Telecoms turmoil in France
www.euronews.com France Telecom suffered an 8.1 percent fall in operating profit and sales slipped in the first quarter of the year. It, and the other established French phone companies, are facing stiff competition with the launch of Iliad 's low-cost Free Mobile. The former state-owned monopoly lost 615000 clients between January and March but said the haemorrhaging has slowed. First-quarter revenue was down 1.8 percent to 10.92 billion euros, that compared with a forecast for 10.81 billion. It was helped by a deal to carry Free Mobile's traffic while the new player builds its network. The price war sparked by Free Mobile has changed France from being one of Europe's more profitable markets to one of the toughest. Margins have been forecast to fall to the mid-20s percent - akin to the competitive British market - from the mid-to-high 30s. France Telecom, Vivendi's SFR and Bouygues Telecom are having to spend heavily to retain customers, and two of the three have scaled back dividend pledges. France Telecom itself has cut prices, pushed its low-cost brand Sosh, and offered all-inclusive bundles of mobile, fixed, TV and internet. *Bouygues buys Dartybox* French mobile phone and broadband operator Bouygues is to buy Dartybox paying 40 million euros. That is the telecoms business of household appliances chain Darty which is part of struggling British retailer Kesa. As part of the deal Kesa will continue to get some revenue from existing and future subscribers. *New boss at ...

What Telecom Dividend Will Die Next?
Senior tech analyst Eric Bleeker discusses future prospects for telecom dividends with Chief Technology Officer Jeremy Phillips. Telefonica, the Spanish telecom giant, scrapped its dividend for this year and hopes for it to resume half its payout at the end of 2013. The key reason Telefonica cut its dividend is that it is loaded up with $84 billion in total debt. The debt is a very complicated mix of maturities but includes commercial paper and is generally maturing soon. The plan allows the company to save $12 billion, so its not surprising considering the situation in Europe. The question now is which telecom dividend is next? France Telecom is seeing worse year-over-year revenue declines than Telefonica, but has said it'll retain its beefy dividend -- which yields more than 10% - through 2012, but will reduce it in 2013. The big difference between Telefonica and France Telecom? Telefonica has that $84 billion in debt, while France Telecom has more cash than total debt. That's a huge asset right now and I think considering the conditions it's a much better buy. Turning to the US there's kind of an interesting wrinkle here. Everyone is focused on whether rural landline focused companies like Frontier will continue cutting dividends, a move Bleeker says is likely. However, the interesting thing is that dividend investors have cycled to US wireless companies sending Verizon and AT&T soaring this year, presumably based on the strength of their dividends. Gedda Headz - Spaced Out
One day, I was on set for a corporate shoot, in the east mountains of France. I was busy as a runner can be, carrying heavy equipment, wires, spotlights, all sorts of things, when I got a phonecall. The number was hidden, and a stranger spoke to me with what I thought to be an Indian accent. Danish. He was Danish. I found a mail later this day, from this guy, asking me to come up with my own concept and shoot a music video for him. As most of those random proposals turn out to be dead-ends, I was a bit skeptical at first. But mails followed, and we talked about concepts, team, shooting, and other practicalities. Then I went to the Berlin Film Festival, where I met Keidrych. He sat down in front of me, and ask me: "Do you have a project ? Is there a budget ?". We started talking about it. Weeks later, we were flying to Hong Kong to make this happen. Hong Kong because it's futuristic and intense, like an Asian Neverland. The track has a little Asian feeling to me, the techno beat mixed with the 8-bit-style synthesizers.
Followed a month of preparation, careful plannings, a few arguings, meetings, location scouting, a tad of random castings drunk at 5am in the clubbing street. A week of intense sweating, shouting and shooting. Another month of post-production, grading, etc. And finally, here it is.
I have many thanks to make. First, to Ulrik, for offering me this great project, and for trusting me. Then, to Keidrych, for our teamwork and our passionate discussions about life, Boards of Canada, Thai food and music videos. To Sophia, for her strength and kindness. To Purcy, for sticking to the plan. To Sam, for putting together the best riders of Hong Kong. To Miggy, for making the costumes real, and Irving, who did just the same with the set. To Connie, for her communicative joy. To Yindy, for her "Don't go in that street ! The triads will ransom and kidnap us !" To the whole camera and lighting crew, who made us never worry about anything technical. It just worked. To Anna, Eric and the Free-D Workshop team for having done great VFX in no time. To Christophe and Alexandra, from Tempesta Production, Etienne and Charles, from Digimage, for their generosity. To Tommy, for his amazing photography ( check his http://www.flickr.com/tgkw ), his sense of the decisive moment, and his vibrant colours. To the riders, George, Chun Chai 俊仔, Thai Chai 泰仔, Alex and Billy. Thanks for having made the rollerbladers come back. To all the actors and actresses, for their patience and because they really played the game. To Teresa. Thank you. For you being amazing, for your unique and silent way to talk to the camera. I'm shooting a short film with her, produced by Sophia. It should be finished in a few months.
To Anna, Neha and Yin Kei. Thank you for joining the team.
To my closest friends, Tommy, Samuel, Manu, and my family, for supporting me.
