Genesis 30 (New International Version) Genesis 30 1 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, "Give me children, or I'll die!" 2 Jacob became angry with her and said, "Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?" 3 Then she said, "Here is Bilhah, my maidservant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and that through her I too can build a family." 4 So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife. Jacob slept with her, 5 and she became pregnant and bore him a son. 6 Then Rachel said, "God has vindicated me; he has listened to my plea and given me a son." Because of this she named him Dan. Taste of Torah with Rabbi Adam Kligfeld - December 16, 2011
I spent time with the Pressman Academy 7th graders recently discussing Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and the transition to maturity that this life cycle event is meant to encourage and nurture. Though 12- and 13- year-old boys and girls are, appropriately, still very much children in our society, many of them articulated well the kind of adult thinking and adult acting that would be required of them post-BM. I was impressed with their vision for how youthfulness ought to yield to maturity. According to R. Ovadiah S'forno, a 16th century Italian scholar and commentator, Yosef's lack of such vision at an age when he should have had it invited the familial and national trauma that begins with his dreams of dominance. His comment is on a word, itself quite normal, but which is used oddly in the beginning of Parshat Vayeshev. After telling us that Yosef is 17th years old, the Torah then says והוא נער, which means "he was a lad." Several questions arise. 1) After telling us Yosef's age, why do we need to be told he is a lad? 2) The remainder of the phrase suggests that the word נער here is being used as a verb, not as a noun. What does it mean to say he "youthed," as it were? And how is that relevant to the story? Rashbam, Rashi's grandson, explains that the word נער, followed by the phrase "את בני בלהה ואת בני זלפה" (with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah) teaches that Yosef "spent his childhood" with the children of his father's concubines, Bilhah and Zilpah, rather than with ...

Testament of Reuben (Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs)
The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs is a constituent of the apocryphal scriptures connected with the Bible. It is a pseudepigraphical work comprising the dying commands of the twelve sons of Jacob. It is part of the Oscan Armenian Orthodox Bible of 1666. Fragments of similar writings were found at Qumran, but opinions are divided as to whether these are the same texts. It is considered Apocalyptic literature. The Testaments were written in Greek, and reached their final form in the second century CE. In the 13th century they were introduced into the West through the agency of Robert Grosseteste, Bishop of Lincoln, whose Latin translation of the work immediately became popular. He believed that it was a genuine work of the twelve sons of Jacob, and that the Christian interpolations were a genuine product of Jewish prophecy; he accused Jews of concealing the Testaments "on account of the prophecies of the Saviour contained in them." With the critical methods of the 16th century, Grosseteste's view of the Testaments was rejected, and the book was disparaged as a mere Christian forgery for nearly four centuries. Presently, scholarly opinions are still divided as to whether the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs is an originally Jewish document that has been retouched by Christians, or a Christian document written originally in Greek but based on some earlier Semitic-language material. Scholarship tends to focus on this book as a Christian work, whether or not it has a ...

genesis chapter 35 God sent Jacob to Bethel to build an alter. One for the God that appeared when Jacob was running from his brother Esau. Jacob told everyone in his stead to change their clothes and get rid of their alien gods. Jacob buried all the alien gods and ear rings. Terror from God kept other cities from attacking Jacob. Back in Canaan with his people, Jacob built an alter and gave it a name. Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, was buried under an oak tree. She was dead. That too received a name. God dealt out a few more blessings. "Hey Jacob, change your name to Israel." Thus was it. "I am El Shaddai make some babies A nation, a bunch of nations shall descend from you kings will come from your scrotum You can have the land that Ab and Isaac had. God left. Jacob piled up some stones, oiled them and gave it a name. Off they went to Bethal. On the way Rachel had a baby and died. Luckily, it was a boy. Benjamin. They buried Rachel and piled rocks up again. Israel went on. Reuben had an affair with Bilhah, his father's mistress. Israel got the news. So what. (I was just wondering why Israel failed to call himself a king) Jacob, who's name was Israel a sentence ago, had 12 sons. To keep things strait: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issacher and Zebulun. Genesis 37 (New International Version) Genesis 37 Joseph's Dreams 1 Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan. 2 This is the account of Jacob. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented [a] robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. 5 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, "Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it." 8 His brothers said to him, "Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?" And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said. 9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. "Listen," he said, "I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me." 10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, "What is this dream you had? Genesis chapter 35 Torah reading and remarks by Irreverent John Rah
chapter 35 God told Jacob to take his plunder and new slaves to Bethel. So Jacob collected all the alien gods and buried them. Told everyone to change his clothes. Everyone feared the genocide freaks, for some reason unknown to your humble narrator. In Bethel they built an alter, called the place "The God of Bethal". That's were Jacob had talked to god 20 odd years earlier. Deborah died. Was buried. Who was Deborah. Jacob was reminded by God to call himself Israel. He didn't catch it the last time. Was too concerned about not eating hip meat. And God also reminded Jacob that he was God Almighty. And like so often, and it will be repeated every few chapters until God goes away. Be fertile. Make a great army. And Rachel was dying giving birth to the 12th son. Her second. Vs. 17: "Have no fear, for it is another boy for you." EQ. Reuben fucked Bilhah, one of Jacobs concubines, and Israel found out. And a fly landed on a sheep shit. Isaac died and Esau and Jacob buried him. "Eat me, this way, the end." The Holy Bible - Genesis Chapter 37 (King James Version)
Genesis Chapter 37: 1And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. 2These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. 3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. 4And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. 5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. 6And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: 7For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. 8And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. 9And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me. 10And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed?
