Summer in the City is the first full-length feature film by director Wim Wenders, released in 1970 and starring Hanns Zischler. Wenders' first full-length film was produced as his graduation project at the Academy of Film and Television in Munich ("Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München") which he attended from 1967 to 1970. Shot in 16 mm black and white by subsequent long-time Wenders collaborator Robby Müller, the movie exhibited many of Wenders' later trademark themes of aimless searching, running from invisible demons, and persistent wandering toward an indeterminate goal. In this case the journey is that of protagonist Hans (Zischler) after he is released from prison. Searching through seedy West German streets and bars, he finally winds up visiting an old friend in Berlin. Accor...

“The world was such a better world in paintings than in reality.” Growing up in post-war Düsseldorf, it was through paintings that German filmmaker Wim Wenders initially discovered the possibility of a different world. This would later come to define him not only as a painter, but also as a filmmaker and photographer, as he shares with us in this personal interview. A painter at heart, Wenders initially regarded film and photography as a simple way to record his surroundings and the camera as an extension of his painting tools. What he discovered, however, was that the camera could depict something that paintings could not - time. To Wenders, each photograph is a sort of time capsule, frozen in time but with an incredible relation to its own past and future, inviting the spectator to se...
They planned every detail, nothing could go wrong, Control the youth to keep the country strong
An assigned occupation and a place to stay, One brushstroke paints the whole world grey
With no individual, no room for dissent, The police came and off to jail he went
No grudges though he had no hate, For the ones who made a god their state
[Chorus]
{you can take what you want from me But you'll never rob me of my dignity, Dignity}
Dignity is a matter of self-respect, gotta be what you are not what others expect
His spirit was strong, he had no shame, for the political slime that was to blame
They beat him no matter what he said, Couldn't destroy what was in his head
He was the object of hate and anger, What didn't destroy him made him stronger
[Chorus]
Summertime for the kids on the street, they're laughing, learning and running from the police
They won't accept mediocrity, They won't let others control their destiny
Wherever it is you go from here, Your fault if you are controlled by fear
