Metonymy or The Husband's Revenge a silent film production
This video was created by the lovely ladies in the back corner for our lit class in 2008. It was based on the short story by the Brazilian author Rachel de Queiroz. We only acted out the story telling part of the story so here is the introduction which will bring everything together: Metonymy. I learned the word in 1930 and shall never forget it. I had just published my first novel. A literary critic had scolded me because my hero went out into the night chest unbuttoned. What deplorable nonsense! wrote this eminently sensible gentleman, Why does she not say what she means? Obviously, it was his shirt that was unbuttoned, not his chest. I accepted his rebuke with humility, indeed with shame. But my illustrious Latin professor, Dr. Matos Peixoto came to my rescue. He said that what I had written was perfectly correct; that I had used a respectable figure of speech know as metonymy; and that this figure consisted in the use of one word for another word associated with it—for example, a word representing a cause instead of the effect, or representing the container when the content is intended. The classic instance, he told me, is the sparkling cup; in reality, not the cup but the wine in it is sparkling. The professor and I wrote a letter, which was published in the newspaper where the review had appeared. It put my unjust critic in his place. I hope he learned a lesson. I know I did. Ever since, I have been using metonymy—my only bond with classical rhetoric. Moreover, I ...

Evolutionary Poetics - Metonymy
This is something of a follow-up to my last video on evolutionary aethetics, basically picking up on the ideas that not only aesthetics (the attractiveness of things) may be open to an explanation in terms of adaptive success, but also poetics, which I am choosing to understand as the transformation of the raw data of the world into the stuff of experience. In this video I am speculating about the figure of speech referred to as 'metonymy' in which the part is substituted for the whole. It certainly seems to be the case that this principle is not just in operation within language but also forms a significant part of perception. When I see the front of a tree I do not assume that this tree has no back. Similarly, if I see a dog partially hidden behind a fence I do not think that the dog exists as a series of slices. In both these cases I perceive the whole tree and the entire dog, even though only a part of this whole is visible. It is not entirely surprising that perception works unproblematically in this way; from an evolutionary perspective, it would have been adaptively advantageous for my ancestors to carry out exactly this kind of metonymic perception, assuming that if the head of a predator was visible then the rest of that predator were probably attached.
