New veto by Russia and China to stop UN Security Council resolution against Syria. It was the third time in nine months that Russia and China used their powers as permanent members of the 15-nation council to block resolutions on Syria. There were 11 votes in favor of the resolution. Russia and China voted against it, while South Africa and Pakistan abstained from voting. Addressing the council, Russian Representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin accused the Western members of the UNSC of attempting to "fan the flames of confrontation in the Security Council." "The draft resolution which was voted on was biased. The threat of sanctions was leveled exclusively at the government of Syria, and does not reflect the realities in the country today. It's especially ambiguous in light of what happened with the grave terrorist attack that took place in Damascus", Churkin added. British Foreign Secretary William Hague, who drafted the resolution, earlier said the worsening crisis confirmed "the urgent need for a Chapter 7 resolution of the UN Security ...

HEAVY rainstorm in China cause FLOOD: Dozen KILLED and MILLIONS need to EVACUATED GUIYANG, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms in Guizhou Province since Wednesday have left at least 11 people dead and damaged homes of 980000 residents, the provincial civil affairs bureau said Saturday. The bureau said that most of the deaths were caused by mountain torrents, landslides and avalanches triggered by the rainstorms. The bureau said local authorities are carrying out rescue work and handing out disaster relief goods, including providing quilts, rice and oil to the homeless. The provincial observatory said more heavy downpours were likely to hit parts of Guizhou from Saturday to Monday. Local governments are evacuating hundreds of residents away from areas prone to geological disasters. Meanwhile, rainstorms have also wreaked havoc in east China's Anhui Province and the central province of Hunan. Torrential downpours hit mid and southern parts of Anhui from Friday, triggering landslides in some area. The Anhui provincial fire department said Saturday a part of the urban area of Anqing City was flooded on Friday. Firefighters and police had to use life rafts to rescue over 600 stranded residents. A 20-month-old child died and her parents were injured on Saturday morning in Shaling Village, Wuhe Township in Yuexi County, because of a rain-triggered landslide, the local government said. The mass shooting took place during the midnight screening of the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado, about 16 kilometres outside of Denver. Police said at about 12:30 am the lone gunman released some sort of gas in the theatre before firing into the crowd. 12 people were killed and 59 wounded. Shortly after the shooting, police arrested 24-year-old James Holmes outside the theatre. He did not resist arrest, police said.
