2010.05.03 - RV-8 Test Flight - Part I - Takeoff
After 23 months and 2400 hours of building, RV-8 N998RV took to the air for the very first time on May 3 2010. As one would hope with any test flight, it was uneventful and a pleasure to fly. This Part I of my RV-8 Test Flight documents the startup, taxi out, take off, and the first circuit around the airport. The trip to Oregon the week before to fly with Mike Seager was the best money I spent on the project. During the video, listen for the tower calling out "Eight Romeo Victor" which is the call sign for my aircraft - N998RV. The audio mix is from the cockpit including the music, tower, and my various comments during the flight. As of November 20 2010, I have about 124 hours total time on the RV-8. It just gets more and more fun to fly! The Lycoming IO-390 and Constant Speed Prop are a sweet combination on the RV-8! The triple Grand Rapids HX EFIS installation along with the Vertical Power VP-200 electrical system and TruTrak two-axis Autopilot have also performed flawlessly. I highly recommend these fine products. Finally, if you've been debating on whether to install an entertainment system in your project, don't hesitate! The PS Engineering 3000 Stereo intercom, Kenwood DNX8150, and the Bose X headsets are an incredibly sweet combination that make those long cross countries just fly by! Passengers love having the secondary LCD screen in the pilot's headrest and high-fidelity entertainment as well. The Kenwood's Garmin GPS Map display is also a big hit with the ...

In 1985 Bob Gandt and his partners, Harry Shepard, Ron Keilin and Carl Pascarell, formed the Redhawk Aerobatic Team. Flying their Siai-Marchetti fighter-trainers (rescued from a military boneyard in the Congo), they performed their formation aerobatic routine for over three million air show spectators.

RV8 Crosswind, Gusty, Lumpy, Bumpy FUN Landing @ N57 2/10/07
In the middle of having fun area flying I noticed the wind speed was really picking up on the GRT EFIS display so I went back early to New Garden and had some fun with a direct crosswind at a pretty good clip and of course the hills, gaps in trees and buildings made the wind all that much more fun to negotiate! Tailwheels are a blast!!

Aero-TV: Vans Aircraft Factory - Where the RV SportPlanes Begin
Join ANN on a Tour of the Vans Aircraft Facility in Aurora, Oregon The 60000 square foot Vans Aircraft facility, located in Aurora Oregon, is a far cry from the companys beginnings. Over 30 years ago, in a small shop behind his house in Reedville, Oregon, Richard VanGrunsven pursued his love of aviation. While not working as a mechanical engineer, he spent his hours designing and building his first plane, a re-engineered Playboy airframe. Renamed the RV-1, the aircraft had a 125 hp Lycoming engine, bubble canopy, Hoerner style wingtips, and a set of cantilever aluminum wings. From 1965 to 1968, Van flew the RV-1 over 550 hours, but still felt that something with better performance could be achieved. In the early 1970s, he started construction of the RV-3. He wanted an airplane that could fly into any reasonable airstrip, have enough power and maneuverability to do basic aerobatics, and be as fast as possible. He flew the RV-3 for the first time in August of 1971. After being inundated with interest, VanGrunsven pursued his lifelong dream, starting Vans Aircraft, Inc. in 1973. From his small workshop, he developed and produced RV-3 kits almost single-handedly. With the market success of the RV-4, the RV-6/6A, the RV-7/7A, the RV-8/8A, and the RV-9/9A, Vans Aircraft, Inc. continues to build towards the future. Over the years, and several expansions, the company eventually moved to its current location on the Aurora, Oregon airport. By 2005, over 4000 RV kits, averaging ...

Flying in an RV8
Steve took us up in his homemade RV8 for some air stunts. A little worried at first, mainly about taking to air in a homemade plane but that all went away when my younger cousin jumped in fearless for some barrel rolls! When it was my turn, Steve started me off with a few Avians, then a 3X Gravity loop, a Barrel Roll, a Split S, a Lazy Eight, a quick pass over the lake and finished with a run way touch and go without the touch. Unfortunately, I had to hold on with both hands and couldn't film anything but the Avions and the last part of a Barrel Roll. Got to fly a bit and do a few waves which was also a thrill! Can't wait to do it again!

GONJASUFI & THE GASLAMP KILLER EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
twitter.com / www.socialstereotype.com For the music issue of Dazed I hit the road with psyche hop wizard Gonjasufi, travelling from LA to his home in Las Vegas. Along the way we hooked up with his long-term producer and global purveyor of cosmic bass, The Gaslamp Killer for an afternoon of machetes, possum hats, hash cookies and heady vibes. In this exclusive film for Dazed Digital, the duo discuss on camera for the first time ever what inspired A Sufi & A Killer, their hallucinogenic debut album, and we also show what happened behind the scenes of Luke Gilford's shoot for the magazine.
