Ancient West African Megacities
Centuries BEFORE the coming of Islam and before the days of the Songhay, Mali and Ghana Empires (and thus before Timbuktu was built), there were some massive cities in the Niger basin region which rivalled those of Mesopotamia.

Giraffes stage a comeback in West Africa
Distinguished by its light coloured spots, the West African giraffe once roamed in pockets across Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Benin, that is until drought and hunting decimated their numbers. In 1996, with just 50 left in the wild, conservationists in Niger launched a campaign to protect them from poachers. And as Al Jazeera's Tarek Bazley explains, their gradual return has been helped in part by a rise in tourists.

West African leaders head to Mali for talks
A delegation of army chiefs from the Economic Community of West African States bloc has arrived in Bamako ahead of a team of six heads of state as Mali's neighbours attempt to restore constitutional order after last week's coup. Led by Blaise Compaore, president of Burkina Faso, the ECOWAS leaders' team is expected to arrive on Thursday even as several thousand people took to the streets of the capital in support of the coup and to protest against the possible use of force by Mali's neighbours. The visit comes as toppled president Amadou Toumani Toure, whose whereabouts have been unknown since he was overthrown on March 22, told the AFP news agency that he was safe in Bamako and was not being held by the coup leaders. Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports from Bamako.

Hebrew Israelites in West Africa - Pt. 5 of 5 -The End
This video adds prophecy and history as the final proof of the flee of Israelites from Israel to West Africa "It seems certain," declares Sir EA Wallis Budge, "that classical historians and geographers called the whole region from India to Egypt, both countries inclusive, by the name of Ethiopia, and in consequence they regarded all the dark-skinned and black peoples who inhabited it as Ethiopians. Mention is made of Eastern and Western Ethiopians and it is probable that the Easterners were Asiatics and the Westerners Africans." (History of Ethiopia, Vol. I., Preface, by Sir EA Wallis Budge.)

west african civilizations
The bronzes of Benin are the outcome of a long tradition of bronze casting which can be traced back over more than two millennia to the ancient Nok people, who lived on the plains of Jos and the Yoruba people who flourished between the 10th and the 19th Centuries In the south and west of Nigeria. Among the oldest known African sculptures are terracotta figures created by the Nok people around 500 AD. Superb bronze and terra cotta heads were also made in what is now Ife, Nigeria from the 1200's onwards. The 'Obas' held a monopoly of sculptures in brass - Chiefs were only allowed ancestral figures in terra cotta and metalworkers were the servants of the 'Oba'. Benin art was thus predominantly Royal and so closely tied to the rituals used in service of divine Kingship that it underwent few modifications over the generations. There can be little doubt that this West African art was an indigenous development fuelled by the need for lifelike images of Royalty for funerary rituals and the cult of ancestors from whom the Kings derived their significant power and authority. In the former Kingdom of Benin, Western Nigeria, great artists produced high quality hand made bronze sculptured figures and heads during the 1400's and up to the early part of the 1700's. The art of Benin is close in feeling to contemporary Buddhist art in India and South-east Asia. Few people outside Africa knew about African sculpture until the 1900's when it became a major influence on western art. The ...

West Africa - (2) Principe
April 2012. A short zodiac trip brought us to the dock of the Bom Bom Island Resort on the island of Principe. We walked for several hours on clay roads made muddy by the previous night's torrential rains. The island was alive with birds and tropical vegetation. Following lunch we rode the zodiac out into the bay to see the island from afar and get up close to the various sea birds perched on vocanic residue. It was a lovely visit.
