Taking a Stand on Security Sector Reform: The View from North Kivu
There has been some limited success in reforming individual units within the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) security forces. With the right political will, and the support of the international community, broader reform is possible. Small-scale success like that shown in this video can be replicated across the country.Read the full report, Taking a Stand on Security Sector reform, here: www.easterncongo.org

President of the Pygmy community in North Kivu on the state of his people (Virunga NP, DR Congo)
Frankfurt Zoological Society has acquired land for this community of Pygmies so that they can legally live on it. With funding from the World Bank, we will build houses for the Batwa pygmy community, as well as health posts and schools; these facilities will serve both the pygmy community as well as the Bantu (non-pygmy Congolese). We currently support pygmy children with the provision of school equipment and uniforms. Look us up on FaceBook (www.facebook.com/virungaConservationproject) for more information on pygmies and community development in Virunga and in the Democratic Republic of Congo or subscribe to our You Tube channel to stay informed.

MSF Frontline Reports podcast, Ep 103: The Struggle For Basic Medical Care in North Kivu, DRC
Paul Brockmann worked as the project coordinator for a year in the Doctors Without Borders primary health care program in and around the village of Mweso, in North Kivu Province. People living in this area of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have to contend with ongoing insecurity and outbreaks of violence that push them out of their homes. They suffer from preventable diseases like cholera, measles, and malaria, and are often unable to access medical care. Which is why MSF has been working there for 30 years. Here Brockmann describes what he saw during his time in North Kivu. For more information, visit msf.org to find the MSF web site in your home country. MSF, or Doctors Without Borders, is an independent medical humanitarian aid organization that delivers emergency assistance to people affected by wars, epidemics, and natural or man-made disasters in 70 countries around the world.

DRC candidate addresses mass rape allegations
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, campaigning for Monday's national elections is drawing to a close. One of the candidates running for a seat in the country's national assembly is Ntabo Ntaberi Sheka, a rebel group leader who has been formally charged with crimes against humanity over his alleged involvement in the mass rapes of 387 people in 2010. But as Sheka staged his only campaign rally in the Walikale district of the North Kivu province, he told Al Jazeera he was only defending his people. In this Al Jazeera exclusive, Sheka spoke to Al Jazeera's Peter Greste in Walikale.

DR Congo refugees flee to Rwanda
The fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo has displaced hundreds of thousands people, something the UN's refugee agency has described as a disaster. The fighting between DRC troops and rebel soldiers has been most intense in the hills of North Kivu region. Many of the refugees have headed to neighbouring Rwanda. Al Jazeera's Nazanine Moshiri reports from Goma in the eastern DRC, on the border with Rwanda.

May 26, 2012 DR Congo_government forces recapture part of Mbuzi mountain from rebels.mp4
The government of Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) said on Saturday it captured part of the Mbuzi mountain region, where the rebels of the March 23 Movement (M23) had been holding ground. For the past fortnight, the national army has been engaged in heavy fighting with rebels of M23, a rebel military group based in DRC's eastern areas. But the exchange of fire on Saturday was reported to be the most intense ever since. The military took up positions early Saturday. Mbuzi mountain area is of strategic importance as the rebels could spot from afar any new deployment of the government forces. And it was here that the most intense fighting took place. It was a difficult fight for the government forces since most of the soldiers are poorly equipped, without such basic battle necessities as bullet-proof vests and combat boots. And casualties rose as fighting continued. Some wounded soldiers had to be carried down the mountain by their comrades. The army is confident of victory as at least 40 rebels have been reportedly surrender in the past two days. However, the daily life of local residents in the mountain area was seriously affected. A large number of local residents fled to safer areas, leaving business abandoned and schools closed behind. In the month-long fighting that started in North Kivu Province in the eastern part of the country, the government forces have managed to drive the rebels out of Masisi area, a hot spot when the battle began, and forced them to ...

May 25, 2012 DR Congo_Conflicts continue in DRCongo
A large number of government troops gathered in Tamugenga, Rutshuru Town late Friday afternoon in a major ground-offensive preparation against the 'June 23 Movement' (M23) rebels. The M23 group is made up of soldiers allied to General Bosco Ntaganda. Since April 27, when the current wave of clashes between DRC government armed-forces and supporters of former rebel commander Bosco Ntaganda broke out, tens of thousands of people have been displaced in North Kivu Province with some fleeing to neighboring Uganda and Rwanda. It has been reported that throughout each day recently, trucks have been ferrying soldiers deployed from various regions in eastern Congo to Rotiro - where the M23 rebels have been waging war against the government since nearly a month ago. The national army, meanwhile, camped only six kilometers away from where the M23 rebels are holding ground, reports confirm. "We have been fighting the rebels for several weeks now and I know we are going to defeat them. Most of them have been surrendering to the government," said a soldier of DR Congo Armed Forces (FADRC). The residents are hoping for an end to the conflict as most of them have had to escape the current volatile turn of events. For those families, the past few weeks have probably been the most difficult time they have faced, living a life they never expected nor experienced before. For now, Rutshuru Town region in North Kivu Province remains on high alert with regular patrols from both the government ...

DR Congo, North-Kivu : Displaced. (July 2009)
Displaced. Since 1994, the North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo has suffered under constant instability. Even thought the reasons for that instability may have varied, the local civilian populations have always been the ones who suffered. Since 2007, with the fighting between CNDP rebels and the Congolese army starting again,800,00 persons were displaced. They ran away from the atrocities that they endured in their villages and their homes (looting rapes, forced recruitment especially for children). Being displaced, these people lost their food and seed supplies. They can no longer cultivate their fields, and meet their needs, especially for food. OXFAM PROTECTION PROGRAMMES IN MWESO, EASTERN CONGO.mp4
While Congo is officially at peace, life for civilians in Mweso, Masisi territory, in North Kivu, eastern Congo, is anything but peaceful. Ongoing instability, increased violence and a deterioration in the basic humanitarian situation, with continued displacements of communities as a result of military conflict, worsening ethnic tensions and land disputes has made daily life for most a constant challenge. Since last July, and with funding from Irish Aid, Oxfam Ireland and a multi-donor UN humanitarian fund, Oxfam has operated an integrated public health and protection programme in ten sites in areas affected by conflict in the Mweso health zone with the goal of making life for those displaced, returned and host communities safer.

www.witness.org and http | Our Voices Matter features women and girls victims/survivors of rape and sexual violence from North Kivu, South Kivu and Province Orientale, who have come forward to tell their stories, demanding justice, assistance and the effective implementation of legislation to prevent and address sexual and gender-based violence. Our Voices Matter is a call to action. Background Since 1996, the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced war and widespread insecurity.
