Insights From The Kol Menachem Haggadah
To Order Visit: www.kolmenachem.com Insights for your Passover Seder The Gutnick Library of Jewish Classics once again presented a beautiful work with the Kol Menachem Haggadah. The set-up of the contents is very helpful and user-friendly: the Haggadah-text itself, the relevant instructions for the procedures of the Seder, the section of classic questions on the various passages and their answers, and the more elaborate commentary, are expertly separated with clear notation of the sources. In short, this new and attractively printed Haggadah is very handy and useful for everyone, and no doubt will help make the experience of the Seder both enlightening and inspiring. Thank you again for a job well done. -RABBI J. IMMANUEL SCHOCHET, PROFESSOR-EMERITUS OF PHILOSOPHY, HUMBER COLLEGE, TORONTO

Learn more about The Washington Haggadah: Medieval Jewish Art in Context on view at the Met April 5, 2011--June 26, 2011: met.org Katrin Kogman-Appel, Evelyn Metz Memorial Research Chair in Art, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva, Israel This presentation features the Washington Haggadah, one of the most important illustrated Hebrew manuscripts preserved in an American public collection and an unprecedented loan from the Library of Congress. A Haggadah is the book used at the Passover seder, the ritual meal that commemorates the exodus of the ancient Israelites from Egypt. Although the essential components of the text were established in the second century, the Haggadah was first made into an independent, illustrated book in the Middle Ages. With captivating images in tempera and gold on parchment, the Washington Haggadah bears the date January 29, 1478, and the signature of the renowned scribe and illuminator Joel ben Simeon. Born in Cologne around 1420, Joel ben Simeon worked in both Germany and northern Italy. Ten Hebrew manuscripts bearing his signature survive, and haggadot were something of a specialty. Certain details of the text of the Washington Haggadah—including an early, specific reference to horseradish as the bitter herb to be used at the meal—distinguish this book as one created while Joel ben Simeon was working in Germany. The Haggadah offers particularly strong testimony to the vitality of visual arts in Jewish life. Its margins display ...

The Sarajevo Haggadah, a Jewish illuminated manuscript dating back more than 650 years, has survived everything from the Spanish Inquisition to the Siege of Sarajevo, which began 20 years ago this week. Now it is threatened once again -- this time, by the lack of funding for Sarajevo's cultural institutions. Producer Ricki Green looks at the book's history as Jews around the world celebrate Passover, the holiday when the Haggadah is read.
