Frederick II a bridge between East and West
Frederick II Hohenstaufen (1194-1250), inheritor of the Germanic Holy Roman Empire and the Normandic kingdom of Sicily, was brought up in the city of Palermo in a multicultural atmosphere par excellence. Whilst consolidating his kingdom, he tackled a series of reforms creating a centralized state with a juridical body which was very advanced for its time. Salerno's School became known as the European vanguard of medicine, collecting together Byzantine, Jewish and Arab medical knowledge These and other advances that were to become a reference point for the following centuries, happened under the patronage and efforts of Frederick II. But probably Frederick II most original characteristic was his ability to go beyond the cultural and religious barriers to create a relationship of cooperation with the Muslims. This led to his strange Crusade and his bloodless conquest of Jerusalem. His attitude deepened the confrontation with the Pope in Rome, something he had already inherited from his predecessors. The lack of prejudice and the inquisitive character of the emperor is shown in his own work "De arte Venandi cum avibus" as well as in his promotion of translations of the Classics and Arabic texts. This cultural acquisition in the Middle Ages from the area of Islam provoked a revision in the beliefs base of Christian Europe and a qualitative leap in the field of arts, science and literature.

Frederick II. of Hohenstaufen
One of the most remarkable medieval rulers was Frederick II., of Hohenstaufen. He was King of Sicily, Germany and Jerusalem and he was Holy Roman Emperor. His interest in science and his tolerance of religious minoreties proved him as a very modern human. His self-conception as Emperor proved him as romantic and as authocrat. His rivalry with the Pope lead to his downfall. Frederick was the "Astonishment of the World".

M2TW, Broken Crescent: Emperor Fredrick I Barbarossa vs Sultan Kilij Arslan II 1/2
the Kingdom of Jerusalem vs the Turkish Sultanate of Rum Although both Royalty Commanders were real historical figures, this is not some historical battle, just a random one. As u can see i didn't want to have Emperor Barbarossa in King Baldwin's jerusalem tunic, shield & banner, so i made some edits myself to Barbarossa's tunic, shield & banner to his real coat of arms hehe. This way he looks much better, doesn't he? rather than looking like the king of Jerusalem. I did the same thing for King Richard the Lionheart & King Philip II Augustus also, cos after this battle i'm uploading 2 more battles with them against Sultan Saladin of the Ayyubids in each one. Anyway, here with the Holy Roman Emperor Fredrick I Barbarossa i'm battling again the Turkish Sultan Kilij Arslan II but this time in Broken Crescent mod. Kilij Arslan II was the son of Kilij Arslan I who battled the crusaders of the 1st Crusade at Doryleaum & elsewhere. His son, Kilij Arslan II did indeed rule when Emperor Fredrick Barbarossa defeated the Turks & conquered their capital Iconium (Konya), but to my knowladge, they never met in battle cos the commander who led a large Turkish army against Barbarossa was Qutb al-Din. During this battle after i defeated the Sultan & his army, he narrowly escaped with his life when i was chasing him. Anyway, i hope u'll like my new edited Barbarossa....

Stefan George: Der Siebente Ring
The German poet Stefan George (1868-1933) was a considerable figure in German poetry in the period from the beginning of last century until the end of the second world war when his name sank very quickly from sight due in no small part to the perceived sympathy between himself and the Nazi party. George's circle used the swastika (which is of course nothing more than a sun symbol of ancient provenance) in its publications before the birth of the Nazis. The Nazis would have liked to have used George's celebrated name as an endorsment of their own beliefs but he on the whole shunned the crasser forms of publicity. For anyone seeking fuller information on George, the recent biography by the American Robert E Norton, 'Stefan George and his Circle' (Cornell University Press, 2002) is invaluable as well as being one of the most interesting biographies I have read for a long time. It was Norton's book which inspired me to write the following poem. George was a great admirer of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II Hohenstaufen (1194-1250) nicknamed stupor mundi (world's wonder). In 1902 George and his disciple Gundolf visited the newly opened imperial crypt in the cathedral at Speyer, the last resting place of (among others) Beatrix the second wife of Frederick Barbarossa the grandfather of Frederick II and thus in a sense the genetrix of the Staufer clan. Later in life George met and befriended the von Stauffenberg brothers, the twins Berthold and Alexander and their brother ...

k where do i begin?!!
this summer has been incredibly busy, from vancouver, to miami, to sydney, to hawaii, to niagara falls (haha k this is only a 200km drive) shooting weddings, teaching workshops, shooting corporate promos + commercials and of course shooting more weddings.
things are taking longer then expected but b4 i launch my website + 2010 highlights; i want to quickly share with you the first ever myw multi day south asian wedding that i attended this past weekend.
while i've had the oppurtunity to shoot hindu and sikh indian weddings in the past this was the first time i've shot a 5 day (yes 5 day) Ismaili wedding; and i sure had a TON of learning to do. I was up with farzana + shameer @ their place (luckly they live 2 mins away from me!! hehe) till 5 am, after a 4 hour pre-wedding consultation to learn exactly all of the different rituals, ceremonies, scarves, certain drinks that have cultural/religious/mythological significance to them and their culture. needless to say my head pretty much exploded but i was pumpppppeed to make this happen.
and while its hard to not notice, farzana + shameer are obviously a stunning looking couple, but they are also super warm, down to earth, approachable, caring and just all around awesome!!! their bridal party, friends and family were supppper amazing as well.
i REALALLLLLLYY love you guys!!! thank you for having me document your wedding.
TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
- being a multi-day event requiring many symmetrical ceremonies happening @ the same time, I contracted my internationally acclaimed wedding cinematographer/educator/best friend konrad czystowski to help me shoot the events that i couldnt personally shoot myself due to logistical limitations. one of the most important lessons l learned from internationally acclaimed ray roman while teaching @ his workshop in miami a month ago; was that he stressed how important it is to build solid relationships with great, honest and genuine ppl who can help us in our journey in this industry. in turn, konrad brings me to shoot a wedding with him in hawaii... WOOHOO!!!
now to give you an idea of how much work was involved in this weddng, here is a breakdown.
-WEDNESDAY henna ceremony - shot by myw + 1 5D mkii. the ceremony was 6 hours.
-THURSDAY henna ceremony for the bridesmaids + women from the grooms side of the family. this is the day where the siblings of both the bride and groom goto the mosque and fill up the guri with holy water and bring it back home for the bride and groom to bathe in it. various other ceremonies (egging of the groom, eating of butter chicken (heheh), more to be explained below) also occur on thursday as well. i would say this was another 7 hours or so. both Konrad and myself used one Canon 5D mkII to cover everything. konrad @ groom's house while I was at the brides.
-FRIDAY this was the day the bride and groom, as well as both their respective families get to finally meet and see eachother, this was @ a reception gathering. I shot this mostly myself with Konrad helping out for 3 hours. Total amount of time I would say I was shooting on and off was another 10 hours.
-SATURDAY this was the break day where no shooting was involved and I basically went through a good 30 hours of footage and edited + transcoded between multiple machines straight an entire day (and night). Konrad's pre sequenced and rough-cut timelines were a huge help in making this possible.
-SUNDAY I marched on the big wedding day on SUNDAY without a single second of sleep. Yes I almost cried in agony from editing during the middle of the night. Nevertheless, Konrad was at my house 7:45am, and the worlds busiest/most talented 16 year old boy wonder cinematographer Mark Klassen arrived too, and my trusty protege from scratch and Troy Turgano also helped with the editing duties all day. This wedding day ran from 8 am to about 1am, and had 2 sets of preps, 2 first meetings, 2 photosessions, 1 wedding ceremony and 1 wedding reception.
this piece was shot entirely with Canon 5DmkII's in 24p mode.
there is no doubt that the 5Dmkii currently provides the highest value/dollar HDSLR in event filmmaking industry today. it is better then the 7D due to it's full frame capabilities, cleaner low light and richer color reproduction. when i compare the 5d to the 1dmk4; I do notice that the 1dmk4 is better in low light, and the 1dmk4's crop factor is better in certain cases (removing mild vignetting in some lenses as well as removing the less sharp image characteristics @ the edges of an image); but for the price of a single 1dmk4, i can purchases 2 5dmkii's. it's a complete no brainer.
- as both konrad and I taught in sydney australia 2 weeks ago and did a

Journey Through the Cross: #2 The Power of God
Paul, Bond-Slave to the King!
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul designates his highest office as bond-servant (doulos). He puts that before his office as apostle.
Paul calls himself a bond slave of Christ Jesus. The case classification is genitive of possession. The apostle is proud of the fact that he is a slave belonging to his Lord. There were certain individuals in the Roman empire designated "Slaves of the Emperor." This was a position of honor. One finds a reflection of this in Paul's act of designating himself as a slave of the King of kings. He puts this ahead of his apostleship.
You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ESV)
We are not our own, and Paul was proud of that fact. Instead of seeing Christianity as a system of do's and don'ts, he saw it as the privilege of privileges. His was a position of honor.
Who you are in life is largely a result of how you see yourself. We tend to value our life on the basis of our job, our possessions, our influence, our friends, our activities. Paul saw his value by Whose he was. He was a servant of the King of Kings. Who are you? When you lay in bed at night, do you fret about your health, the things you need to do, the things you didn't do? If you are a slave of the King of Kings, you have no rights over tomorrow, over your body, over your job. He has total control. There is no need to fret, no need to worry, no need to be concerned. Only the need to praise Him, draw closer to Him, wait patiently upon Him.
He was a slave first, an apostle second.
The adjective comes from the verb kaleō, "to call" in the sense here of "to call to assume an office." Paul was a called apostle in the sense that God summoned him to that position and placed him in it
Most translations say called to be an apostle, but actually the greek simply says (κλητὸς ἀπόστολος) "kletos apostolos", called apostle.
Paul heard the call of Christ on the Damascus Road, and in answering that call and seeing His Savior, he was placed as one of Christ's Apostles. He took the place of the son of perdition-Judas.
What enabled the violent, self-possessed Saul to become the slave Apostle of the one he admittedly wanted crucified?
Paul allowed himself to be set apart for the Gospel of God!
But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, Galatians 1:15 (ESV)
But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. Acts 9:15 (ESV)
Paul became a chosen instrument, a chosen vessel for Jesus Christ! Was he forced to comply on the Damascus Road? It may seem that way. Blinded by a strange light, hearing a strange voice-he could have resisted and kept on kicking against the Lord. Or he could have made a profession, but inwardly resented the Jesus. In any case we never would have heard from old Paul again. He would have been a pothole on the pavement of life.
But something happened to this fiery little dynamo. All his training, his intelligence, his passion for the Law and the ways of the Jews melted away when he gazed upon the one whom he had been persecuting. Yes, Paul was made to realize that he had not only been maiming and murdering 'Christians', but he had been doing the same to the very Son of God, the Messiah whom he professed to love so much.
We can't begin to fathom what the Holy Spirit was doing in those three days after his experience on the road to Damascus. But whatever it was, when Saul gave his life to Jesus Christ, he was changed completely. He was a new man, he was set apart no longer to just Jehovah. He was set apart into the GOSPEL of GOD! (ἀφωρισμένος εἰς εὐαγγέλιον Θεοῦ (aphōrismenos eis euangelion Theo).
Set Apart Into the Gospel
aphōrismenos (aphorizmo)
He was set apart into the Gospel, because the set apart is the word aphoridzo which pictures marking an area with boundaries, with a wall or fence.
So it will be at the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous Matthew 13:49 (ESV)
The Gospel of God is a natural divider of man. It will be the divider in the end times. People, you can either believe God or you can chose not to.

The Will of God Isn't...but Is...pt 2
This message will attempt to shed light on two things:
1. What the Will of God Isn’t
2. What the Will of God Is
First we must see the three major components of God’s Will:
LIVING IN THE WILL OF GOD WILL ALWAYS INVOLVE THESE THREE COMPONENTS:
1. Eternal Life
And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 17:3
To know the Will of God will involve having eternal life, which means to know God. So here is circular reasoning-To Know God’s Will You must Know God. To Know God you must have Eternal Life. To have eternal life, you must know God. To know God’s will is to know God.
2. Wisdom
that their hearts may be encouraged…to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. … Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, Colossians 2:2-6
that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, Ephesians 1:17
Wisdom is “seeing Life from God’s Point of View.” Knowing God’s Will will always involve seeing Life from His point of View. After all, it is His Will!
Wisdom will always involve more of Jesus Christ in your life, for in Christ are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Living in the will of God will always involve walking in Jesus Christ.
Now since living in the Will of God involves Wisdom I need to point out how you get wisdom.
JAMES GIVES THIS ADVICE ABOUT GETTING WISDOM
Jas 1:5-8 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
You must want to see life from God’s point of view badly enough that you are willing to forsake everything this world has to offer. If you ask for wisdom, if you ask to live in God’s will, yet part of you wants this or wants that, contrary to God’s righteousness, then you will not get wisdom from God. You will not see life from His point of view. You will continue to be like the waves of the sea, tossing to and fro, lost from God’s will.
3. Faith
Living in the Will of God involves pleasing God. And Hebrews 11:6 says without Faith it is impossible to please God. By faith Moses left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. Hebrews 11:27. Faith allows us to See God and what He wants to do with our lives.
Faith in your life will do Two Things:
1. Faith will allow you to see God behind everything that happens in your life.
2. Faith keeps you in a place where you are not sure what will happen next.
• If you can see the road ahead you don’t need to Trust God.
Living in the Will of God will always involve eternal life, wisdom and faith.
WHERE DO WE START?
In order to know what the Will of God is, we must know what it isn’t. Here are four common Falsehoods about the Will of God:
FALSEHOOD #1: God Wants Us to Know the Future
This is the biggest mistake we Christians make with regard to living in the Will of God.
Just because God has led a certain way does not guarantee the end result. We keep trying to look down the road so we can figure out the direction God is taking us.
It is rarely God’s will for you to know your entire personal future.
God doesn’t light the entire road. He promises just enough light for your step ahead.
Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”
In fact they made little oil lamps that attached to your ankles. This would allow you to carry a load and still have light. But it was only enough light for one step.
So this verse pictures a man in total darkness walking along a dangerous trail. There is no moon in the sky. Darkness clings to him. His only light comes from the lamp strapped to his ankle. When he takes that step, what happens to the light? It goes forward one more step. The light is not bright enough to illuminate even five feet ahead.
Let’s face the truth–we want to know the future. At least we think we do. We want to know what is going to happen next year, so we can be ready in advance. But God doesn’t play that game with us.
The Bible says, “The secret things belong to the LORD our God” (Deuteronomy 29:29).
Does he know what will happen tomorrow? Yes, he does; but he’s not telling anyone else about it. Or to put it in familiar terms, does God have a blueprint for your life? Yes, he does; but there is no blueprint room where you can go to get a copy.
Suppose God were to offer you a folder with the details of your life (and for your loved ones also) for the next 10 years. Would you ta

M2TW, Broken Crescent: Emperor Fredrick I Barbarossa vs Sultan Kilij Arslan II 2/2
the Kingdom of Jerusalem vs the Turkish Sultanate of Rum Although both Royalty Commanders were real historical figures, this is not some historical battle, just a random one.

Tailer Frederic II a bridge between East and West
