Controlling Nitrates in a Saltwater Aquarium
Nitrates can kill every fish and coral you have in your tank if they aren't kept in check. The good news is that keeping them in check requires patience and using several nitrate reducing tools that I cover in this episode of Mr. Saltwater Tank TV. NOTE: From now on, if you want to comment or ask me a question, the only place to do that is on my blog: www.mrsaltwatertank.com

How to Make Potassium Nitrate at Home
How to make potassium nitrate at home with instant cold packs and "sodium-free" salt. "Sodium-free" salt is actually potassium chloride. Instant cold packs contain ammonium nitrate and if the two are mixed potassium nitrate and ammonium chloride are formed in equilibrium. Fortunately potassium nitrate has lower solubility than ammonium chloride at colder temperatures giving us a means of separation. Just mix 40 grams of ammonium nitrate with 100mL of water and stir until dissolved. Filter the mixture directly into 37 grams of potassium chloride. Gently heat until completely dissolved, do not boil. Cool the mixture to 0 Celsius in the freezer or on an ice bath. Filter the crystals and dry them. Now you have potassium nitrate. To test it mix 2 parts potassium nitrate with one part sugar and light it up. It should burn with a purple/pinkish flame.

How to Make Ammonium Nitrate
In this video we make ammonium nitrate from various off-the-shelf chemicals. Note: This is not cheaper than buying it directly, once again our objective is to explore the chemistry. Warning: The chemicals are corrosive and ammonia has a horrible smell, work outside or in a fumehood and wear gloves. First get 138 grams of sodium bisulfate and add just enough water to dissolve it, usually 300mL. Then get one mole equivalent of a pure nitrate salt. Some common salts include: Sodium nitrate: 85 grams. Potassium nitrate: 101 grams. Calcium nitrate: 118 grams (if using tetrahydrate) Dissolve the nitrate in a minimum of water, then mix the two solutions together. Neutralize the mixture with ammonia (using a pH meter to determine the endpoint). Filter the mixture to get rid of any insoluble materials if needed, then boil until sodium sulfate begins to precipitate. Then cool the mixture to 0 Celsius and filter. Dry the filtrate to obtain ammonium nitrate mixed with some leftover metal sulfates. For higher purity the solids can be mixed with 500mL of methanol which selectively dissolves ammonium nitrate. Filter again and evaporate the filtrate to obtain pure ammonium nitrate.

Make Silver Nitrate From Silver and Nitric Acid
How to make Silver Nitrate from Silver and Nitric acid. WARNING: This reaction produces toxic nitrogen dioxide gas. Do not perform this reaction indoors, only do it in a fumehood or outside. Simply place some pure silver in concentrated nitric acid and heat it up. The reaction proceeds too slowly in cold nitric acid to be useful. Wrap your silver in aluminum wire to better control the reaction. If it proceeds out of control and fizzes too much or generates too much gas too fast then you can pull the silver out of the acid to stop the reaction. Only aluminum is resistant to nitric acid, other metals are destroyed and will contaminate your acid. We're going to use the silver nitrate to perform silver chloride photography, making mirrors, and even making flash powder. So please subscribe, rate and comment! Make Europium and Dysprosium Nitrate salts.
In this video we make europium and dysprosium nitrate salts we'll need in upcoming videos. Instead of buying the salts directly from our chemical supply companies we decided to make them entirely using chemicals anyone can buy online or make themselves. In this case europium metal and dysprosium metal with nitric acid. The europium and dysprosium metal were purchased online from: elementsales.com The nitric acid was produced in our nitric acid video: www.youtube.com The procedures for both salts is rather simple. First, obtain 2.5 grams of europium. Europium comes in mineral oil so it must be washed off with toluene. Then the europium is placed in a beaker where a total of 10 mL of water is added in small portions. This is added before the acid for safety reasons. After all the water is added and the reaction seems to have slowed down 10mL of concentrated 15.6 molar nitric acid is added. The solution is then heated to ensure complete reaction of all the metal bits. For dysprosium: 5g of dysprosium can be directly added to a mixture of 20mL of water and 20mL Nitric acid. Once again, heating the solution ensures complete reaction. Both nitrates are allowed to dry in the desiccator bag we made last week: www.youtube.com Afterward, the nitrates are transferred to vials for storage and labeled. The europium salt produced will be Europium Nitrate pentahydrate The dysprosium salt produced will be dysprosium nitrate pentahydrate. We're going to use these nitrates for some cool ...

Make Glass Mirrors with Silver Nitrate
How to make a mirror silvering solution from silver nitrate, ammonia, sugar and sodium hydroxide. Glass surfaces can be given coatings of silver that make them into mirrors. WARNING: Perform the whole experiment in less than two hours. This is because the solution generates extremely dangerous/explosive silver nitride on standing. Also, the solution will give off ammonia when heated so you'll need to do this outside, in a fume hood or in a well-ventilated area. And wash away all chemicals with lots of water. To do this, you first need the silver nitrate we made in a previous video: www.youtube.com Get one gram of silver nitrate and one gram of sodium hydroxide. Then add enough water to both to completely dissolve them. Mix them together and you'll get a black precipitate of silver oxide. Then add enough ammonia to completely dissolve the silver oxide. Add four grams of sugar and mix well. The solution will deposit silver coatings when its heated. If you heat it in a glass container it will deposit silver on the inside of the container. To deposit it onto a glass pane you can put the glass into a tray with solution and heat the tray from below. But do not let the solution boil. Boiling tears the silver off the surface. Thin layers of silver can be wiped off with a cloth if the silver goes where you don't want it. Thicker layers can be removed by applying hydrochloric acid. This process produces a back reflective mirror, which is what most household mirrors are. For more ...

Make Cobalt and Manganese Nitrates
We show how to make Cobalt nitrate and Manganese nitrate needed to make manganese dioxide electrodes. WARNING: These are heavy metals and toxic if mishandled. In addition cobalt is carcinogenic. You MUST wear gloves and preferably additional safety equipment like dust masks and lab coat. A fumehood is recommended too. Making cobalt nitrate is very easy, just get cobalt carbonate from a pottery supply store and mix it with twice its mass in water. Then add nitric acid until it stops fizzing. That's all! The red solution can be dried to make cobalt nitrate crystals for storage. Making manganese nitrate is a little more complicated. Manganese dioxide is mixed with oxalic acid, water and nitric acid to produce manganese nitrate. Alternatively you can bubble nitrogen dioxide directly into the manganese dioxide. If the solution is yellow it's because there is some iron contamination. But this is not a problem for making manganese dioxide electrodes.

Make Sodium Nitrate, A Potassium Nitrate Substitute
How to make sodium nitrate, which can substitute for potassium nitrate in almost all pyrotechnic purposes except flame color. Note: Sodium Nitrate is somewhat hygroscopic. Stuff you make from it such as pyrotechnic compositions should be used soon after making and not stored for extended periods of time. WARNING: Both procedures produce large quantities of ammonia gas. You have to do this experiment outside or in a fumehood. First get ammonium nitrate from an instant cold pack as seen in our previous video: www.youtube.com For the baking soda method. Get 80 grams of ammonium nitrate and dissolve it in 150mL of water. Filter it off directly into 84 grams of sodium bicarbonate, which is baking soda. Don't expect it to dissolve, it won't. Boil the mixture down to 100mL or less. This is needed to decompose the ammonium bicarbonate that's formed. You cannot simply evaporate the mixture. The boiling will release large amounts of ammonia so you have to do this outside or in a fumehood. Once it's boiled, leave it to evaporate until dry. Sodium nitrate will decompose if heated too strongly so you cannot boil it down all the way dry unless you can ensure the temperature never goes above 200 Celsius. Leaving a little water is the safest way to ensure the best product. For the sodium hydroxide method: Place 80 grams of ammonium nitrate in a tall container and pour 40 grams of sodium hydroxide on top. Then carefully pour 30mL of water and stand back. It will quickly react to generate ...
