Theater Talk: Actress Eileen Atkins, of "Doubt"
Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins. The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.) The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts. "Impossible!" from 'A Room of One's Own' by Virginia Woolf
Taken from a series of lectures on "Women and fiction", published and famously titled, "A Room of One's Own", Virginia Woolf considers what would have befallen William Shakespeare had he been born a woman. Eileen Atkins - in a bravura performance - recreates this passage from the lectures.

www.btowstore.com www.audible.co.uk Dora Chance lets a listener into her far-from-dull history as she and her twin sister Nora celebrate their 75th birthday. A life on the stage (and below, above and behind it) yields a wealth of bawdy, shocking and often moving moments which chart a couple of lives less ordinary.

William Butler Yeats - The Lake Isle Of Innisfree - Eileen Atkins
Eileen Atkins reads William Butler Yeats's The Lake Isle Of Innisfree The Lake Isle Of Innisfree by William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made: Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee; And live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of the linnet's wings. I will arise and go now, for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep heart's core.

The Duchess of Malfi - by John Webster (trailer [1972])
So, I really have no idea why this play isn't performed more often than it is. I really don't. It's got enough intrigue, plot-twists, madness, poisonings, accidental stabbings, incest, werewolves, ghosts and severed limbs to keep a director like Tarantino happily busy. I'm drooling on the keyboard just thinking about what an awesome movie this could make... But speaking of movies, after studying the play in a 3rd-year-level university Renaissance Drama course, I was lucky enough to find this BBC production that was done and filmed in 1972. The TV production quality itself is pretty average, but the performances by the lead actors are absolutely fantastic. A young Eileen Atkins is perfectly cast as a strong-willed, powerful, sassy Duchess, and I thought Charles Kay was going to light my TV on fire with his absolutely terrifying and engrossing intensity. If you can get your mitts on a copy of this, watch it. And prepare to bite all your fingernails off. In the meantime, here's a little 'trailer' I pieced together in a couple of days to possibly convince you further. I recognize how amateur the quality is; I don't have a lot of experience changing analog to digital, so I apologize for the craptastic interlacing problems and muddy audio. However, hope you still enjoy! As always, please feel free to leave a comment or general feed-back. Always love to hear from you guys.

Peace Camp preview trailer
We are delighted to bring you a sneak preview of our next project, PEACE CAMP, which will take place simultaneously at eight different locations between 19 and 22 July. Created by Deborah Warner in collaboration with Fiona Shaw, it will take the form of eight illuminated encampments, which visitors will explore between dusk and dawn, hearing a soundscape by composer Mel Mercier of voices speaking the great love poetry of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. This trailer gives a tantalising glimpse of what's in store for the adventurous spirits who visit one of the extraordinary places around the UK. It features the voices of actors Ioan Gruffudd and Eileen Atkins.
With thanks to Matthew Andrews for the footage and Joe Murray for the editing.
