Wide of traffic STORYLINE Gay rights advocates across the world have cheered US President Barack Obama's declaration of unequivocal support for gay marriage, an historic announcement that gave the polarising social issue a more prominent role in the 2012 race for the White House. In South Korea, the county's first openly gay actor Hong Suk-chon welcomed the president's comments, saying his support for gay marriage was "a hopeful light for people like us". The 41-year-old actor and restaurant owner, whose revelation in 2000 caused a sensation in South Korea, said he hopes to see the same kind of approach to same-sex marriage from a future South Korean leader. "When a good leader comes along in South Korea who accepts the diversity and who has a warm interest to those who are different, maybe we can hear those similar words as well in the future," Hong said. South Korea, is a deeply Confucian society with a strong Catholic church that in the past refused to acknowledge the existence of homosexuality, branding it as a Western malaise. In recent years, however, South Korea has became more open to the issue. "People should be free to feel what they feel. They say people get married when they are in love, so if they like each other and this does not affect anybody around them, I think homosexual love is not something bad," Lee Yoon-sun, 23-year-old university student said. South Korea does not outlaw homosexuality. But the gay rights movement was nonexistent until the mid-1990s, when a few college students began coming out at campus and a small group of homosexuals began networking through Web sites. And he said he believes his revelation was important for Korean society, bringing about changes in the way gay people are perceived. South Korea does not outlaw homosexuality. It's only been days since the U.S. warned of tougher sanctions on the regime for continued with its nuclear and missile tests. Kim Hyun-bin give us the latest. North Korea launched two ballistic missiles on Friday morning from Sukchon in the country's southwest. Military officials say the missile,... presumed to be a medium-range Nodong missile, flew eight-hundred kilometers before falling into the East Sea The other missile was fired from the same location but disappeared from radar at an altitude of 17 kilometers. A South Korean military official says it most likely malfunctioned and blew up in mid-air. ""We believe North Korea is rushing to develop a nuclear tipped ballistic missile by order of Kim Jong-un." South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles seem to have been fired from a transporter erector launcher or TEL. North Korea last test-fired a Nodong missile in March 2014. It has a range of up to 13-hundred kilometers putting Seoul and Tokyo within striking distance. More concerning,... is that the missile warheads can be loaded with bio-chemical substances. "The ministry says it is keeping a close eye on North Korea's nuclear and missile development and added that it will maintain the highest readiness to instantly counter any threats from the regime Military officials say that the recent launch seems to be in protest of the South Korea-U.S. annual joint military drills known as Key Resolve and Foal Eagle. Friday is the final day of Key Resolve, a computer program war game exercise that aims to enhance interoperability between the two allies. We have Kim Hyun-bin on the line from the defense ministry in Seoul. Hyun-bin tells us more. Mark. As you mentioned, North Korea launched two ballistic missiles. The first was fired at 5:55am, South Korea time, from Sukchon in the country's southwest. Officials here say the missile,... presumed to be a medium-range Nodong missile, flew eight-hundred kilometers before falling into the East Sea The other one was fired 15 minutes later from the same location. That one disappeared from radar at an altitude of 17 kilometers. A South Korean military official says it most likely malfunctioned and blew up in mid-air. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles were fired from a transporter erector launcher also known as a TEL. North Korea last test-fired a Nodong missile in March 2014. It has a range of up to 13-hundred kilometers putting Seoul and Tokyo within striking distance. Making matters more concerning,... the missiles' warhead can be loaded with bio-chemical substances. Not a missile to be taken lightly then. Hyun-bin,... North Korea rarely just launches these kind of missiles spontaneously,... what prompted the North to do this today? Well,... there is a good chance these launches were in protest against South Korea and the U.S.'s annual joint military drills known as Key Resolve and Foal Eagle. Today is actually the final day of Key Resolve, a computer program war game exercise that aims to enhance interoperability between the two allies. Foal Eagle consists of numerous field training exercises and that will run through the end of April. Washington has already deployed one of its nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and nuclear submarine for the drills. There's also word the U.S. could deploy a B-2 stealth bomber and other key strategic weaponry to the peninsula before Foal Eagle ends... as a symbol of the strength of the Seoul-Washington alliance.
