Aqueduct Cruise Boat Thomas Telford at Trevor and Froncysyllte.
The "TT" operates between Llangollen Wharf and Froncysyllte over the "stream in the sky", the mighty Pontcysyllte aqueduct, making a two-hour cruise in either direction. A bus conveys passengers to or from Fron, depending on the chosen cruise. Refreshments and snacks are available on board, and the scenery is glorious. Also at Llangollen Wharf, but operating upstream where motor boats cannot go, horse drawn boats give a serene journey into a bygone age. Thomas Telford "Colossus of Roads" 1757 - 1834 and Engineering a Sustainable Scotland
13 October 2010, 7.00pm at The Buccleuch Centre, Langholm Thomas Telford "Colossus of Roads" 1757 - 1834 and Engineering a Sustainable Scotland Professor Roland Paxton FRSE, Department of the Built Environment, Heriot-Watt University/ Brian Veitch, Director, Arup Telford's achievements in early 19th century engineering earned him the accolades from Robert Southey, the Poet Laureate at the time, of 'Colossus of Roads' and 'Pontifex Maximus'. In addition to his engineering accomplishments Telford was renowned for his outstanding promotion of the importance of knowledge and education. This presentation will detail Telford's life from his humble origins in Eskdale to becoming the greatest civil engineer of his era. Emphasis will be placed on the Scottish context where Telford directed the creation of more than 1000 bridges, 1200 miles of road, many harbours and the Caledonian Canal. Scotland faces a challenging future. Economic, climatic and social issues, coupled with depletion of resources, will drive change. How will Scotland respond and adapt? Brian Veitch, from the global consultancy practice Arup, will discuss how we can move to a sustainable future by employing our strengths in engineering, science and technology to harness and benefit from these drivers of change -- and by building on the legacy of Telford and his contemporaries.

Thomas Telford's Shropshire
Thomas Telford's Shropshire
This great Scottish engineer developed many of his impressive skills in Shropshire. The video shows the wide range of his work in the county and over its borders. Telford first arrived 1787 to renovate Shrewsbury Castle, and remained as County Surveyor and private architect. Stone mason by trade, he moved construction technology forward forward with his use of iron. He became a master of road and bridge building and canal engineering - the acclaimed 'Father of civil Engineering'. To follow Telford's trail of work through Shropshire is to move through the Age of 18th and 19th Century Transport.

Narrowboats "Thomas Telford" and "Sally" crossing Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, 30.10.09. High angle view.
Another attempt with the pole-mounted Nikon D90. Cruise boat "Thomas Telford" from Llangollen crosses with Aubrey at the helm and Helen and Phil as cabin crew, followed by Peter and Bev on "Sally". The towpath here is about 90 feet above the fields, increasing to nearly 127 feet over the bed of the river Dee. This view shows just why they call it "The Stream in the Sky", and it probably gives the best impression of the approach embankment from Fron, one of the biggest earthworks in Britain before the motorways were built. Charlie the dog just had to get in on the act, and a young lady in a spectacularly colourful hat illuminates the opening seconds! The noise is from tree trimming and shredding along the riverbank. Please excuse the dive into the towpath at the end; my improvised remote switch didn't work, and Windows Movie Maker is still on the blink! The "TT" operates daily between Llangollen Wharf (tel. 01978 860702) and Froncysyllte from the start of the Easter holidays to the end of October or, as this year, the first day of November. She cruises through over five miles of glorious scenery, making one two-hour trip each way with a bus connection included for the outward or homeward journey, whichever you choose to take. A commentary and friendly buffet service are provided. There are a few seasonal-themed "mince pie" cruises in December, too. Also from the Wharf, during the summer season horse drawn boats operate upstream, where power boats cannot go. See other clips ...
