Dracula (1931) Trailer
Dracula (1931) Trailer
Dracula (1931) For More Info On Dracula, please read: robojapan.blogspot.com In 1927 a theatrical adaptation of Dracula written by Hamilton Deane and John L., Balderston became a huge hit on Broadway. This play would star the Hungarian born actor Bela Lugosi who didnt speak a word of English. Lugosi learned all his lines phonetically, which produced the famous speech pattern that Dracula (and most vampires) would become associated with. Bela Lugosi (Bela Ferenc Dezso Blasco) came to America in the 1920s to pursue an acting career. Even though the actor had starred in several small roles prior, he would always be remembered for portraying Dracula, both on stage and in numerous films. After Dracula became a huge hit the actor was offered the part of The Monster in Frankenstein, which he turned down. Boris Karloff would become famous for the part, and Lugosis short term as the King of Horror would end as quickly as it started. Lugosi would go on to play Dracula and other various vampires throughout his career. The actor managed to beat a drug addiction, but ended his career in low budget features such as the infamous Plan 9 From Outer Space which would be his last film. He passed away while it was still in production. Despite all of his stage and film roles the actor died in poverty. Carl Laemmle Jr. had a vision for a big screen adaptation of Dracula for Universal that would have been in the same league as The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera. Bimbo's Initiation (1931)
Bimbo's Initiation (1931)
With the release of Richard Linklatter's feature-length cartoon version of a Philip K. Dick novel, I thought it a good opportunity to turn, however briefly, to what is still, to me, the gold standard in animated cinema. People who apply the term 'Surreal' to films produced in the early 30s by Max and Dave Fleischer are really missing the point. Indeed there are elements that correspond to that swell in the tidepool of European formalism, but to say that it's a defining characteristic (or even an important one) is to, in the same breath, dismiss everything that made their work so unique. As is plain in even a gem as dark as their 1931 film Bimbo's Initiation, the Fleischers were not just following the aesthetic footprints of Old World models, they were running on the freedom granted them by the knowledge that the only restraint on their vision was the limits of their ability. Nothing else accounts for the exhilaration in the center of their finest work. This was a time when popular art accomodated the strange and the unkempt and the lurid and the beautiful far more easily than any point since, a circumstance that brought forth the wild ether in which something like 'Bimbo's Initiation' could be created. There's more joy and horror in thses seven minutes than in all the latter-day cartoon emanations of the last quarter-century. Tom Sutpen

Tower Bridge Road Market (1931)
Tower Bridge Road Market (1931)
This remarkable film showing working class London life was shot around 1931. The majority of the film concentrates on the major street market at the Bricklayer's Arms end of Tower Bridge Road. Although shot without sound, they capture the hustle and bustle of the busy streets wonderfully. We see numerous shops - housed greengrocers, butchers, a baker, a clothes dealer and even a colourman (paint seller). Watch out for a shot of Manzes Pie & Mash shop at number 87, established in 1902 and still open for business today. Almost as fascinating as the people and traders is the range of vehicles captured. These include tradesmen's carts, a tricycle, horse-drawn carts, steam and motor lorries, and - surprisingly - what appears to be a private carriage with a liveried driver. Ruth Etting - "SHINE ON HARVEST MOON" (1931)
Ruth Etting - "SHINE ON HARVEST MOON" (1931)
Shine On, Harvest Moon (from Ziegfeld Follies of 1931) Words and music by Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth Ruth Etting, vocal. Recorded July 28, 1931, in New York. Originally issued on Perfect 12737. This song was first introduced by Nora Bayes and songwriter-husband, Jack Norworth in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1908. Ruth Etting's performance of the song in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1931 was a tribute to Nora Bayes. The 1931 production of the Follies was the last to be produced under the direction Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr.; he died shortly thereafter in 1932. It's interesting to note that Nora Bayes recorded this song for Victor in 1910 but it was never released. "Oh, shine on, shine on, harvest moon up in the sky, I ain't had no lovin' since April, January, June, or July. Snow time ain't no time to stay outdoors and spoon, So shine on, shine on, harvest moon, For me and my gal." FULL HARVEST MOON Traditionally, this designation goes to the full moon that occurs closest to the Autumnal (fall) Equinox. The Harvest Moon usually comes in September, and this year (2011) it will fall on Monday, 12 September. At the peak of the harvest, farmers can work into the night by the light of this moon. Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the US, and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Classic Chicago Tribune Cartoonists - 1931
Classic Chicago Tribune Cartoonists - 1931
An edited excerpt from the silent 1931 promotional documentary, "From Trees to Tribunes," focusing on the Tribune company's stable of cartoonists. At work we can see John T. McCutcheon, Gaar Williams, Carey Orr, Sidney Smith of "The Gumps," Frank King of "Gasoline Alley," Frank Willard of "Moon Mullins, Carl Ed of "Harold Teen," Martin Branner of "Winnie Winkle," Walter Berndt of "Smitty" and Harold Gray of "Little Orphan Annie." Noticeably missing from the line-up is Chester Gould's "Dick Tracy," which didn't begin until October of 1931. From dated materials in the film, the cartoonists appear to have been photographed in February of that year. All three parts of this promotional film can be downloaded at archive.org. The music is 1930's "Medley of Paramount Music" and Ray De Costa's "Whoopee." All video and audio used here are in the public domain.

Clyde McCoy - Sugar Blues (1931 version)
Clyde McCoy - Sugar Blues (1931 version)
Clyde McCoy (Dec.29,1903 - June 11,1990), a famous jazz trumpet player, is best remembered for his themes song, Sugar Blues, and popularity expanding seven decades. Introduced in 1967, the Vox Clyde McCoy Wah-wah pedal was the most significant guitar effect of its time. Invented by a young engineer named Brad Plunkett[1], who worked for the Thomas Organ Company — Vox/JMIs US counterpart — the wah circuit basically sprang from the 3-position midrange voicing function used on the Vox Super Beatle amplifier. Vox cleverly packaged the circuit into an enclosure with a rocker pedal attached to the pot (which controlled the frequency of the resonant peak) and named the new device after trumpeter Clyde McCoy, who was known for the signature wah sound he created with a mute in the bell of his horn. Early versions of the Clyde McCoy featured an image of McCoy on the bottom panel, which soon gave way to his signature only before the name of the pedal was changed to Cry Baby. Thomas Organs failure to trademark the Cry Baby name soon led to the market being flooded with Cry Baby imitations from various parts of the world, including Italy, where the McCoys were originally made.
