Rachael Yamagata (born September 23, 1977)^[1] is an American singer-songwriter and pianist from Arlington, Virginia. She began her musical career with the band Bumpus before becoming a solo artist and releasing four EP's and three studio albums. Her songs have appeared on numerous television shows and she has collaborated with other musicians including Jason Mraz, Rhett Miller, Bright Eyes, Ryan Adams, Toots and the Maytals and Ray Lamontagne.

Yamagata's childhood was divided between her divorced parents; her father, a Washington, D.C.-based attorney; and her mother, an artist/painter living in New York City.^{[citation needed]} Yamagata graduated from the Holton-Arms School for Girls in Bethesda, Maryland and attended Northwestern University and Vassar College.^{[citation needed]}

Yamagata became the vocalist for the Chicago group Bumpus and spent six years touring, writing and recording with the band before leaving in 2001 to begin a solo career. In September 2002, she obtained a two-record deal with Arista's Private Music and her self-titled EP produced by Malcolm Burn, Rachael Yamagata EP was released in October.^{[citation needed]}

Her first full-length album, Happenstance, followed in June 2004 and received favorable reviews.^{[citation needed]}The album produced by John Alagia at Compass Point Studios featured the song "I Want You" and she made videos for the songs Worn Me Down and 1963.

Yamagata toured with Mandy Moore and contributed a song to Moore's 2007 album, Wild Hope.^[2]

In May 2008, Yamagata released a three-song EP, Loose Ends. A full length album Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart was released in October 2008. The song "Jonah" was included as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of the album and another bonus song "He Loves You Deep Inside" was made available online.^[3] Billboard characterized the album as much darker and sadder in tone than its predecessor.^[4] That same month, a two-song live acoustic video performance appeared on LiveDaily Sessions and featured the songs Faster and Sunday Afternoon.^[5]

In April 2009, Yamagata performed her song Elephants on the television drama One Life to Live.^[6]

Yamagata digitally released a new album in the fall of 2011 through Pledgemusic. Her third studio album Chesapeake was released through Frankenfish Records in October 2011.^[7]

Yamagata has appeared numerous times as a guest vocalist for other artists including: Jason Mraz's Did You Get My Message?, Fireflies and The Believer by Rhett Miller and on Toots & the Maytals's True Love, the song Barfly by Ray Lamontagne, and several songs on Ryan Adams' Cold Roses album. She contributed vocals to six tracks on the Bright Eyes album Cassadaga.

Yamagata contributed writing, keyboards and vocals to the song Kaleidoscope by Jill Cunniff a former member of Luscious Jackson. Yamagata also performs with an ensemble cast on the 30 Rock episode "Kidney Now!"^[8] The soundtrack for the film Dear John features the song You Take My Troubles Away, Yamagata's duet with Dan Wilson. She also performs the Muppets song I'm Going To Go Back There Someday on a cover album, Muppets: The Green Album.^[9]

Her songs have appeared on several TV shows, including The L Word, Charmed, How I Met Your Mother, ER , Nip/Tuck, Men in Trees, Alias, One Tree Hill, Los Serrano, Brothers & Sisters, Grey's Anatomy and The O.C., on which she made a guest performance.^{[citation needed]}

William "Sonny" Criss (23 October 1927 – 19 November 1977) was an American jazz musician.^[1]

An alto saxophonist of prominence during the bebop era of jazz, he was one of many players influenced by Charlie Parker.

Biography[link]

William Criss was born in Memphis, Tennessee and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 15. He then went on to play in various bands including Howard McGhee's, which also featured Charlie Parker.^[1]

Criss had developed his own, concise, bluesy tone by this point, and though his basic style did not vary much, his ability on the instrument continued to develop. Nevertheless, he continued to drift from band to band, and played on some records with Johnny Otis, and Billy Eckstine.^[1]

His first major break came in 1947, on a number of jam sessions arranged by jazz impresario Norman Granz. In 1956 he signed to Imperial Records, based in New York, and recorded a series of "underground" classics namely, Jazz U.S.A , Go Man! and Sonny Criss Plays Cole Porter featuring pianist Sonny Clark. Capitol, the masters' owners, reissued them as a 2CD set on their Blue Note imprint in October, 2000. Criss also recorded At the Crossroads, with Kind of Blue pianist Wynton Kelly.

Prestige signed him in 1965, and he continued to record well-acclaimed albums which were mainly rooted in hard bop traditions. The records produced during this period demonstrated his inventive play on the alto sax, and contributed to his growing national recognition. Although some of these albums marketed Criss as a survivor, Sonny's Dream was more substantial, featuring charts by Horace Tapscott. Later sessions were recorded for Muse and Impulse.

By 1977, Criss had developed stomach cancer and did not play again. As a consequence of this painful condition, Criss committed suicide (self-inflicted gunshot) in 1977 in his adopted city of Los Angeles.^[1]

Gary Louris (born March 10, 1955 in Toledo, Ohio) is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter of alternative country and pop music. He was a founding member of the Minneapolis-based band The Jayhawks, and their principal songwriter and vocalist after the departure of Mark Olson; he is often credited with the band's subsequent move from folk-country toward a more progressive, poppier sound.

Early life[link]

Gary Louris grew up in Toledo, Ohio, where he took piano lessons before becoming a guitarist as a teenager. He graduated from St. John's Jesuit High School in 1973.

1985–2005: The Jayhawks[link]

The Jayhawks were formed in 1985 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Louris had formerly played guitar in a rockabilly band called Safety Last. On May 13, 2003 The Jayhawks returned to the Late Show with David Letterman where they performed their title track "Save it For a Rainy Day" off their "Rainy Day Music" CD. The Jayhawks recorded seven albums prior to going on indefinite hiatus in 2005.

In 2011 The Jayhawks reunited and recorded a new album. The lineup consists of Mark Olson, Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Karen Grotberg, and Tim O'Reagan, and, as Louris says, "Our goal is to make the best Jayhawks album that's ever been done". 18 songs had been recorded, 16 of them new, but only 12 will be on the record. The album, Mockingbird Time, was released September 20. The band toured in support.

2005 – present: Solo career[link]

Louris is also a member of the intermittent Midwest musical collective/side-project Golden Smog; other members have included fellow Jayhawk Marc Perlman, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy from Soul Asylum, Kraig Johnson of Run Westy Run and Chris Mars of The Replacements.

In spring 2005, Louris and Olson toured together billed as "From the Jayhawks: An Evening with Mark Olson & Gary Louris, Together Again."

He co-wrote the Nickel Creek song Jealous of the Moon with Chris Thile in 2005, and it appeared on the Nickel Creek album Why Should the Fire Die?.^[1] Louris is also a songwriter on the 2006 Dixie Chicks album Taking the Long Way.

Louris wrote and performed "Every Word," the theme song for the 2006 documentary Wordplay.^[2][3]

In 2008, Louris released his first solo album called Vagabonds. The album was produced by The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson.^[4][5] Of Vagabonds, Louris said in an interview: “It wasn’t my intention to recapture the ’70s or anything, that’s just what comes out when I sing,” Louris says. “Once we got the band together for the sessions, it actually reminded me of how the Jayhawks were when we started out. The music is new and exciting for them, and it was good for me to feed off of that.” ^[6] Vagabonds was recorded in Laurel Canyon, which is famous for being the center of the 1970s' singer-songwriter scene.^[7]

Robinson has also produced a collaboration between Louris and his former Jayhawks bandmate Mark Olson. The album, called Ready for the Flood, was released in November 2008 (January 2009 in the U.S.).

On touring Louris said: "Personally I'm not that into touring anymore. I found that I'm not in a band for that. The type of musician I am I'm not somebody that ad libs and creates. I'm more a recreator who when I tour I tend to recreate parts that I've written so touring and playing live is fun to me to a point." ^[8]

A 1967 Gibson SG guitar – shown in the picture – reputed to have been formerly owned by lead guitarist John King of The Litter is now owned and frequently used by Gary Louris of the Jayhawks and Golden Smog. The Gibson SG guitar was owned from 1977–1986 by Kevin Waddick. Chris Osgood, at the time the guitarist of the legendary Suicide Commandos seminal punk trio, originally suggested that Kevin Waddick buy the guitar and then was the one who later informed Gary Louris that it was for sale. Louris also uses a Martin 00-18V acoustic guitar.
