Nandita Morarji better known as Nagma (born 25 December 1974). At her peak in the 1990s, ''The Hindu'' stated that she "dominated Tamil and Telugu cinema" with her movies ''Killer'', ''Gharana Mogudu'', ''Kadhalan'', ''Baashha'' and many others. Born of a Muslim mother and a Hindu father, and on Christmas she began her acting career in Bollywood and acted in a few of the biggest Bollywood movies but shifted down south before returning to Mumbai and continuing films in other languages. She should not to be confused with an item girl who went by the same stage name, because of her craze for the real Nagma, The duplicates real name is Mumtaz Khan (that mistake is made in her listing on the Internet Movie Database website). Nagma has acted in a broad range of India's languages: Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, and now Marathi.

Life, Family and Other Pursuits (1970 to Present)

Nagma's biological father was Sri Arvind Pratapsinh Morarji who's forefathers hailed from a royal background from Jaisalmer later migrating to Gujrat,Porbandar then Mumbai, Her great grandfather Sri Gokuldas Morarji was a reputed business man in the shipping, textile, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries. They were renowned for their philanthropy, charity, generosity and made many prominent educational institutions and Dharamshalas (relegious resthouses) which still exist in places such as Pune and also hospitals. Her mother hailed from the Konkan region of Maharastra belonging to the Kazi freedom fighter family, Who's original name was Shama Kazi now better known as Seema, who married Morarji in 1969 in CCI Club in Mumbai, but separated in 1973. According to Nagma's passport, the name given to her at birth was Nandita Arvind Morarji, which has now been updated to Nagma Arvind Morarji. In her father's obituary printed by the family when her father died she is referred by her original name (Nandita). After divorcing Morarji due to some family problems on August 1973, Nagma's mother married Chander Sadanah, a film producer in March 1975, with whom she had three children: 2 daughters Radhika (settled in the USA) and Jyothika ( a Tamil Cinema actress who married to Surya a top Tamil actor and is currently settled with two kids in Chennai),and a son named Suraj (who works as a associate director with many big directors of Bollywood such as Priyadarshan, Madhur Bhandarkar, Sanjay Leela Bansali, Sajid Khan an is currently workng with Ayaan Mukherji for Dharma Productions and producer Karan Johar). Through her biological father, who had re-married earlier, Nagma has two half-brothers, Dhanraj and Yuvraj.

Nagma remained close to her biological father until his death on 31 December 2005. She explained to a Mumbai reporter that "I am proud of the fact that I belong to the respectable family. My mother was legally married to my father the late Shri Arvind Morarji at a public function at the CCI Club, Mumbai." It was Nagma's mother who encouraged her to become an actress and is said to have been her "constant companion on the film sets" for several years.

Inspired by her entrepreneurial background Nagma forayed into the clothing business by opening a boutique in Mumbai in Bandra West on Hill Road called Nagma's, which was inaugurated in September 2000 by Akshay Kumar. Although the boutique was highly successful and an instant hit. She had to shut it down in 2003 as she had to leave everything behind to be by the side of her ailing father while simultaneously honoring her bhojpuri and other language film commitments apart from her spiritual quest, then teaching Art Of Living. Since she belongs from a her maternal side to a freedom fighters family who owed their loyalty towards their nation who were Congressmen. She idolizes Mrs. Indra Gandhi, was impressed by Rajiv Gandhi and highly inspired by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. She officially joined the Congress Political Party from the year 2003-04 as an official Star Campaigner, promoting the party, and propagating its agenda nationwide, She later went on to become an AICC (All India Congress Committee) Member from Maharashtra and remains so till date.

Acting career

Nagma's debut film ''Baaghi: A Rebel for Love'' was Hindi cinema's seventh highest grossing film in 1990. With Karisma Kapoor, she was also one of the female leads in 1994's ''Suhaag'' with Ajay Devgan and Akshay Kumar'. Following these films, she moved south to star in Telugu and Tamil movies at the behest of her friend Divya Bharti. Explaining her shift, she cited what she was more conscious of the quality of work, in terms of meaty roles and her flair to travel throughout India understanding different cultures and her drive and passion to get acclamation from all over India. She stated "Language was never a barrier I love adventure, culture and have great respect for the Indian tradition", A girl with a Muslim name and a Hindu father and born on Christmas a perfect example of national integration, did what was best for her then. She became a major star in the south and remained so. Although she started of with a bang in Bollywood (Hindi cinema) with topmost banners, actors and directors. The main reason for her shift could have been that her personal family life was getting affected by the yellow journalism and stories.

Her Telugu films include 1993's ''Gharana Mogudu'' with Chiranjeevi, ''Allari Alludu'' with Nagarjuna Akkineni and ''Major Chandrakanth'' with NTR and Mohan Babu. Her Tamil films include ''Baasha'' with Rajnikanth and 1994's ''Kadhalan'' with Prabhu Deva. In 1996,she became known for acting in a food play scene in the Tamil film ''Love Birds'' which involves the male protagonist breaking an egg and cooking it on her navel which was similar to the food play scene from ''Hot Shots'' involving Valeria Golino.

After moving back to Mumbai, she told an interviewer in 2001, "The pressure of being the number one actress in Tamil cinema was getting to me. I was unhappy with the kind of films I was doing. I couldn't do the kind of work I wanted to because I had to go by the dictates of what the audience expected of a much-in-demand actress. I was stagnating so I decided to take a break." Again based in Hindi cinema, she focused on supporting roles in films like 2000's ''Chal Mere Bhai'', which reunited her with former co-stars Karisma Kapoor, Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt. Within a year, Nagma enrolled in the spiritually oriented Art of Living course, eventually teaching it herself in Mumbai and elsewhere. While based in Mumbai, she continued to work in some Telugu and Tamil movies, such as ''Allari Ramudu'' and ''Citizen'', as well as taking leading roles in some Malayalam films.

Nagma was "a prominent campaigner for the Congress party...on the election trail for the party in Bihar and Jharkhand." She is quoted on the front page of ''The Telegraph'' as asking "Why were the reports made public when I have just returned from successful political campaigning in Jharkhand?"

Nagma has acted in Bhojpuri movies, including films with the "Big Boss" participant Ravi Kishan, with whom she was linked romantically. She won a Best Actress award at the 2005 Bhojpuri Film Awards for her performance in ''Dulha Milal Dildar''. In 2006's ''Ganga'', she starred in the title role opposite Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini. When asked why she shifted to Bhojpuri films, she said "I wanted to do films in different languages. I have already done movies in 10 languages. My first Bhojpuri film 'Panditji Bataayina Biyaah Kab Hoii' was a huge hit. After that the offers poured in and they were too good to be ignored." When interviewed by ''The Hindu'' in Delhi in April 2007, she indicated that another important reason for her decision to focus on Bhojpuri films was to help with her political campaigning.

In 2006, she made her Punjabi film debut, starring alongside Raj Babbar in ''Ek Jind Ek Jaan''.

Discussing her career in a ''Mid-Day'' interview in September 2006, Nagma said "I have learnt nine languages, so I want to do films in all languages. On the Hindi film front, I am in the process of signing a very big period thriller. I am getting to do a variety of roles with content, so I am satisfied." While noting her commitment to complete several Bhojpuri films she was involved with, in March 2007, she expressed her intention to next focus on returning to Hindi films after wrapping up her projects. In her 2007 ''Hindustan Times'' interview, in which she discusses her future plans for cinema and politics, Nagma responded to a question about her reputation for controversy by saying "You need guts to deal with controversies. Of course, whether it’s for negative or positive reasons, I’ve always been in the news."

Politics

A vocal supporter of India's Congress Party, She had only formally become a member of the Congress Party in Delhi, reportedly citing its "commitment towards secularism and welfare of the poor and weaker sections" as her reason for joining. She was also fielded by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as a candidate from Hyderabad for the General Lok Sabha Elections according to an Indo-Asian News Service report Nagma has elsewhere been cited as saying that she first supported the Congress Party because of her admiration for Rajiv Gandhi.

In a 2006 interview, aptly titled "Nagma the Survivor," she made a direct link between her family history and her political activism: "My mom is Muslim and my dad is Hindu. We were brought up to respect all religions. Communal riots pained me. I wanted to do something. So I joined politics.". She had to turn down an offer to run for India's Lok Sabha in 2003 due to her many film commitments. "If I wanted to become a member of Parliament I would need to give 100 per cent to my constituency — which I could not at that point of time." In an interview with the ''Hindustan Times'' in 2007, she said "politics will continue" Interestingly, her last lead role in a major Bollywood film was opposite fellow Congress Party member and then M.P. Govinda. She was in serious contention for his seat in 2009 for the General Lok Sabha Elections which was also highlighted in Star News from Mumbai. She has been continuing her vigorous efforts in AICC and is campaigning in Uttar Pradesh and other parts of India.

Nagma has said that she meditates daily and considers herself to be "a very God-loving person." In line with her family's mixed religious background she has stated that she has read the Qur'an, Bhagavad Gita, and Bible. In 2007 she converted to Christianity.

Khalid bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud ( '''') (February 13, 1913 – June 13, 1982) was King of Saudi Arabia from 1975 to 1982.

King Khalid is the fifth son of King Abdulaziz.

He ruled during Saudi Arabia's oil boom years. In 1979, he had to deal with the Grand Mosque Seizure. As King, he delegated many of his responsibilities to his half-brother Crown Prince Fahd.

Personal life

King Khalid had only one full brother, Muhammad. Their mother was from the important Al Jiluwi clan whose members intermarried with the Al Saud, Jawharah bint Musa’d Bin-Jaluwi. Her death is reported to make King Abdulaziz so sad that he cried.

King Khalid's and also, Muhammed's mother was special for King Abdulaziz due to several reasons. First, Jawharah was King Abdulaziz's cousin. Secondly, she was chosen by King Abdulaziz's mother as a wife for him. And lastly, she died at a young age. Her room in the palace was kept, not allowing anyone to enter except for King Abdulaziz's sister, Nuora.

His first wife was Sita bint Fahd bin Dhamir. They divorced long before the death of Khalid. His sons from his marriage are: Bandar (eldest son), Faisal, Fahd, Saud and Saad. And his daughters are: Hussa, Jawhara, Nuf, Jawhara (II) and Mudhi.

His second wife was Tarfa bint Abdullah bin Abdul Rahman Al-Saud. She was last wife of King Khalid and lived on the side of her husband until his death. His sons from the second marriage are: Abdullah (second son) and Mishal. His daughters are: Nura, Bandari and Mishail

His youngest son Faisal is the governor of Asir Province and a member of the Allegiance Council. His another son Fahd is Assistant Minister of Defence and Inspector General for Military Affairs. His grandson, Khalid bin Saud, is assistant deputy minister of Foreign Affairs.

Uninterested in politics

Khalid was named Crown Prince in 1965 to succeed King Faisal, after Khalid's older full-brother Muhammad bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud declined a place in the succession. Khalid was not very interested in politics and - as King - gave effective control of the country to his half-brother, Crown Prince Fahd.

One of the speculations about his selection as crown prince was that his lack of predilection for politics was one of the main reasons underlying his selection. To put it differently, by selecting King Khaled the Saudi family could create a semblance of internal (i.e., intra-familial) consensus. Yet they selected an individual who, by remaining by and large disinterested in politics, enabled Fahd to be in charge of the family business of running Saudi Arabia.

Upon meeting British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Khalid is reputed to have said he would be happy to discuss falcons with her, but for all matters of administration she should talk to Crown Prince Fahd.

Crown Prince and King

Khalid's preparation for ruling a modern state included his accompanying Faisal on foreign missions and representing Saudi Arabia at the United Nations. He was more liberal in terms of informing the press of the rationale behind foreign policy decisions.

King Khalid's period was of massive development. The industrial cities of Jubayl and Yanbu – now huge complexes – were created.

In April 1975, his first diplomatic coup was the conclusion of a demarcation agreement concerning the Al Buraymi Oasis, where the frontiers of Abu Dhabi, Oman, and Saudi Arabia meet. Claims and counterclaims over this frontier had exacerbated relations among them for years. The conclusion of negotiations under Khalid added to his stature as a statesman.

In a reorganization of the Council of Ministers in 1975, Khalid named Crown Prince Fahd deputy prime minister. In 1976 the strains of office began to tell on Khalid, forcing him to return to the United States for successful open-heart surgery in Cleveland, Ohio. Khalid asked President Carter to sell advanced fighter planes to Saudi Arabia to assist in countering communist aggression in the area. The delivery of the first of sixty F-15s under the agreement approved by Carter arrived in the kingdom in 1982.

He and his crown prince Fahd relied less on technocrats and recentralized state apparatus. They further evidenced a marked preference for Nejdis, reversing King Falsal's close links with Hejazis. Ulema successfully pressed King Khalid to realize their intentions.

He decided to bring in foreign labor to help with the country's development. A relatively easy-going but pious man. He had purchased a Boeing 747 with an operating room should he be stricken while on his travels.

Some foreign observers thought traditionalism was no longer a strong force in Saudi Arabia. This idea was disproved when at least 500 dissidents invaded and seized the Grand Mosque in Mecca on November 20, 1979.

When the first news of the attack in Mecca reached Riyadh, the initial reaction of King Khalid was to consult the ulama, in order to get permission to use military force to eject the attackers. The ulama hesitated and refrained from a definite answer. Only after the assault had been underway for 36 hours did some ulama allow the use of force.

Following the Grand Mosque Seizure by Islamic militants in 1979, the Saudi government under King Khalid executed the militants, but at the same time granted greater powers to the religious establishment that inspired them.

Jimmy Carter in his memoirs stated that both King Khalid and Crown Prince Fahd assured him of ‘their unequivocal support for Sadat’, but they would realize no concrete move in this direction, at least not publicly.

The strict financial policies of his predecessor, coupled with the aftermath of the 1973 oil crisis, created a financial windfall that fueled development and led to a commercial and economic boom in the country. Notable achievements included the institution of the second "Five-Year Plan" in Saudi history, which aimed to build up Saudi infrastructure and health care. He also called numerous summits and inaugurated the Gulf Co-operation Council in 1981.

His reign is remembered fondly by Saudi citizens for the economic prosperity that began during his time on the throne .

Legacy

King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and King Khalid Military City were both named after him.

Death

The seven-year reign of King Khaled ended on 13 June (1982) with his death due to a heart attack, in Taif.

Sanjay Dutt (born 29 July 1959) is a prominent Indian Hindi film actor, producer and politician. Dutt, son of Hindi film actors Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt, made his acting debut in 1981. He has since featured in films that are amongst some of the most popular Hindi language films of the past three decades.

Personal life

Dutt was born on 29 July 1959 to Bollywood megastars Sunil Dutt and Nargis and was educated at The Lawrence School, Sanawar. Dutt married the actress Richa Sharma in 1987. Sharma died of brain tumour. The couple have a daughter, Trishala, born in 1987, who lives in the United States with her grandparents, following a custody battle with Dutt after the death of his wife. Dutt's second marriage was to model Rhea Pillai in 1998. They divorced in 2005. Dutt married Manyata (also known as Dilnawaz Sheikh) in 2008 at a private ceremony in Goa, after two years of dating. On 21 October 2010, he became a father to twins, a boy named Shahraan and a girl named Iqra.

Film career

As a child actor, Dutt appeared in the 1972 film ''Reshma Aur Shera'', which starred his father; he appears briefly as a qawali singer. Dutt made his Bollywood movie debut with ''Rocky'' in 1981. His mother passed away three days before the film's premiere. He went on to star in ''Vidhaata'', the highest grossing Hindi film of 1982. In 1985 he shot for his first film in three years with ''Jaan ki baazi''; over the rest of the 1980s, Dutt appeared in successful films such as ''Jeeva'', ''Mera Haque'', ''Immandaar'', ''Inaam dus Hazaar'', ''Jeete Hain shaan se'', ''Ilaaka'', ''Hum bhi insaan hain'', ''Mardon wali baat'', ''Kanoon Apna Apna'', and ''Taaqatwar''.

''Naam'' (1986) was Dutt's first critical success, earning praise for his sensitive portrayal of lead character Vicky Kapoor. As the decade went on, he continued to play important roles in popular and critical successes like ''Jodi No.1'', ''Pitaah'', ''Kaante'', ''LOC Kargil'', and the National Award-winning ''Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.'', which also garnered him multiple nominations and several awards. Later successes, and often other acting honors, came in ''Musafir'' ''Plan'', ''Parineeta'', ''Lage Raho Munna Bhai'', ''Dhamaal (2007)'', ''All The Best: Fun Begins (2009)'', ''Double Dhamaal (2011)'' and ''Agneepath''.

In 2007 he received an award from the prime minister Manmohan Singh for his work in the ''Munna bhai'' series.. In 2006 news channel NDTV named him Indian of the Year. In January 2008, film institute Filmfare listed 14 movies featuring Dutt in its top 100 grossing movies of all time list.

Illegal possession of arms

Due to terrorist interactions, and supposed weapons possession, on 19 April 1993, Sanjay was arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA). He spent 16 months in jail until he was granted bail in October 1995 by the Supreme Court of India. He was later re-arrested in December 1995 and re-released in April 1997 once again on police bail terms. In 2006 the case opened for sentencing for all accused (see below). The period between 2006-2007 saw Dutt spend 7 months in Arthur Road Prison and Pune prison on three occasions for arms offences, although in 2006 Dutt was finally acquitted of any TADA-related offenses but was charged under the illegal possession of arms act.

In November 1993, a 90,000-page long primary chargesheet was filed against the 189 accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case including Sanjay.

In March 2006, when framing muthar charges against extradited Abu Salem and co-accused Riyaz Siddiqui in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case, the prosecution said that Salem delivered 9 AK-56 rifles and some hand grenades to Dutt at his Bandra house in the second week of January 1993.

On 13 February 2007, the special branch of Mumbai police arrested Abdul Qayyum Abdul Karim Shaikh, a close aide of Dawood Ibrahim and wanted by Mumbai Police Special Task Force for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts from Mumbai. Qayuum had been named by Sanjay Dutt in his confessional statement. Sanjay had said that he met Qayuum in Dubai in September 1992 and bought a pistol from him. According to CBI, the pistol was sold to Sanjay at the instance of Dawood's brother Anees Ibrahim.

On 31 July 2007, Dutt was sentenced to six years rigorous imprisonment for illegally possessing weapons. At the same time, Dutt was also "cleared of terrorism conspiracy charges in the blasts" related to the 1993 bombings. According to ''The Guardian'', "The actor claimed he feared for his life after the notorious "Black Friday" bombings, which were allegedly staged by Mumbai's Muslim-dominated mafia in retaliation for deadly Hindu-Muslim clashes a few months earlier. But the judge, Pramod Kode, rejected this defence and also refused bail." Dutt was immediately taken into custody and sent to Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail. As the sentence was pronounced, Dutt was "visibly shocked and was seen shivering and holding back tears".

On 2 August 2007, Sanjay Dutt was moved from Arthur Road jail in Mumbai to the Yerwada Central Jail in Pune. On 7 August 2007, Dutt appealed the sentence. On 20 August 2007, the Supreme Court of India granted Dutt interim bail. He was released after Yerwada Central Jail authorities received a copy of the court's bail order. The bail was valid until the time the special TADA court, which sentenced Dutt on 31 July, provides a copy of its judgment to him. Dutt was released from jail on 23 August. On 22 October 2007 Dutt was back in jail but again applied for bail. On 27 November 2007, Dutt was granted bail by the Supreme Court. He currently has an appeal for an acquittal pending. In January 2009, Dutt announced that he would contest the 2009 Lok Sabha elections on the Samajwadi Party ticket. However, he withdrew his candidacy in March 2009 after the Supreme Court refused to suspend his conviction.

International humanitarian initiatives

On 16 December 2008, he was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for IIMSAM — the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition. He will be promoting the use of Spirulina to help the organization's advocacy and endeavor against malnutrition and hunger. His role will also support IIMSAM's efforts to secure the United Nations Millennium Development Goals by mainstreaming the use of Spirulina to eradicate malnutrition, achieve food security and bridge the health divide with a special priority for the developing and the least developed countries.

Prabhu Deva (born 3 April 1973) is an Indian dancer, choreographer, film actor and director. He has performed in a wide range of dancing styles. He has also been labelled as Indian Michael Jackson and holds Michael Jackson as his dance idol.

Early life and career

Prabhu Deva was born in Mysore, Karnataka and grew up in Alwarpet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Prabhu Deva was inspired by his father, Mugur Sundar (known as Sundaram Master), who was a choreographer for popular South Indian movies. Prabhu took dancing as his passion, learning Indian classical dance forms such as Bharatanatyam as well as Western styles. He is widely considered to be one of Indian cinema's greatest dancers and choreographers; Prabhu Deva has revolutionized some of the aspects of dance and choreography in modern popular Indian cinema. His brothers Raju Sundaram and Nagendra Prasad are also established South Indian choreographers.

Prabhu Deva's first movie as a choreographer was Vetri Vizha (1989). Before that, he had appeared as a background dancer for a song in the Tamil film Agni Natchathiram. He has since then choreographed in over 100 movies. From choreography, he went on to establish himself as an actor. His first film as an actor was Indhu (1994) with actress Roja. In 1999, Deva, Shobhana and A. R. Rahman performed with a Tamil cinema dancing troupe at the "Michael Jackson and Friends" concert in Munich, Germany. He has a significant fan following in the Tamil, Telugu and Kannada film industries. He acted alongside his brothers in the movie 123. As of 2010, he serves as chairman and director of the Prabhudeva's Dance Academy in Singapore. He planned to release his first video album called ''It is boring'' (in Tamil ''போருடா'') in 2012. He is acting in lead role in the film ''ABCD (Any Body Can Dance)'', the first 3D dance film in India, co-starring with So You Think You Can Dance contestant Lauren Gottlieb.

Personal life

Prabhu Deva was married to Ramlath for 15 years and had three children; their eldest son (Basavaraju/Vishal) died in 2008 after suffering from cancer. During the making the film ''Villu'' in 2008, reports suggested that he was in a serious relationship with actress Nayantara, with some sources later even claiming that they had married secretly in June 2009. She had tattooed his name on her wrist and began appearing with him in public, while keeping silence neither denying nor confirming the relationship.

In September 2010, Prabhu Deva openly confessed his love for Nayantara and further stated that he would marry her soon. The issue soon gained media attention and turned into a controversy, since Prabhu Deva was not divorced from his wife Ramalath. Unwilling to agree for a divorce, she filed a petition at the family court, seeking directions against her husband and Nayantara from marrying, attending functions together and receiving awards as husband and wife, and requesting a reunion with him. Furthermore, Ramalath threatened to go on hunger strike if Prabhu Deva married Nayantara, while several women's organizations conducted protests against Nayantara for "bringing disrepute to Tamil culture", burning an effigy of her. In 2012, Nayantara confirmed that she had ended her relationship with Prabhu Deva.

He performed with Madhuri Dixit for the song "Ke Sera Sera" in the movie ''Pukar''.

He performed with Apache Indian in the song "No Problem" in the film ''Love Birds''.

He made a special appearance in ''Pokkiri'' (which was directed by himself) with Vijay in the song "Aadungada".

This event was special to Prabhu Deva as the actor shared his 39th birthday on the same day. He foot-tapped to some popular numbers including ''Main aisa kyun hun'' from Lakshya and ''Tera hi jalwa'' from Wanted.

Awards

He is a two-time winner of the National Film Award for Best Choreography for his work on the film ''Minsaara Kanavu'' (1997) in Tamil and ''Lakshya'' (2004) in Hindi, as well as a Filmfare Best Choreography Award (Telugu) for the Telugu film ''Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana'' (2005) and Filmfare Award Best Choreography for film ''Lakshya'' (2004).

In 2001, he was nominated for the Star Screen Award for Best Choreography, for choreographing the dance sequences in the Hindi film ''Pukar'' (2000).

In 2005, he won the Star Screen Award for Best Choreography, the Filmfare Best Choreography Award, and the National Film Award for Best Choreography, for choreographing the dance sequences in the Hindi film ''Lakshya''.

In 2007, he won a Vijay Award for Favourite Director and a Mathrubhumi Award for Best Director in Tamil for the film ''Pokkiri''.

He has been honoured with a life membership at the International Film and Television Research Centre of the Asian Academy of Film & Television by Sandeep Marwah.

Benny Lava

On 18 August 2007, a music video for the song "Kalluri Vaanil" from the Indian-Tamil movie ''Pennin Manathai Thottu'' was uploaded to YouTube by Mike Sutton (Youtube user Buffalax). The video was created as a soramimi, edited to include incorrect English subtitles that phonetically approximate the original Tamil lyrics.

The name Benny Lava comes from Sutton's homophonic translation of the Tamil lead line "''Kalluri vaanil kaayndha nilaavo''?" as "''My loony bun is fine, Benny Lava!''" (original meaning: "The moon (metaphor for 'my love') that scorched the college campus"). This video led other YouTube users to refer to Prabhu Deva as "Benny Lava".

Reactions to the "Kalluri Vaanil" soramimi were mixed. Some felt that the video was done in "good fun" while others worried that their culture was being mocked. The video was described by the Philippine Daily Inquirer as a "Catchy melody, a battalion of back-up dancers, colorful costumes, impressive vocal gymnastics, jaw-dropping choreography this music video has it all. And if those aren't enough, the person who uploaded this vid also provided subtitles so you can sing along. They aren't the real lyrics though, but just what they sound in English, resulting in a lot of nonsense." The music video was featured on ''The Colbert Report'' on 4 December 2008 and appeared on the Heavy Metal documentary ''Global Metal''. As of at least April 1, 2011, the original video has been removed because of the disabling of Buffalax's YouTube account. However, several other users have uploaded copies of the original video on their YouTube accounts.

Rahul Roy Kapoor (born 9 February 1968) is an Indian film actor, who works in Bollywood films. He debuted in the hit Mahesh Bhatt production ''Aashiqui'' (1990) for which he is famous. His popularity increased with the 1992 film ''Sapne Saajan Ke'', in which he was helped by having the music of Nadeem Shravan, with Kumar Sanu's vocals, that he picturised. His most famous hits include "Tu Meri Zindagi Hai", "Ab Tere Bin Jee Lenge Hum" and "Jaane Jigar Jaan-e-Man".

He won the game show Bigg Boss by public vote. Bigg Boss was the Indian version of Celebrity Big Brother, currently being produced by Endemol India for Sony Entertainment Television.

Early life

Roy was born in New Delhi to Vimal Pandey and educated at the Lawrence School, Sanawar.

Acting career

Rahul began his acting career in the 1990 film ''Aashiqui'', a Mahesh Bhatt production as the lead actor with newcomer Anu Agarwal. It was a hit and made him a popular actor.

''Aashiqui'' turned Rahul Roy into an icon for the youth. False rumours of his death in an accident in 1991 meant that schools broke out in certain countries where he had huge fans followings after ''Aashiqui''.

Rahul had to wait for six months after the super hit of ''Aashiqui'' before the films offers started flooding in. He reportedly signed around like 40 films during that spell.

He appeared in Sudhakar Bokade's romantic flick ''Sapne Sajan Ke'' (1992) opposite Karishma Kapoor. The movie earned some good collections at the box office.

He delivered a notable performance in Mahesh Bhatt's autobiography ''Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee'' where Rahul Roy's character was based on the filmmaker. The film was Zee TV's first mainstream movie production and was based on Bhatt's love story with late actress Parveen Babi. The movie had strong performances from the lead pair, Rahul Roy and Pooja Bhatt, and melodious music by Anu Malik.

Rahul Roy featured in Bhatt's production ''Jaanam'', which was Vikram Bhatt's directorial debut. The movie perhaps had one of the best soundtracks (composed by Anu Malik) of 1992.

He worked in several romantic films throughout early 1990s, but the movies did not do well. His performances in ''Majhdhaar'', ''Dilwale Kabhi Na Hare'', ''Pyar Ka Saaya'' were liked, but the films were not good enough.

His biggest movie was considered to be ''Junoon'', in which he turned into a tiger at night. He produced an outstanding performance and was nominated for the Best Actor at the 1992 Filmfare Awards. When ''Junoon'' released, there was mass hysteria in territories like CPCI Rajasthan where the film broke records. It took a flying start at the box office and was an earner.

He was offered the lead role in ''Gumrah'' but, later on, his part was trimmed to a friendly appearance, while Sanjay Dutt's role which originally was a cameo was extended. Rahul Roy had various scenes and a couple of songs chopped from the final cut (including the melodious "Yeh zindagi ka safar" shot in breathtaking locales of Mauritius). Yash Johar, the producer, acknowledging Rahul's initial contribution in the movie thanked the actor for his 'friendly appearance' in the opening credits.

In late 1990s, he appeared as a supporting actor in hit movies because his films as a lead actor flopped. Offers were getting fewer, and films that he had signed after ''Aashiqui'' were getting shelved. A good project like K. Balchander's ''Dilon Ka Rishta'' never saw the light due to the death of producer R.C. Prakash; another important project, ''Ayudh'', was hit by the director's untimely death. Other films like ''Premabhishek'', ''Tune Mera Dil Le Liya'' (with Raveena Tandon), N.R. Pachisia's ''Dil Diya Chori Chori'' (with Karishma Kapoor), Mahesh Bhatt's ''Kalyug'', Harry Baweja's ''Vajra'' (with Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shirodkar), ''Jab Jab Dil Mile'' (with Karishma Kapoor and Naghma) amongst many others were shelved. He was to play the male lead in Mahesh Bhatt's ''Khilona'' which was the Bollywood remake of the Kevin Costner starrer 'Revenge' but the movie was shelved as well.

During the mid-90s Sudhakar Bokade, producer of ''Saajan'' and who had earlier worked with Rahul Roy in ''Sapne Sajan Ke'', decided to produce ''Mera Juta Hai Japani''. Rahul Roy was due to make his directorial debut with the movie. Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff were signed. However, it could not be completed as Bokade could not arrange the money from market to complete it. He also did ''Phir Kabhi'' with director Balwant Dullat. He delivered a fine villainous performance in 'Dharma Karma' which also featured veterans Dharmendra and Jeetendra.

Rahul Roy didn't act in films for several years. He returned to acting after four years in ''Meri Aashiqui'' (2005), in which he was the lead. His most recent films were the comedy ''Naughty Boy'' (2006) and Rafta Rafta in which he played the role of an underworld don with great conviction. He also appeared on the television program ''Bigg Boss'', the Indian version of ''Celebrity Big Brother'' in 2006. He won the game show by public votes on 26 January 2007.

Rahul Roy has ventured into movie production. His banner, Rahul Roy Productions, released its first movie titled Elaan on the 25th November 2011 in Bihar. The film starred Rahul and Rituparna Sen as the main leads.

Personal life

Roy is married to Rajalaxmi, a fashion model.

He has been honoured with a life membership of International Film And Television Club of Asian Academy Of Film & Television.
