Allison C. Brooks (1917-9 December 2006) was a United States Air Force aviator who piloted both the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and North American P-51 Mustang aircraft in combat missions over Nazi Germany during World War II. In the Vietnam War, he flew Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft in combat support missions. In addition to earning numerous military decorations, he was ultimately promoted to the rank of major general and served in active duty until 1971.

Operation Crossroads
Operation Crossroads was a series of nuclear weapon tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll in the summer of 1946. Its purpose was to investigate the effect of nuclear weapons on naval ships. The series consisted of two detonations, each with a yield of 23 kilotons: Able was detonated at an altitude of 520 feet (158 m) on July 1, 1946; Baker was detonated 90 feet (27 m) underwater on July 25, 1946. This video documents the experience of flying in the B-17 Flying Fortress bomber, Liberty Belle. The plane took off from Chester County Airport in Coatesville, Pennsylvania and landed at Albany International Airport in New York. Three years after this flight on June 13, 2011 the plane crashed after takeoff from Aurora airport near Chicago. Seven crew members and volunteers escaped without serious injury. Liberty Belle B-17 Emergency Landing Fire
The airplane is the B-17 Flying Fortress known as the "Liberty Belle." All seven people on board reportedly escaped and survived this event, without injury, but the aircraft appears to be a total loss. It made an emergency landing and burned in a cornfield at about 10 am, Monday morning, June 13, near Aurora Municipal Airport outside Chicago. The B-17 had departed from Aurora and soon after the pilot reported a fire on board. Several residents said they saw the plane flying low trailing smoke and flames prior to the emergency landing. The field was about five miles away from the airport. The "Liberty Belle" was once owned by the New England Air Museum in Connecticut. The Liberty Foundation of Florida acquired the aircraft in 1992and the aircraft had been flying since 2004. The B-17 was at Aurora to participate in a Salute to Veterans over the weekend.

The story of the B-17 Flying Fortress "Memphis Belle" and her crew. Background information from en.wikipedia.org Memphis Belle was the nickname of a Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress during the Second World War that inspired the making of two motion pictures: a 1944 documentary film, Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress, and a 1990 Hollywood feature film, Memphis Belle. She was the first United States Army Air Forces heavy bomber to complete 25 combat missions with her crew intact. The aircraft and crew then returned to the United States to sell war bonds. The aircraft is undergoing extensive restoration at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio.
Great Planes: Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress - Documentary
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft developed in the 1930s for the then-United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and more than met the Air Corps' expectations. Although Boeing lost the contract because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps was so impressed with Boeing's design that they ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances. The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force based at Thorpe Abbotts airfield in England and the Fifteenth Air Force based in Italy complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in Operation Pointblank to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for Operation Overlord.[4] The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the War in the Pacific where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields. From its pre-war inception, the USAAC (later USAAF) touted the aircraft as a strategic weapon; it was a potent, high-flying, long-range bomber that was able to defend itself, and to return home despite extensive battle damage. B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" FLIGHT from Napa on 5/8/2007

Members of the national organization Experimental Aircraft Association [EAA] have reconditioned this B-17 Flying Fortress that tours North America every year out of Oshkosh, WI ...here visiting in Napa on May 8th and 9th 2007 from the Napa County Airport, California, USA. The challenge during take-off [due to strict SAFETY Standards] was to achieve proper camera angle out the cockpit and side windows from a seated position facing backwards towards the tail of the aircraft below the flight deck. It was kinda like shootin' from the hip facing the wrong direction with fairly good accuracy. My hope is this inspires ALL to support and contribute to such a valiant, honorable representation of our love and support we all share for every veteran, both young and old, with us and deceased, for their sacrafice in their fight for our freedom and liberty that many times seems taken for granted.
