Manado (pronounced [məˈnado]^{[citation needed]}) is the capital of the North Sulawesi province of Indonesia. Manado is located at the Bay of Manado,^[1] and is surrounded by a mountainous area. The city has about 405,715 inhabitants,^[2] making it the second-largest city in Sulawesi after Makassar. The municipality of Manado is divided into nine districts: Malalayang, Sario, Wanea, Tikala, Wenang, Mapanget, Singkil, Tuminting and Bunaken.

Etymology[link]

The name Manado comes from manadou or wanazou meaning "on the far coast" or "in the distance," and originally referred to the further of two islands which can be seen from the mainland. When the settlement on this island was relocated to the mainland, the name Manado was brought with it, after which the island itself became referred to as Manado Tua ("Old Manado").^[3]

History[link]

The first mention of Manado comes from a world map by cartographer Nicolas Desliens, where it showed the island Manarow (today's Manado Tua). Before Europeans arrived to North Sulawesi the area was under the rule of the Sultan of Ternate, who exacted tribute and introduced the Muslim religion among some of its inhabitants. The Portuguese made the Sultan their vassal, taking possession of the Minahasa and established a factory in Wenang.

Meanwhile, the Spanish had already set themselves up in the Philippines and Minahasa was used to plant coffee that came from South America because of its rich soil. Manado was further developed by Spain to become the center of commerce for the Chinese traders who traded the coffee in China. With the help of native allies the Spanish took over the Portuguese fortress in Amurang in the 1550s, and Spanish settlers also established a fort at Manado, so that eventually Spain controlled all of the Minahasa. It was in Manado where one of the first Indo-Eurasian (Mestizo) communities in the archipelago developed during the 16th century.^[4] The first King of Manado (1630) named Muntu Untu was in fact the son of a Spanish Mestizo.^[5]

Spain renounced to her possessions in Minahasa by means of a treaty with the Portuguese in return for a payment of 350,000 ducats.^[6] Minahasan natives made an alliance treaty with the Dutch and expelled the last of the Portuguese from Manado a few years later.

The Dutch East India Company or Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie (VOC) built a fortress in Manado named Fort Amsterdam in 1658. As with regions in eastern Indonesia, Manado has undergone Christianization by Dutch missionaries, including Riedel and John Gottlieb Schwarz. And the Dutch missionaries built the first Christian church in Manado called Oude Kerk (Old church) and it is still stand now and now it is called Gereja Sentrum. The Javanese prince Diponegoro was exiled to Manado by the Dutch government in 1830 for leading a war of rebellion against the Dutch. The English biologist Alfred Wallace visited Manado in 1859, and praised the town for its beauty.

In 1919, the Apostolic Prefecture of Celebes was established in the city. In 1961, it was promoted as the Diocese of Manado.

The Japanese captured Manado in the Battle of Manado in January 1942.^[7] The city was heavily damaged by Allied bombing during World War II.

In 1958, the headquarters of the rebel movement Permesta was moved to Manado. When Permesta confronted the central government with demands for political, economic and regional reform, Jakarta responded by bombing the city in February 1958, and then invading in June 1958.

COELACANTH[link]

The coelacanth relatives were all recognized as extinct with the dinosaurs and remained fossils only but the first witness of the coelacanth in human era was in 1938 and 1952 by the African east coast sea near Madagascar.

Again, July 2007 Coelacanth was captured accidentally by a fisherman in Manado bay and based on this information Japanese Oceanographic survey FUKUSHIMA team including Mr. Masamitsu Iwata conducted 1st survey in 2007. In 2nd survey of Oct 2010 they successfully confirmed the world's first juvenile habitat and swim about 200m below the sea level and captured by ROV video camera. African coelacanth specimen(Latimeria chalumnae) of formalin preservation which is imported from Comoros Islands is currently exhibited at FUKUSHIMA Aqua Marine in Japan as the living fossil.

There was a plan to display those rare species of marine organismsats in museum in some place in the region however the replacement facility and a museum or marine aquarium to save those rare marine species are not available and it is the remaining subjects and all depended on how regional government challenges toward above project.

Manado including Minahasa highland region will be the major international tourist destination city inundated with tourists from all over the world once direct flights of air route access are opened for MANADO international airport which is the shortest airport in Indonesia from north and eastern countries including Japan and Korea to observe the live coelacanth which are inhabit and exhibited in the Marine Park Aquarium at close range on the ground by the observer's eyes after completion of facilities/project.

Tourism and Places of interest[link]

Sam Ratulangi International Airport

As the largest city in the region, Manado is a key tourist transit point for visitors. Sam Ratulangi International Airport of Manado is one of the main entry ports to Indonesia. In 2005, no less than 15,000 international passengers entered Indonesia via Sam Ratulangi International Airport.

Manado is also home to some of the biggest and most influential churches in the province, with many of them located along the iconic Sam Ratulangi Street.^[8] Ecotourism is the biggest attraction in Manado.

Scuba diving and snorkelling on the nearby Bunaken National Park, including the island of Bunaken are popular attractions.^[9][10][11]

Ban Hin Kiong Temple is another popular tourism spot in the city, especially during the Chinese new year celebration. Souvenirs shops are located on B.W. Lapian street.

Other places of interest are nearby Lake Tondano, Lake Linow,^[12] Lokon Volcano, Klabat Volcano and Mahawu Volcano.

Citraland, a wealthy suburb of Manado, is home to Asia's 2nd tallest and the world's 4th tallest statue of Christ (Christ Blessing Statue), and perhaps the world's first statue in the flying posture.^[13]

Wakeke Street, somewhere on the middle of the town, was resolved by the local government as culinary tourism area for tinutuan or bubur manado, that is manadonese porridge.^[14]Indonesia's only active synagogue is in Manado.^[15]

Shopping malls[link]

It is easy to find places to shop around Manado, as many of the shopping malls are located on Piere Tendean Boulevard. There are four modern shopping malls there, namely Mega Mall, Manado Town Square, Boulevard Mall and IT Center. Traffic jams frequently occur at Piere Tendean Boulevard because of the existence of the shopping malls.

Manado Boulevard Carnaval (MBC) is a Fashion Carnival at every 16 July inline with Manado City Birthday.^[16]

Climate[link]

Manado features a tropical rainforest climate under the Koppen climate classification. The city averages roughly 2850 mm of rain annually. Manado has a noticeably wetter season that spans from November through June and a drier season that covers the remaining four months. However, Manado does not have a true dry season where monthly precipitation figures falls below 60 mm. As with many other cities with this climate, average temperatures remain constant throughout the year, with average high temperatures at around 30 degrees Celsius and average low temperatures at around 24 degrees Celsius.

The local language spoken in Manado and the surrounding area is a creole of the Malay language called Manado Malay.

Dr. Gerungan Saul Samuel Jozias Ratulangi or Ratu Langie (November 5, 1890 – June 30, 1949), usually known as Sam Ratulangi, was a Minahasa politician, journalist and teacher from North Sulawesi, Indonesia. His famous saying in the Tondano language 'Si Tou Timou Tumou Tou' is translated as 'men lives to help others live'.

The son of Jozias Ratulangi and Augustina Gerungan, both from wealthy, well-respected Minahasa families, Sam Ratulangi was born in Tondano, North Sulawesi, at the time a part of the Dutch East Indies. He was a gifted student, who after completing his studies in Tondano and Batavia went to Amsterdam in the Netherlands for further studies. He graduated from a teacher's college as a science teacher in 1915, studied for two more years at the University of Amsterdam, and in 1919 earned his Ph.D. at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

On his return to Indonesia, he moved to Yogyakarta to teach science at a high school, and then moved on to Bandung to found the insurance company Assurantie Maatschappij Indonesia — the first known instance of the word "Indonesia" being used in an official document. He had already led some Indonesian students' associations in Europe, and in 1924 was appointed as secretary of the Council of Minahasan Students. He used this position to lobby for more rights and is widely credited with getting the Dutch to abolish forced labor (Herendiensten) in Minahasa.

Appointed to the Volksraad (the Dutch East Indies' parliament) in 1927, he continued to agitate for equal rights and was one of the founding members of the United Scholars of Indonesia (Vereniging van Indonesische Academici) in 1932. He continued to serve in the Volksraad until 1937, when he was arrested and jailed for several months due to his increasing political involvement. He then became the editor of Nationale Commentaren, a Dutch-language news and issues magazine.

In June 1937 his book Indonesia in den Pacific was published, a visionary book, in which Sam Ratulangie warned against the militarisation of Japan and the possibility that Japan might invade the Indonesian archipel because of its natural resources which Japan lacks. And he described the leading role Indonesia and other countries in South-East Asia around the Pacific Rim could play - the Pacific Ocean could equal the Atlantic in importance.

In early August 1945, he was appointed as one of the members of the Preparatory Committee on Indonesian Independence, and after Sukarno's unilateral declaration of independence on August 17, he was thereafter appointed as the governor of Celebes (Sulawesi) on August 22. Arrested by the Dutch on April 5, 1946, he was exiled for three years to Serui on Yapen Island, Western New Guinea. Freed briefly on March 23, 1948 and brought to Yogyakarta, he was captured again on December 25, 1948 when the Dutch occupied Yogyakarta. Due to his failing health, he was released again in Jakarta in February 1949, where he died on June 30.

In August 1961, Ratulangi was posthumously awarded the title of Pahlawan Kemerdekaan Nasional (National Independence Hero) by Sukarno. Manado's Sam Ratulangi Airport, the main thoroughfare Jalan Sam Ratulangi and the Sam Ratulangi University are all named after him.
