Guy Whittingham (born 10 November 1964) is an English former professional footballer and a manager. He was caretaker manager of Football League Two side Portsmouth from November 2012 until April 2013 when he took the role on a permanent basis before being sacked by Portsmouth in November 2013. On the 13th December 2013, he was appointed assistant manager at Crawley Town.
As a player he was a striker from 1988 until 2005, notably in the Premier League for Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday. Having started his career with non-league Yeovil Town he went on to play in the Football League for Portsmouth, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Watford, Peterborough United, Oxford United and Wycombe Wanderers. He amassed over 450 appearances throughout his career.
Born in Evesham, after leaving the British Army, he joined Waterlooville for the start of the 1987-88 season where, after two games for the reserves, he was quickly promoted to the first team and became the club's top goalscorer in the 1987-88 season. One of his goals came in the first round proper of the F.A.Cup against Aylesbury United. He then spent a season at Yeovil Town before, in the summer of 1989, he was signed by Portsmouth, where he then spent the majority of his career, scoring 99 times in 173 league appearances, including Pompey's all-time scoring record of 42 league goals in the 1992–93 season (48 in all competitions) as the club missed out on automatic promotion to the Premier League on goals scored. He was known while at Fratton Park as "Corporal Punishment". Afterwards he played in the Premiership for Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday, proving to be very popular at the Owls. He later returned to Portsmouth in 1999, where his seven goals in nine matches helped the club avoid relegation to the third tier.
Throwback Thursday is a trend among social media sites such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook wherein users post or repost older photographs (often from their childhood) with the hashtag #ThrowbackThursday or #TBT.
Sports Illustrated attributes the origin of the trend to a sneaker-specific blog named Nice Kicks. According to SI, this blog began a weekly practice of posting photos of vintage basketball footwear in 2006, titling the series "Throwback Thursday".
This week's Throwback Thursday Classic Goal - brought to you by the Car Finance Company - is a sweet turn and volley from Guy Whittingham against Middlesbrough. The goal, part of a convincing 4-0 win at Fratton Park for The Blues, also marked Whittingham's fourth goal of the campaign. He would go on to net 13 goals that season, as Pompey would ultimately finish an impressive 9th in Division Two. This week's Throwback Thursday classic goal - sponsored by the World of Cars - is Guy Whittingham's record-breaking strike against Bristol Rovers in 1993. Whittingham broke Billy Hanies' 66-year-old record of 43 goals in a single season for Pompey, with this emphatic effort at thesame time of asking. It may not have been the prettiest of strikes, but it remains one of the most historic Blues goals, as part of a 2-1 away win. In all, 'Corporal Punishment' would amass a haul of 47 goals across all domestic competitions (not including the Anglo-Italian Cup), which will likely never be beaten. For a look back at Whittingham's entire record-breaking season, check out the 'Bygone Blues' feature on him, exclusively on Pompey Player: http://www.player.portsmouthfc.co.uk/archive/?phrase=guy%20w...

Jim Smith's boys could not really have got closer to the Premier League. Just one goal away from an automatic promotion place, they then missed out on Wembley by the same margin, thanks to a controversial off-side goal and the loss of key players. But on the bright side this has been a real season to remember. It has been a season of Guy Whittingham's amazing scoring feats, the skills of Play of the Year Paul Walsh and the triumphant run that took Pompey so close to the very top of the First Division. It might have been a case of So Near yet So Far, but with all the highlights from a truly memorable First Division campaign and over 80 Pompey goals to celebrate there are plenty of reasons to be proud of the men from Portsmouth. This video is a precious record of a very special season and...

A VHS video I have found from the 1998 -1999 season. Looks like I made my own seasons review. Portsmouth's centenary season, 1998-99, saw a serious financial crisis hit the club and in December 1998, chairman Martin Gregory quit his post after being targeted of abuse from Portsmouth fans which gave him no choice but to sell his 97% ownership of the club and in February 1999, Portsmouth went into receivership.[2] They avoided relegation again that season, and were then saved from closure by new chairman Milan Mandarić, who saved the club with a takeover deal in May 1999.
