The Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union (1/8)
The Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union (1/8)
This documentary tells the story of the Winter War, the Soviet Union's invasion of Finland in November, 1939. The Soviets were convinced they could win the war in a matter of days. No one expected that tiny Finland could resist the highly mechanized Red Army, the largest military force in the world. And no one anticipated that 1939 would be one of the coldest winters in recorded history. During 105 days of intensely bloody and brutal combat, Finland improvised a devastating and deadly defense, for an environment historians have called a frozen hell. The Winter War changed the course of what would soon become World War II.

Talvisota- The Winter War ([Rare video] Friends of Finland)
In 1939 American sympathy for Finland. In spite of the great publicity, Finland received little effective military help. The Swedish unit with Norwegians thrown in was the only significant foreign unit to see action. The volunteer movement made greater impact on psychological front: the Finnish people felt that they had not been totally abandoned although the sympathy without action generated some sombre comments among Finns. The fact that little effective military help managed to reach Finland was in turn proof that the Western democracies could not give any guarantees for Finland's freedom. This was even more evident when soon after the Winter War Germany occupied Denmark and Norway thus effectively cutting any routes from Finland to the West. This in turn was one factor in forcing Finland to accept German help against the Soviet threat. ___________________________________________ The WAR between small Christian Finland and Godless Soviet Union!

Finnish defence forces news Puolustusvoimain uutiskatsaus. Raatteentiellä Suomussalmella Suomalaiset Sotajoukot saivat loistavan voiton. Background During the battle of Suomussalmi, the Finns cut the Raate road on 11 December 1939. The action prevented the second, southern supply route to the Soviet 163rd Division in the town of Suomussalmi. The Finns also cut the first, northern supply route on 13 December, and the Soviets were forced to open new supply route through Lake Kiantajärvi. The 163rd Division was nearly surrounded and suffered major casualties in Suomussalmi. The situation was getting worse, and on 20 December the commander of the 163rd Division Andrei Zelentsov asked permission to retreat from Suomussalmi. In response, part of the 44th Division, The first Battalion of the 305th Infantry Regiment, and the third Battalion of the 662nd Infrantry Regiment, were sent to reinforce the 163rd Division troops near Suomussalmi. Zelentsov's concerns were not understood at Army Headquarters, as the entire 44th Division was about to move along the Raate road. Most military historians ...

The Winter War - Talvisota - Зимняя война
The Russo-Finnish Winter War of 1939-40. Candida pro causa ense candido! The Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union, David and Golliath, good and evil, democracy and totalitarianism, freedom and slavery, a defensive struggle against the Third Aggressor of WWII. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev, a native Ukranian and later the leader of the Soviet Union, did remember this war very well: "I had firsthand knowledge of what happened, including the strategic miscalculation on our side. The very day the war with Finland started, I was in Moscow with Stalin. He didn't even feel the need to call a meeting. He was sure all we had to do was fire a few artillery rounds and the Finns would capitulate. Instead, they rejected our terms and resisted. There was a false sense of confidence on our side; a few days would pass and we would polish off the Finns. But that didn't happen either. Many of our troops were ground up by the Finns... Stalin lost his nerve after the defeat of our troops in the war against Finland. He probably lost whatever confidence he had that our army could cope with Hitler. Stalin never said so, but I came to this conclusion watching his behavior. We soon realized that we had bitten off more than we could chew. We found ourselves faced with good steel reinforced fortifications and effectively deployed artillery. The Mannerheim line was impregnable. Our casualties mounted alarmingly. In the winter it was decided to ...
