Sustaining Global Surveillance and Response to Emerging Zoonotic Diseases
Recent outbreaks of pandemic H1N1 (so-called "swine flu"), avian influenza H5N1 ("bird flu"), and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) are examples of how zoonotic diseases -- those transmissible between humans and animals -- can threaten health and economies around the world. In this video, six members of the authoring committee of Sustaining Global Surveillance and Response to Emerging Zoonotic Diseases, a report from the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, explain why responding to these diseases is so important and the steps they recommend to sustain global surveillance and response.

What are non-food-borne zoonotic diseases? How can they transmit to humans?
Zoonoses are infections that are transmitted from animals to humans. Non-food borne zoonotic diseases, which include avian flu and Q fever, can be transmitted from an infected animal to a human or another animal by other organisms -- such as mosquitoes, ticks, flies, fleas and lice -- or through direct contact or close proximity with infected animals. How can EU citizens be protected from these diseases? A veterinarian who works at the European Food Safety Authority explains.

What are food-borne zoonotic pathogens? Why are they important for public health?
More than 320000 human cases of food-borne zoonotic diseases are confirmed in the European Union each year. Food-borne zoonotic diseases, such as campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis and E. coli, are caused by consuming food or drinking water contaminated by bacteria and their toxins, viruses and parasites. The risks of contamination are present from farm to fork and require prevention and control throughout the food chain. But consumers can also take steps to prevent these diseases. A scientist at EFSA explains.

Zoonotic Diseases and Q Fever Presentations at the Atlantic Veterinary College
The Atlantic Veterinary College held a community workshop about zoonotic diseases on Thursday, October 25, 2012. Dr. J McClure, Professor of Large Animal Medicine at AVC, provided an introduction to zoonotic diseases—what they are, how they work, risk factors for transmission, and preventative measures. He also discussed some potentially emerging zoonotic diseases in Maritime Canada. Dr. Thomas Marrie, Dean of Medicine, Dalhousie University, focused on Q fever, an infection that can be transmitted from animals to humans by infected cattle, sheep, goats, and other animals. The workshop was part of AVC's award-winning Community Workshop Series and was sponsored by AVC Friends&Family;, the College's community-based volunteer advocacy group.

zoonotic diseases, What They Are And Your Risks
Recently several reports concerning zoonotic diseases were released warning of the possibilities of contracting illnesses from our pets. Some of these reports seemed outrageously exaggerated in my opinion. While there are diseases that can be passed between people and animals, known as zoonotic diseases, or zoonosis, it is important to understand how and why and what can be done to reduce the risks with some rationality. In this video we will discuss how these diseases are transmitted, what the risks of contracting one of this illnesses is, and how you can reduce that risk.
