'Rig 20' 1977 film. Beaufort Sea.
Old film from 1977 (or 76). We shot on an oil rig in the Beaufort Sea out in the Arctic Ocean, Northern Canada. It's sort of 'a day on an oil rig' at 50+ below zero. Man it was cold. Our good friend Bob Riddell was the Cinematographer...1944-2012, RIP Bobby... The tape was rescued by Garrell Clark from an old box but it has a bad crease all the way through. Sorry...

Cam Neufeld - Beaufort Sea Boogie
Notes from the artist: "I wrote this after a somewhat-strange trip to Tuktoyaktuk as Santa Claus's fiddle player ... I would go running on the Beaufort sea at -40 in the dark. Since it was December and was warned about polar bears, which I didn't see since it was dark but it may have sped me up a little ... it was interesting not having any daylight hrs ... there were all night square dance parties starting at 3 in the morning and round the clock activity." Recorded as part of Cam's application for WOMEX 12. Shot with the Panasonic DMC-GH1 with firmware modified with Tester 13's "Ptool" and the Panasonic 14-140mm lens along with a Panasonic DMC-GH2 with stock firmware and a Leica 90mm Pre-ASPH Summicron-M mounted to the body with an adapter. Audio recorded to a Tascam DR-40 using the two internal microphones plus a Studio Projects T3 microphone. Synced, audio layered, and cut in Adobe Premier CS5 on a PC running Windows Vista 64bit and rendered faster than realtime on an nVidia GTX 275.

Gravity Coring Opps on USCGC Healy in Southern Beaufort Sea
Conducting gravity coring operations aboard the USCGC Healy in the Southern Beaufort Sea during the 2010 International Extended Continental Shelf Survey. This is a simple way to retrieve soft sediment cores- the coring pipe is driven into the sea bed by the 2-ton weight at the top of the coring device. Filmed by PolarTREC teacher Bill Schmoker

Vigil for the Arctic-Seattle-June 9-10-2012.wmv
Vigil held at the Seattle Waterfront to mourn the imminent departure of Shell's two Arctic oil rigs currently in Seattle, the Kulluk (headed for the Beaufort Sea) and the Noble Discoverer (headed for the Chukchi Sea). The Beaufort and Chukchi seas have been called the "nursery of the planet" for whales, seabirds, polar bears, and many other species. And the fact that Shell has been given permission by the government to be the first to begin drilling for oil in these pristine and fragile seas in the Arctic is a catastrophe waiting to happen, as there is no proven method for cleaning oil spilled on ice. And no matter how much Shell reassures us that a spill will not happen, that they have all the safeguards in place, we all know what the reality is. And all this risk of irreparable environmental destruction for what amounts to about 3 year's worth of oil supply for our country.

Polar Bears of Kaktovik
Arctic Alaska, Kingdom of the Ice Bear. During Autumn polar bears congregate along the shore of the Arctic Ocean's Beaufort Sea to gnaw on whale bones and remnants of whale blubber while awaiting formation of sea ice. Images of wildlife photographed by Gina Ruttle aka Whalegeek are available for sale as cards, framed prints, canvas mountings and posters at RedBubble.com through her Whalegeek portfolio www.redbubble.com .
