April 2011, Ritter released his third live album, ''Live at The Iveagh Gardens''. The limited edition two CD and one DVD set is a live recording of Ritter's performance of 21 songs at the Dublin venue on 18 July 2010.

Personal life

Josh Ritter married Dawn Landes, a fellow musician, in Branson, Missouri on May 9, 2009. However, in a February 2011 interview with the ''Boston Herald'', when asked about Dawn Landes, Ritter said "we’ve actually decided to split, which is hard, but is going to be better in the end".

On November 22, 2009, Ritter played at a Benefit Concert at Moscow Junior High School in Moscow, Idaho for Jim LaFortune, an Earth Science teacher at the school struggling with a brain tumor. LaFortune was one of Ritter's teachers. Ritter attended the school from the 7th through the 9th grade.

Apart from music, Ritter also has interests in writing. Ritter has claimed many different writers as influences on both his songwriting and fiction work. Some of his favorite authors are Flannery O'Connor, Philip Roth, and Dennis Lehane (who wrote the intro for the Deluxe Edition of ''Hello Starling''). The title of Ritter's sixth album, ''So Runs the World Away'', comes from a line in the third act of Shakespeare's ''Hamlet''. Ritter's own novel, ''Bright's Passage'', was published by Dial Press on June 28, 2011. Ritter has said of the novel, "Besides my songs, ''Bright’s Passage'' is the first [written] work I’ve wanted anyone to see". Ritter has said that "It’s about a kind of sweet normal guy from West Virginia. He goes to the first World War and he comes back and he has an angel. And it’s about him and this angel escaping this wildfire for five days. It’s sort of this short little comedy".

The Royal City Band

In 2010, Ritter's band members - some of whom had been performing with him from the early 2000s - were given the name "The Royal City Band" (a reference to the song "Thin Blue Flame" from ''The Animal Years'').
