Sea-Level Rise, Subsidence, and Wetland Loss
More information on the USGS Multimedia Gallery: gallery.usgs.gov This video describes causes of wetland loss in the Mississippi River Delta. Rapid land subsidence due to sediment compaction and dewatering increases the rate of submergence in this deltaic system. The construction of levees along the lower Mississippi River also has reduced delivery of sediments to coastal wetlands, which have been deteriorating as soil surfaces sink and wetland plants are subjected to excessive flooding. Other factors that have contributed to land loss include construction of canals and periodic hurricanes. Sea-level rise can lead to movement of saltwater inland, but coastal plants tolerate salinity through several morphological and physiological mechanisms. The causes of wetland loss are complex and not the result of any single factor. Natural and anthropogenic factors have combined with global processes such as sea level rise to cause wetland loss in the Mississippi River Delta.

GEOSEC™ - THE SUBSIDENCE
Very often we are asked to explain what the ground subsidence that affects buildings actually is, and why such phenomena occur. People inevitably get extremely worried when they see cracks appearing on their walls.

Subsided Ground...Fallen Futures (Part 1 of 2)
This short documentary brings the enormously destructive process of longwall mining up from the depths of the vast Pittsburgh Coal Seam and into public view for the first time. Under hundreds of square miles of Pennsylvania's Greene and Washington Counties longwall mining leaves the earth's surface unsupported. Subsidence damage to structures - like homes, farms, and roads - is inevitable. Longwall mining also damages entire watersheds, depriving the land and its occupants of springs, streams, ponds and wells, creating an environmental disaster of local and national importance. This 15-minute documentary portrays the experience of two families as they struggle to cope with extensive longwall subsidence damage to their historic homesteads. Written and directed by Emmy Award winning journalist Terri Taylor. For more information or to request screening copies, please contact: Terri Taylor, 412-242-7995 or zeolite@verizon.net

The British Pathe Cameras visited Swadlincote in 1954 to show the extent of subsidence from mining. This is a low resolution copy available free from the British Pathe website. High resolution copies can be purchased from Pathe for a small fee. I believe the voice on the film is that of Eamonn Andrews. A famous Sports commentator and TV presenter in the 1950's

GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVAL: Land Subsidence in Florida - Sinkhole Cancels Naples Church Services!
A Naples church and daycare were forced to be held outside on Sunday. The pastor of Faith Community Church says a growing sinkhole underneath the building is to blame. "It's heartbreaking. There's nothing we can do about it," says Pastor Roy Shuck. Shuck says the sinkhole may be shifting tiles near the church's nursery and splitting walls where they pray. The ground has shifted so much that Shuck says it now slopes four inches down. On Thursday, Collier County officials deemed the church unsafe for the congregation. That forced Sunday services to be held outside. "The church is us together, so we can still have church whether we have a building or not," says church member Christine Schott. News they couldn't get inside rattled some members, however. "I felt sad because I don't want it to be destroyed because it will hurt. It will be very bad if it's destroyed," says church member Eli Bickford. It's too soon to know if the building can be saved. "We built the church with ideas that we will be expanding someday. I don't know, maybe God, I know he has plans for us," says Schott. GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVAL: Land Subsidence Continues in China - Sinkhole Swallows Girl in Xi'an!
A teenage girl walking along a sidewalk in China fell six metres into a sinkhole after the seemingly normal section of pavement collapsed right under her feet. She was talking on her phone, but that distraction can't be blamed for this unknown weak section of sidewalk in Xi'an, the capital of the China's northwest Shaanxi Province. Luckily, a taxi driver named Wang Wei saw the girl fall, stopped his cab in the middle of the street and jumped out to help. "I called out to her and she didn't respond," said the cab driver and Good Samaritan in the video above. Wei then climbed into the pit. "After I shook her a little she came to." Firefighters arrived on scene and lowered a ladder into the narrow pit. Wei told local media the girl seemed scared because the ladder didn't seem stable so he said he'd protect her as she climbed up. The hole was caused by underground water eroding the ground, causing a cavity under the pavement. Therefore there was not enough earth under that section of sidewalk and the pavement was not strong enough to support her weight. Water moving underground is a similar reason for the creation of many sinkholes, including some big ones in Canada. Last month, one opened up on a major Saskatoon road that was large enough to drive a car into. It was caused by a break in a pipe under the road that caused water to swirl beneath the asphalt and erode the dirt. In November, a 30-metre long one opened up in the Toronto area on Bayview Ave. north of Steeles Ave ...

0:00 Pelvis sides, elbows and knees feel pain. Projecting parts began to ache, I assume. 0:15 On bed, observation. The back found to be feverish. 1:00 Reminded what was done yesterday. It was rear head, right shell etcetera. 1:50 Left elbow was found to have a relation to ligament nuchae. That means to pull shoulder is to pull the ligament and head skin. 3:00 Right elbow was found to have a relation with the injection side of her head. When I touched there, her right calf moved (I felt it). 3:50 She complained that her right ankle ached. Actually, it was on the nut inside of the ankle. That nut point is a tension concentrating place like outer nut. 5:20 Nut by rear head was done. 6:10 Supersonic Vega was put on rear head. 7:50 Pelvis and calf was done.

Tar Creek - Beneath It All, Part 2 (Subsidence/Cave-ins)
I (Tami Marler) traveled to the small community of Picher, Oklahoma in late 2000 to cover a "run-of-the-mill" general assignment story. I had passed through the tiny Ottawa County town several times at night as a college student, back when rumors abounded of the supposedly "devil-worshipping," dangerous people who lived in Picher. When I returned in 2000 as an adult with children of my own, I was so flabbergasted by what I saw in what was then the largest Superfund site in the United States. I begged my news director to allow me to tell the story of Picher, Oklahoma. To his credit, he gave me generous time to research and, more importantly, show and tell viewers about the travesties against the people and the land by the mining companies, politicians and remediation contractors. The following three-part series brought unprecedented attention to the Tar Creek Superfund site, and I believe played a major role in the eventual buyout and shut-down of the former lead and zinc mining mecca that sat atop the nation's Superfund list for more than 20 years.

Right buttock, leg 0:00 Pelviss upper rim was the point to be done or used with The Achilles or heel bone. 0:50 During buttock was being done by my fingers, right ankle began to ache. 1:50 My talk was, finger tips have much nerves, therefore the resonance with her body is very strong. Human body is always active in electro-magnetic movement. Of course it is only a hypothesis inducted through my experience. 2:50 Right buttock by right elbow was tried. 3:10 When I massaged right buttock, whole the right leg moved and murmured. Hereafter, buttock, leg, lower leg were tried many thing.
