Bertrand Tavernier on the making of Death Watch
Bertrand Tavernier on the making of Death Watch
In this interview recorded at the 2012 Glasgow Film Festival, director Bertrand Tavernier discusses his 1980 film, Death Watch, which premiered in its digitally restored version at the Festival and receives a UK cinema re-release in June 2012. In Death Watch, Roddy (Harvey Keitel) has a camera implanted in his brain. He's been hired by a television producer to film a documentary of terminally ill Katherine (Romy Schneider), without her knowledge. His footage will then be run on the popular TV series, Death Watch. Filmed extensively in the streets of Glasgow while it was undergoing massive renovation, the film co-stars Harry Dean Stanton and Max Von Sydow. In the interview Tavernier explains some of the film's themes and why he's not so happy that Death Watch predicted the coming of reality television so accurately. www.reelscotland.com
