Deltas
Rivers bring sediment into standing water, eg lakes or the ocean. Deltas form when there is enough sediment that land builds out into the water. Here's a summary. You can also see my lecture notes for deltas at dawnssedstrat.blogspot.com

Vanishing Paradise: Restoring the Mississippi River Delta
The Mississippi River Delta is vanishing before our eyes. The loss of Coastal Louisiana's wetlands affects waterfowl hunters across the country and harms fishing in the Gulf. If we don't act soon, the delta as we know it could be gone forever. There are solutions at hand: we can reconnect the Mississippi River to its delta and breathe new life into this critical ecosystem. This video by LinderMedia looks at the Vanishing Paradise campaign to raise awareness of the need to restore the Delta among hunters and anglers nationwide. Vanishing Paradise is joint project of Ducks Unlimited and the National Wildlife Federation.

12. The Mississipi River Delta, USA
Wehave selected 100 unique places on Earth that are projected to undergo profound changes within the next few generations. We based our selection of the 100 places on the 4th Assessment Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Simply by drawing attention to the beauty of these places, 100 Places to Remember Before they Disappear creates an argument to preserve them. The 100 Places we have chosen to highlight, and the people who live in them, are in serious danger because of rising sea levels, rising temperatures and extreme weather events triggered by climate change. Among ambassadors are Joss Stone, Desmund Tutu for more info visit www.100places.com. The Natural Barricades of Louisiana From its source at Lake Itasca in Minnesota, the Mississippi River flows southwards for more than 3700 km until it reaches Louisiana, where it runs into the Gulf of Mexico. This is the Mississippi River Delta - a humid, subtropical landscape with around 25000 square kilometres of rivers, fresh and saltwater marshes and low-lying barrier islands that provide a habitat for many species of birds, fish, shellfish and small mammals. Some 1.2 million people live in New Orleans on the banks of the Mississippi. On average, the city is half a metre below sea level. The rich delta is of huge commercial importance to New Orleans - the region is ranked second in the United States for fishery production and also provides 16-18% of the nations oil supply. MagicalKenya - Tana River Delta
On the remote shores of Kenya's far Northern coast, the mighty waters of the Tana River meet the sea in a massive River Delta. This isolated region is a truly unique location, where the great inland wilderness of the North meets the beauty of the coast. The Tana delta is a place of spectacular panoramic views, encompassing a scrubland teeming with game and birds and the endless rolling sands of deserted beaches. Here you can experience the best of both worlds, spending the morning exploring a river filled with hippo and crocodile by canoe, and swimming in the blue waters of the Indian Ocean in the afternoon. This is the perfect destination for those looking for a safari with a difference.

Colorado River Delta
The Colorado River helped build the Southwest and it sustains its economy. The river waters crops and fills bath tubs. It runs from the state of Colorado down to the southeast tip of California, and into Mexico. Before the US built massive dams across it, the river roared into Baja and Sonora, Mexico, creating vast wetlands, and flowed out to the Gulf of California. Today, the river rarely even reaches the gulf. But Mexicans hope to restore the river and it's delta--and they're looking to the US for help. KPCC's Ilsa Setziol reports.

Restoring America's Delta
The Mississippi River Delta is sinking at an alarming rate. To make informed decisions about the actions required to fix it we need to understand how the delta was formed, its importance for both wildlife and people, as well as the causes of the precipitous land loss. This video reviews these concepts while guiding us on a visually stunning journey through the under-appreciated Louisiana wetlands.

The Rebirth Of The Danube Delta - Romania
Sep 1997 The grandiose schemes of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu turned the Danube River Delta into a desert-like dust bowl. In the 1980s he decided to transform Europe's richest land into a breadbasket to feed Eastern Europe. Instead, his system of dykes, dams and artificial lakes wreaked massive environmental destruction. By the time of Ceausescu's demise in 1989, 40000 ha of the Delta had been destroyed. With the disappearance of the fish, birds and rare mammals went the traditional lifestyle of the Lipovenes, ethnic Ukrainians who'd fled Russia, and who relied on the wildlife of the Delta - especially the giant sturgeon. Today, weed-filled fields still remain useless for farming, while fish collecting stations and salt mines lie disused. However, the Delta is making a remarkable recovery, thanks to an innovative World Bank Programme. Birds and plants are returning and although the sturgeon haven't recovered, the Lipovenes believe they too now have a future on the Delta. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures
