Brasilia, the capital of Brazil
Brasilia, the capital of Brazil
Brasilia was built to be Brazil's new capital city. The idea was to transfer the federal capital of Brazil from the coast to midwestern / interior of the country. Brazil had had two capital cities before that: Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia. By transferring the capital city to the interior, the government intended to help to populate that area of the county. People from all over the country were hired to build the city, but especially those from the Northeast region of Brazil. Brasilia is known, internationally, for having applied the principles established in the Athens Charter of 1933. President Juscelino Kubitschek ordered the construction of Brasília, fulfilling an article of the country's constitution stating that the capital should be moved from Rio de Janeiro to a place close to the center of the country. Lúcio Costa won a contest and was the main urban planner. Oscar Niemeyer, a close friend of Lúcio, was the chief architect of most public buildings and Roberto Burle Marx was the landscape designer. Brasília was built in 41 months, from 1956 to April 21, 1960 when it was officially inaugurated. From 1763 to 1960, Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil. At this time, resources tended to be centred in Brazil's southeast region near Rio de Janeiro. Brasília's geographical central location made for a more regionally neutral federal capital. The idea of placing Brazil's capital in the interior dates back to the first republican constitution of 1891, which ...

BRASILIA
BRASILIA
Brasilia is Brazil's capital city and was constructed in the nineteen fifties in futuristic style, a veritable playground for both planners and architects and also a considerable challenge for both builders and civil engineers. The general idea had been to transform what could have been fifty years of building work into just five, but they actually achieved it in just four! Brasilia was recognised as a symbol of outstanding design and in 1987 it was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Congresso Nacional is the city's most famous building complex, Oscar Niemeyer's personal masterpiece, with a dome and bowl linked by two towers and corridors with photo galleries and countless government offices that form a mighty centre of administrative power. The Palacio Da Alvorada was one of the first structures to be built in the city and is located in a fine position on an artificial lake. The president's one hundred and ten metre long private residence can only be viewed from the outside under the watchful eye of the military. The pedestrianised monument, Panteao Da Patria Tancredo Neves, is adorned by a fine white dove. A memorial to democracy in esoterically inspired Bauhaus architecture.

Brasília 52 anos, Patrimônio Cultural da Humanidade - Brasília - UNESCO World Heritage Centre
Brasilia Brasilia, a capital created ex nihilo in the centre of the country in 1956, was a landmark in the history of town planning. Urban planner Lucio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer intended that every element -- from the layout of the residential and administrative districts (often compared to the shape of a bird in flight) to the symmetry of the buildings themselves -- should be in harmony with the city's overall design. The official buildings, in particular, are innovative and imaginative. Brasilia, a capital created ex nihilo in the centre of the country in 1956, was a landmark in the history of town planning. The 20th-century principles of urbanism, as expressed by Le Corbusier, have rarely been applied on the scale of capital cities. Only two noteworthy exceptions exist: Chandigarh and Brasilia. Its creators intended that every element, from the layout of the residential and administrative districts (often compared to the shape of a bird in flight) to the symmetry of the buildings themselves, should be in harmony with the city's overall design. The official buildings, in particular, are innovative and imaginative. The idea of building a capital in the interior of Brazil is an old one, having been proposed on various occasions since the end of the 17th century. When elected president of the Republic of Brazil in 1955, Juscelino Kubitschek made the creation of the capital city a symbol of his policy to upgrade the image of the entire country, to expand industry ...

'Bird Shit Architecture' in Brasilia and Beyond
'Bird Shit Architecture' in Brasilia and Beyond
Complete video at: fora.tv Jan Gehl, architect, urban planner, and author of Cities for People, discusses what he calls "bird shit architecture," a trend in urban planning that originated in the 1950's and persists to the present day. This type of architecture, he explains, is designed to look good from a plane, but not practical for the actual residents of a city. ----- An important paradigm change happened around 1960. City planning, as a concept, took off on a huge scale in response to the challenge of fast-growing cities. At the same time, traffic planning took over the planning at eye level to address the rapid influx of cars. In the rough and tumble of all this, caring for the people who use cities was completely left behind. By 1961, people like Jane Jacobs raised her voice about this new situation in her book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities. But, not much happened for three or four decades. The idea of "Cities for People" became an overlooked and forgotten dimension. This is the story told by Jan Gehl in his new book. He describes why looking after people is crucial for the quality of cities in the 21st century, how it can be accomplished and how it is actually done by now in more and more projects in more and more cities. The transformations carried out in such cities as Copenhagen, Melbourne, Sydney, Amman and New York will serve as examples of this new people-oriented direction in planning. - Australian Broadcasting Corporation Jan Gehl is a ...
