PorchChase, Fort Worth Texas, 6/12/09: Supercell from Parker County Approaches Johnson County
Tornado watches issued for North Central Texas from 3 -11 pm CDT. A stalled frontal boundry to the north and an approaching dry line from the west put us in the triple point. Scattered supercells quickly developed. One cell popped off the dry line to our northwest, in Jack County. It took its sweet time traveling SE, dropping a few tornadoes, hail (orange, tennis ball and baseball sized), drenching rain, and had wind gusts up to 80 miles an hour along its path. The storm passed to the west of Tarrant County (where I was, sheltering with my twin sis at our local hospital) and went through Johnson County (where we live). No tornadoes (thank God) or massive hail, but winds reached 70 plus miles an hour as it went through Burleson. The worst part passed to the west of Burleson. LOTS of vivid lightning in this storm. This was taken looking south/southwest, along I-35 West. Oh - and that last bolt? It hit the hospital, setting off all the smoke alarms. Two fire trucks and ambulances arrived shortly thereafter. =] TxStoryTeller moves pretty fast on her crutches, let me tell you! LOL Video (c) 2009, Karla Dorman

"Grub Springs"- Emily Schaad, 1st Place in Old Time Fiddle at Laurel Bloomery Convention
Emily Schaad performs "Grub Springs" to win First Place in the "Old Time Fiddle" category at the 83rd Johnson County Old Time Fiddlers Convention on 22 August 2008. One additional fiddle number is also performed to help close out the evening's activities. This convention started in 1925 at the old high school building at Church and College Streets in Mountain City. It has been held somewhere in Johnson County, Tennessee every year since. It may be the longest running "old time" fiddlers convention in the southern Appalachians. For the last 17 years it has been held at the "Old Mill Music Park" owned by the Warden family in Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee.

Corrupt Cops Jails Man for IPhone Picture in JC TN
Scott Conover was continuously intimidated, harassed, and arrested by the Johnson County TN Sheriff's Department. These cops are as corrupt as they come. Along the list of false charges were "Unlawful Photography." Starling McCloud, the Asshole deputy who arrested Conover after Conover took a picture of him during a traffic-stop, apparently he thought that it was against the law to take a picture of a asshole. Fiddlin' Carson Peters and the Rockhouse String Band at Laurel Bloomery Old Time Fiddlers Convention
Five year old Fiddlin' Carson Peters and the Rockhouse String Band provide entertainment for the growing audience at 6 PM prior to start of competitions. Here we see Carson performing "Squirrel Heads and Gravy" (yum) and "Cluck Old Hen". Later in the competitions Carson won "First Place, Youth Performance" for his fiddle tune "Whiskey Before Breakfast" (clip coming). Regular Rockhouse members here with Carson are Jamie Peters (guitar, Carson's dad), Rita Quillen (guitar), and Mike "ELWOOD" Elliott (clawhammer banjo). Other regulars not on stage were Kay Elliott (vocals) and Sara Fletcher Collins (Carson's fiddle teacher and a fine fiddler). The Johnson County Old Time Fiddlers Convention has been held now for the 84th consecutive year in Johnson County and for the last 18 consecutive years it has been held at the Old Mill Music Park in Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee. It was held on August 21 and 22, 2009 and it is usually the same weekend that NASCAR comes to Bristol nearby.

http://twitter.com/#!/ManiNasry
Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. There are some people clearly born to follow the path they have chosen from the start. Mani Nasry has the passion to succeed, the curiosity and ingenuity required to lead and collaborate in an industry known for its impact and appeal, and the strength of character and work ethic to immerse himself in finding and telling an unforgettable story.

53rd Journalism Awards Gala (part 1)
A. JOURNALISTS OF THE YEAR
A1. PRINT (Over 50,000 circulations)
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly
Comments: "Range" is an appropriate middle name. What incredibly
detailed reporting on a variety of complicated topics. What an ability to
make us feel as if we know the players. What skill in explaining messy
situations. The very essence of solid journalism.
2nd place: David Evans, Bloomberg Markets, "Duping the Families of
Fallen Soldiers"
HM: Mariel Garza, Los Angeles Daily News Editorials
A2. PRINT (Under 50,000 circulation)
Radley Balko, Reason Magazine
Comment: ―Radley Balko is one of those throw-back journalists that
understands the power of groundbreaking reporting and how to make a
significant impact through his work. Time and time again, his stories cause
readers to stop, think, and most significantly, take action.
Congratulations!‖
2nd Place: Dan Evans, Glendale News-Press
HM: Ryan Vaillancourt, Los Angeles Downtown News
A3. TELEVISION JOURNALIST
Ana Garcia and Fred Mamoun, KNBC-TV
Garcia and Mamoun shoot, write and edit compelling stories. One of
their strengths as a team is the obvious respect for their subjects, and the
ability through contacts in the community to land exclusive interviews and
opportunities. They are strong storytellers and the pieces move!
2nd Place: Antonio Valverde, Univision
Valverde has a wide range as a journalist. He is able to work with various
segments of the community to tell compelling stories. He has political
acumen and can accurately and fairly tell stories, while also reaching out
to the disenfranchised to share their stories of life in L.A.
A4. RADIO JOURNALIST
Susan Valot, KPCC
Comments: Well-rounded reports with authoritative, informed tone. Great
use of sound. Valot‘s work is some of the best we‘ve heard.
2nd Place: Brian Watt: KPCC
HM: Kitty Felde: KPCC
A5. ONLINE JOURNALIST

A7. ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST
Kim Masters, KCRW-FM Radio
Comments: Nice voice in both senses of the word, along with substantive
content. Covering a story about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, she
tracked down Plame to comment on her portrayal, rather than just talking
to the actress. She also gave a lot of information on entertainment agents
that broadened the picture the public was likely to have of that
occupation.
2nd Place: Tara Wallis-Finestone, NBC LA
HM: George Pennacchio, KABC-TV
A8. PHOTO JOURNALIST

B. DAILY/WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS
Over 50,000 circulations – including news bureaus and correspondents
B1. HARD NEWS
Tracy Manzer and Sarah Peters, Long Beach Press-Telegram, "Heroes foil
bank heist"
Comments: The writing was appropriately-paced for the category and
the story content. I enjoyed the writers' use of sensory details and factual
information, presented with a slightly humorous/sarcastic tone that made
this piece fun to read.
B2. NEWS FEATURE
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly, ―The Parent Trigger‖.
Comments: Documents a groundswell of democracy while explaining a
new law through a real-world prism. Powerful. Incredibly well-sourced and
informative, yet provides a human touch. The story of poor minorities trying
to make a change documented how the masses can move the
establishment. Inspiring to others, this story shows what newspaper do like
no other. Bravo.
2nd Place: Thomas Curven, Los Angeles Times, ―Walking Away from Grief‖
HM: Kristopher Hanson, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Dangers Close to

HM: Karen Robes Meeks, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Murchison: A
Portrait of a Long Beach Lobbyist‖
B4. INVESTIGATIVE/SERIES
David Evans, Bloomberg News, "Fallen Soldiers' Families Denied Cash
Payout as Insurers Profit"
Comments: These articles are the soul of great investigative journalism,
uncovering a shocking system whereby the families of slain soldiers are
tricked about benefits, and where shameless insurance companies reap
big profits at the expense of those families.
Best of all, it led to immediate Congressional investigations and action.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "The Dance of the Lemons"
HM: Monica Alonzo and Simone Wilson, LA Weekly, "Culture of Cruelty"
B5. BUSINESS
Alana Semuels, Los Angeles Times, "California unfriendly to business?
Figures say no"
Comments: This is an authoritative and well-documented piece that
refutes the common wisdom of California's tax structure being unfriendly
to business.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "Barry Minkow 2.0"
HM: Donna Howell, Investor's Business Daily,

Reactions to film "Miss Representation"
Reactions to film "Miss Representation" August 2011 In collaboration with the League of Women Voters of Johnson County, 50/50 in 2020, AAUW, Iowa Women's Foundation and the Women's Resource and Action Center, University of Iowa, Landlocked presents the documentary Miss Representation. The film explores women's under-representation in positions of power by challenging the limited and often disparaging portrayal of women in the media. As one of the most persuasive and pervasive forces in our culture, media is educating yet another generation that women's primary value lies in their youth, beauty and sexuality - not in their capacity as leaders.

Bannister Mall 1980-2009
I barely ever went to this mall, i have subtle memories of it. I remember going to see the first Batman movie here back in 1989. "Bannister Mall was a shopping mall on the southeast corner of Kansas City, Missouri that closed on May 31, 2007, after being open for almost 27 years. The site will be reused for a new Kansas City Wizards soccer stadium Bannister Mall was built and opened in August 1980 at 5600 Bannister Road in Kansas City, Missouri between I-435 and Hillcrest Road. The area was once the site of the Three Trails (Santa Fe, California, and Oregon). The mall was one of the largest malls in the Kansas City area in a previously vital and vibrant shopping area. In the early 1980s, Bannister Mall was the "place to go" with a draw over a large area that was mostly from South Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, and Johnson County, Kansas. In 1988-1990, an area north and east of the mall called Benjamin Plaza was added to the commercial retail area. In 1995, the mall was one of two final candidates to host the filming of Kevin Smith's film Mallrats, but when the management objected to the script[citation needed], the Eden Prairie Center in Eden Prarie, Minnesota was chosen instead. By the mid to late 1990s with newer and better deployments further south and in Johnson County Kansas, the area began to wane. Also, due to consistent white flight, the area around Bannister Mall earned a bad reputation as being a high crime area. This combination led to the present ...
