HSBC to face US lawmakers over money laundering charges

Barclays is not the only bank in the spotlight for fraud charges at the moment, as HSBC is set to face US lawmakers following a money laundering, drugs and terrorist financing probe. HSBC is set to "acknowledge AND apologise" to a US Senate hearing on July 17th for its failure to spot money laundering within the bank. According to a leaked memo, the bank will say that is failed to have the appropriate systems and controls in places in order to prevent the possibility of financing terrorism and other criminal activities through money laundering over the period from 2004 to 2010. In the memo HSBC's CEO Stuart Gulliver said "it is right that we are held accountable and that we take responsibility for fixing what went wrong." Analysts predict that the hearing -- titled - "Vulnerabilities to Money Laundering, Drugs, and Terrorist Financing: HSBC Case History" -- could result in a $1bn fine. This case is the latest in a line of probes that have shown banks, such as ING, to pay a penalty for falsifying records and shifting billions of dollars through the US financial system for Iranian and Cuban companies which breach sanctions. Flooding: 1 million people displaced in India
Flooding: 1 million people displaced in India

We experienced flash flooding in Britain yesterday which sadly saw one pensioner killed in Shropshire but the level of upheaval is nothing compared to the devastation happening on the other side of the world. Nearly one million people in India have been displaced in the state of Assam in the north east of the country, as monsoon rains continue their relentless lashing of the area. Reports are that at least 27 people drowned, with others being forced to take shelter on higher ground and in tents. And these pictures are from India's neighbour Bangladesh. The earth under a railway track has given way. 6 days of heavy rains and multiple landslides have killed at least 100 people, with the figure expected to rise as much more rain is forecast to come in over the next few days. It hasn't stopped people trying to make their way to relief camps though as they wade their rickshaws through the high waters. The rains in China triggered mudslides which killed at least 3 people, maybe more. 38 are missing at this construction site -- a hydropower station - in the Sichuan province in the southwest which has been the worst affected by torrential downpours. Most of the injured were builders on the site and members of their family. From a dramatic rescue of a baby from a stranded coach - to life boat rescues and people struggling with what little belongings they could salvage in Hunan Province, the official state news agency said more than 1.5m people have been affected with over 2000 ... Related article

Exceptionally heavy rains have killed at least 19 people and flooded hundreds of houses on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, the local authorities said Friday. The intense rainfall in certain areas of the prefectures of Kumamoto and Oita has attained levels "never experienced before," the Japan Meteorological Agency said. In one part of Kumamoto, the equivalent of one month's rain fell in the space of just eight hours early Thursday, according to the meteorological agency. Besides the 19 people who died -- some of them in landslides and houses that collapsed -- eight people are missing, according to information posted on the websites of the local prefecture offices and fire services. The violent rain has damaged 75 houses and flooded more than 500 in the two prefectures, the local authorities said. Evacuation orders were temporarily issued for tens of thousands of households as the Shirakawa River, which runs through Kumamoto City, began spilling over its banks. Helicopters plucked some residents from the roofs of their homes. Most of the evacuation orders had been lifted by Friday morning. Related article

North Korean military chief removed from all posts
North Korean military chief removed from all posts

Ri Yong-ho, North Korea's top military chief and key advisor to new leader Kim Jong-un, has been removed from all posts, according to state media reports. Reports from Pyongyang state that he was removed from all duties 'because of illness,' but analysts outside North Korea suspect he might have been side-lined for political reasons. The move has surprised many political commentators, with some believing his removal is due to a power struggle in government. Holding top positions in the Worker's Party and chief of the Korean people's army, Ri Yong-ho was believed to be one of the key figures in the North Korean leader's inner circle. Until now the army chief had been seen as a mentor figure to the young and inexperienced Kim Jong-un, who has been trying to successfully negotiate the first few months of his leadership. Kim Jong-un took over the premiership after his father's Kim Jong-il, died in December 2011. It remains to be seen if further dismissals of high ranking officers will take place. Honduras: key bridge in cocaine trafficking
Honduras: key bridge in cocaine trafficking
2:56
Central America is the bridge from the biggest cocaine producers - Colombia, Peru and Bolivia - into Mexico. And Honduras has become a key point in that journey. Hundreds of tonnes of cocaine travel through it. Its coup in 2009 is thought to have provided a window of opportunity for traffickers. Communities are feeling the surge in trafficker presence as suspected drug flights to the country have sharply increased from a handful in 2006 to more than 80 last year. Most traffickers there are Honduran but analysts say there is increasing evidence they're managed by Mexican gangs. Al Jazeera's Monica Villamizar reports from Colon in Honduras. Related article

Oil row with Kurds stirs Iraq tensions

Iraq's Kurdish government has stopped all oil exports to Baghdad following a payment dispute. It is just one issue in the past weeks that is causing tensions between the Kurds in the north and the central authority. There are concerns that a push to sell crude oil to Kurdish markets from what is considered to be one of the last great unexplored oil regions in the world, could persuade Erbil to seek more independence from Baghdad. Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf reports from Erbil. Related article
