Popcorn is a 1991 American horror film, directed by Mark Herrier and written by Alan Ormsby.

Plot[link]

A group of film students plan an all-night horror film festival in order to raise funds for their cinema club. They decide to show a number of (fictional) horror films from the 1950s that rely on gimmicks such as 3-D, Odorama, and electrical "buzzers" in seats. Unbeknownst to the group, a homicidal maniac is stalking the theater where the festival is being held. A filmmaker named Lanyard Gates, who murdered his family during a screening of his only film in the 1970s, supplies the decoy killer character, since young Maggie (Jill Schoelen) may or may not be his missing daughter.

Production[link]

Popcorn was filmed entirely in Kingston, Jamaica. Alan Ormsby was originally the film's director but was replaced by Porky's actor Mark Herrier a few weeks into filming. The original lead Amy O'Neill was replaced by Jill Schoelen at this time as well.

Home media release[link]

Elite Entertainment released a DVD edition of Popcorn in 2001. Special features include theatrical trailers, TV spots and promotional footage. The DVD has now been discontinued and as of January 4, 2010.

February 7th, 2011, www.popcorndoc.com has confirmed a re-release of Popcorn is in the works. It will include a retrospective documentary, cast commentary, collector's booklet and collectible poster with new artwork from Jeff Zornow. The DVD is set to be released in 2012.^[1]

Jill Schoelen (born March 21, 1963) is an American actress.

Early life[link]

Schoelen was born in Burbank, California. Her mother is the famous fashion designer Dorothy Schoelen.

Acting career[link]

Schoelen's debut was in a TV film called "Best of Times" which also starred Crispin Glover and Nicolas Cage. Schoelen has also starred in such movies as D.C. Cab (1983), Babes in Toyland (1986), The Stepfather (1987), Curse II: The Bite (1988), Cutting Class (1989), The Phantom of the Opera (1989), Rich Girl (film) (1991), Popcorn (1991), When a Stranger Calls Back (1993), There Goes My Baby (1994), and "State of Mind" costarring Fred Williamson. Schoelen's last major role was in a rarely seen 1996 independent film called "Not Again!". Her role as the heroine in no less than six low-budget horror films earned her a minor cult following and reputation as a scream queen.^[1] She also guest starred in the hit TV show Murder, She Wrote, "Little House on the Prairie (TV series)" in an episode entitled "Love" where she played a blind girl, Diagnosis: Murder in an episode entitled "Shaker", and Hell Town (TV series) which starred Robert Blake and lasted only one season. In the latter, she appeared in an episode entitled "The People vs. Willy the Goat."

Schoelen briefly dated Brad Pitt.

Jill took time off from the spotlight to raise her two children with her husband, composer Anthony Marinelli, in Encino, California. The two were divorced in 2002. In 2003, Jill began a relationship with jazz bassist Dave Carpenter, who has played with Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Boz Scaggs, and many others. Jill and Dave began working on a jazz album, with Jill providing the vocals and Dave playing bass as well as producing.

Jill is currently working on a new CD recording songs she believes will be part of the American Songbook, and has actively produced a play called The Standard Bearer and has co-produced Baby, it's You for Broadway with director Floyd Mutrux, both as of 2011.^[2]

Orville Clarence Redenbacher (July 16, 1907 – September 19, 1995) was an American businessman most often associated with the brand of popcorn that bears his name.

Early life[link]

Redenbacher was born in Brazil, Indiana, and grew up on his family's farm where he sometimes sold popcorn in town from a roadside stand. He graduated from Brazil High School in 1921 and was in the top 5% of his class. He attended Purdue University, joining the agriculture-oriented Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and the Purdue All-American Marching Band. He graduated with a degree in agronomy in 1928.^[1] He spent most of his life in the agriculture industry, serving as a Vigo County Farm Bureau extension agent in Terre Haute, Indiana, and at Princeton Farms in Princeton, Indiana.

Business career[link]

He earned a small fortune in fertilizer, but in his spare time, he indulged in his obsession. In 1951, he and partner Charlie Bowman bought the George F. Chester and Son seed corn plant near Valparaiso, Indiana. Naming the company "Chester Hybrids," they tried tens of thousands of hybrid strains of popcorn before achieving success. Redenbacher and Bowman initially named the hybrid "RedBow," but were advised by an advertising agency to use the name Orville Redenbacher to market the corn. They adopted the advice, launching their popping corn in 1970,^[2] and Orville was suddenly everywhere. Redenbacher could be first seen on national television in 1973, long before his well-known commercial appearances as himself promoting his kernels. In an episode of the game show, To Tell the Truth, he stumped the panelists (Kitty Carlisle Hart, Bill Cullen, Joe Garagiola, and Peggy Cass), all of who were shown enjoying samples of Redenbacher's then-new novelty popping corn flavors including chili and curry.^[3] Orville stayed original and stuck to the basic crayon colors of red, white, black, and yellow for his label so it would have a clean classy look.

By the mid 1970s, Redenbacher and Bowman had captured a third of the market for unpopped popcorn.^[2] In 1976, Redenbacher sold the company to Hunt-Wesson Foods, which was a division of Norton Simon, Inc. In 1983, Esmark purchased Norton Simon, and the next year (1984), Beatrice Foods acquired Esmark. In 1985, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts acquired Beatrice with the goal of selling off businesses. The popcorn business and other old Hunt-Wesson businesses were sold in 1990 to agribusiness giant ConAgra. Redenbacher then moved to Coronado, California. He followed in the footsteps of KFC founder Harlan Sanders by serving as the company's official spokesman, which (just like Sanders) involved wearing a trademark outfit in public, in his case horn-rimmed glasses and a bowtie. Sometime Redenbacher appeared in commercials with his grandson. His wholesome image and folksy name confused many consumers, some even writing the company to ask if Redenbacher was a real person, and not an actor (see, e.g., Bartles & Jaymes). He responded to this by appearing on various talk shows, professing his identity.

After the initial sale to Hunt-Wesson, the city of Valparaiso, Indiana, started their first Popcorn Festival in 1979. Celebrating Redenbacher’s development of his popcorn in Valparaiso, the festival featured Orville and Gary appearing several times as grand marshal of the signature event, the Popcorn Parade. Purdue University granted him an honorary doctorate degree in the College of Agriculture in 1988.

Redenbacher hosted the SFM Holiday Network syndicated movie broadcast package along with his grandson.

Death and legacy[link]

On September 19, 1995 Redenbacher was found dead in the Jacuzzi of his condominium in Coronado, California. He had suffered a heart attack and drowned. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered at sea.

His brand of popcorn continues to be among the most popular in the United States.

2005 marked the 40th anniversary of Orville Redenbacher's, still the #1 selling brand in the United States. To celebrate the man behind the popping corn, ConAgra developed a special website that highlights some of the classic Orville Redenbacher television commercials. One of his most famous and recognizable commercials states, "My gourmet popping corn pops up lighter and fluffier than ordinary popping corn. Mine is blowing the top right off of the popper. Mine eats better too. Try my gourmet popping corn. You'll taste the difference or my name isn't Orville Redenbacher".

Since 2006, several of Orville’s commercials from the 1970s and 1980s have aired on many channels across the country during commercial breaks. The advertisements for the brand’s "natural" popcorn snacks were introduced in 2008, 13 years after Redenbacher's death, and feature a clip of him at the end.

In January 2007, an advertisement featuring a digital re-creation of Redenbacher appeared on television. Redenbacher's grandson, Gary Redenbacher, responded to questions about how he felt about the advertisement by saying: "Grandpa would go for it. He was a cutting-edge guy. This was a way to honor his legacy." ^[4]
