Ancient Etruria II: Civilization without empire
Ancient Etruria II: Civilization without empire
ETRURIA en.wikipedia.org "In the eighth century BC, time of westward expansion, Phoenicians going west, Greeks going west, founding colonies. When the Greeks sailed into Italy, they found something they didn't expect. An advanced civilization already there." --Professor Richard E. Prior, Ancient Historian, Furman University, South Carolina, from the documentary 'Rome: Power & Glory' As has been stated here before, the perception is that Rome more-or-less came from the Greeks. The truth is a lot different. As the above quote reflects, the Etruscans were trendsetters on thier own. That doesn't mean that, in many ways, the Greeks weren't the forerunners of what later became Western civilization. However, in most areas of human endeavor, the Etruscans were the equal to the Greeks. They apparently were not looking to expand, as they already were in a virtual Garden of Eden. They were not sea faring people. They conducted a lot of land trading, with the north mostly, it appears. After the Romans shattered the Etruscans, as the victors always do, they rewrote the history. Until fairly recently, the Etruscans didn't even exist in the history books. Now we know that the Romans took Etruscan technology and began to form their plan for an empire. They leveled the vast majority of what had been Etruscan. [Music: 'Hazelwood' by Silver On The Tree]

Wedgwood Etruria Pottery, Staffordshire (1926)
Wedgwood Etruria Pottery, Staffordshire (1926)
The Wedgwood Pottery provides the only internal sequence in the film - the potter at his wheel and the ladies at work in the painting room. Thisextract comes from Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' - originally filmed in 1925/6 and now re-edited and digitally restored by the BFI National Archive. Britain seen in colour for the first time was heralded as a great technical advance for the cinema audience - now we can view a much improved image, but one which still stays true to the principles of the colour process. The rather haphazard journey from Land's End to John O'Groats creates a series of moving picture postcards. Look out for shots containing the component colours - red and blue-green - such as when a little girl in a red coat and hat walks among peacocks in the grounds of a castle, and three girls with red curly hair pose by the sea at Torquay. The car is a Vauxhall D-type - considered a sporty model at the time. A long-distance journey by car was a relatively new concept, with none of the amenities en route now taken for granted. The visit to a petrol station shows smoking on the forecourt: no health and safety issues back then! The travelogue ends with a series of recognisable London landmarks. Much remains the same - one major exception being the volume of traffic on the roads. Etruria Shipwreck, Lake Huron, USA
Etruria Shipwreck, Lake Huron, USA
Etruria shipwreck, discovered in spring of 2011, Lake Huron, USA. This wreck is upside down, with most of the superstructure crushed or buried in the lake bottom. This video is from a single dive to the bow, which was our first dive on the wreck. There is not much superstructure remaining, but cabins within the hull should be penetrable and the cargo holds are intact and penetrable. Visibility is not as good as most other wrecks in the Presque Isle area. Depth is 300 feet at the bottom. A big thanks goes to Tracy Xelowski for placing the mooring line. When you watch this, remember that everything is upside down!

Ancient Etruria: Ghosts of the Past
ETRURIA en.wikipedia.org Etruscan civilization is the modern English name given to a civilization of ancient Italy in an area corresponding roughly to Tuscany, whom the ancient Romans called Etrusci or Tusci.[1] Their Roman name is the origin of the names of Tuscany, their heartland, and Etruria, their wider region.

Why girls shouldn't summon tentacle demons
From Tower of Etruria. A summoning goes horribly awry. It's their nature, really... jeez, use your head a little. And yes, no subs, but you get the jist of it, right? Riiight.
