Sir Ridley Scott (born 30 November, 1937) is an English film director and producer. His most famous films include ''The Duellists'' (1977), ''Alien'' (1979), ''Blade Runner'' (1982), ''Legend'' (1985), ''Black Rain'' (1989), ''Thelma & Louise'' (1991), ''Gladiator'' (2000), ''Hannibal'' (2001), ''Black Hawk Down'' (2001), ''Kingdom of Heaven'' (2005) ''American Gangster'' (2007), ''Body of Lies'' (2008), and Prometheus (2012).

Scott has been nominated for three Academy Awards for Directing, as well as Golden Globe and Emmy Awards. He was knighted in the 2003 New Year Honours. In 2011, Scott received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is the older brother of film director Tony Scott.

Early Life[link]

Scott was born in South Shields, England, the son of Elizabeth and Colonel Francis Percy Scott. He was raised in an Army family, meaning that for most of his early life, his father — an officer in the Royal Engineers — was absent. Ridley's older brother, Frank, joined the Merchant Navy when he was still young and the pair had little contact. During this time the family moved around, living in (among other areas) Cumbria, Wales and Germany. He has a younger brother, Tony, also a film director. After the Second World War, the Scott family moved back to their native north-east England, eventually settling in Teesside (whose industrial landscape would later inspire similar scenes in ''Blade Runner''). He enjoyed watching films, and his favourites include ''Lawrence of Arabia'', ''Citizen Kane'' and ''Seven Samurai''. Scott studied in Teesside from 1954 to 1958, at Grangefield Grammar School and later in West Hartlepool College of Art, graduating with a Diploma in Design.

He went on to study at the Royal College of Art, contributing to the college magazine, ''ARK'', and helping to establish its film department. For his final show, he made a black and white short film, ''Boy and Bicycle'', starring his younger brother, Tony Scott, and his father. The film's main visual elements would become features of Scott's later work; it was issued on the 'Extras' section of ''The Duellists'' DVD. After graduation in 1963, he secured a job as a trainee set designer with the BBC, leading to work on the popular television police series ''Z-Cars'' and the science fiction series ''Out of the Unknown''.

He was assigned to design the second ''Doctor Who'' serial, ''The Daleks'', which would have entailed realising the famous alien creatures. However, shortly before Scott was due to start work, a schedule conflict meant that he was replaced on the serial by Raymond Cusick.

In 1968, Ridley and Tony Scott founded Ridley Scott Associates (RSA), a film and commercial production company. Five members of the Scott family are directors, all working for RSA. Brother Tony has been a successful film director for more than two decades; sons, Jake and Luke are both acclaimed commercials directors as is his daughter, Jordan Scott. Jake and Jordan both work from Los Angeles and Luke is based in London.

In 1995, Shepperton Studios was purchased by a consortium headed by Ridley and Tony Scott, which extensively renovated the studios while also expanding and improving its grounds.

Beginnings[link]

Working with Alan Parker, Hugh Hudson, Hugh Johnson at RSA during the 1970s, Scott made television commercials in the UK including most notably the 1974 Hovis advert, "Bike Round" (New World Symphony), which was filmed in Shaftesbury, Dorset.

''The Duellists''[link]

''The Duellists'' of 1977 was Ridley Scott's first feature film. It was produced in Europe and won a Best Debut Film medal at the Cannes Film Festival but made limited commercial impact in the US. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, it featured two French Hussar officers, D'Hubert and Feraud (played by Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel). Their quarrel over an initially minor incident turns into a bitter, long-drawn out feud over the following fifteen years, interwoven with the larger conflict that provides its backdrop. The film is lauded for its historically authentic portrayal of Napoleonic uniforms and military conduct, as well as its accurate early-19th-century fencing techniques recreated by fight choreographer William Hobbs. It is also lauded for the stunning cinematography of the Dordogne.

''Alien''[link]

Scott's box office disappointment with ''The Duellists'' was compounded by the success received by Alan Parker with American-backed films — Scott admitted he was "ill for a week" with envy. Scott had originally planned to next adapt a version of ''Tristan and Iseult'', but after seeing ''Star Wars'', he became convinced of the potential of large scale, effects-driven films. He therefore accepted the job of directing ''Alien'', the ground-breaking 1979 horror/science-fiction film that would give him international recognition.

While Scott would not direct the three ''Alien'' sequels, the female action hero Ellen Ripley (played by Sigourney Weaver), introduced in the first film, would become a cinematic icon. Scott was involved in the 2003 restoration and re-release of the film including media interviews for its promotion. At this time Scott indicated that he had been in discussions to make the fifth and final film in the ''Alien'' franchise. However, in a 2006 interview, the director remarked that he had been unhappy about ''Alien: The Director's Cut'', feeling that the original was "pretty flawless" and that the additions were merely a marketing tool.

''Blade Runner''[link]

After a year working on the film adaptation of ''Dune'', and following the sudden death of his brother Frank, Scott signed to direct the film version of Philip K. Dick's novel ''Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?''. Starring Harrison Ford and featuring an acclaimed soundtrack by Vangelis, ''Blade Runner'' was a disappointment in theatres in 1982 and was pulled shortly thereafter. Scott's notes were used by Warner Brothers to create a rushed director's cut in 1991 which removed the voiceovers and modified the ending. Scott personally supervised a digital restoration of ''Blade Runner'' and approved the ''Final Cut''. This version was released in Los Angeles, New York, and Toronto cinemas on 5 October 2007, and as an elaborate DVD release on 18 December 2007. Today, ''Blade Runner'' is often ranked by critics as one of the most important and influential science fiction films of the 20th century and is usually discussed along with William Gibson's novel ''Neuromancer'' as initiating the cyberpunk genre. Scott regards ''Blade Runner'' as his "most complete and personal film".

"1984" Apple Macintosh commercial[link]

In 1984 Scott directed the television commercial ''1984'', written by Steve Hayden and Lee Clow, produced by Chiat\Day, and starring Anya Major as the unnamed heroine and David Graham as "Big Brother". It was released for a single airing in the United States on 22 January 1984 during the third quarter of Super Bowl XVIII. It introduced the Macintosh for the first time and is now considered a "watershed event" and a "masterpiece".

''1984'' used the unnamed heroine to represent the coming of the Macintosh (indicated by her white tank top with a Picasso-style picture of Apple’s Macintosh computer on it) as a means of saving humanity from "conformity" (Big Brother).

These images were an allusion to George Orwell's noted novel, ''Nineteen Eighty-Four'', which described a dystopian future ruled by a supposedly fictional "Big Brother".

''Legend''[link]

In 1985 Scott directed ''Legend'', a fantasy film produced by Arnon Milchan. Having not tackled the fairy tale genre, Scott decided to create a "once upon a time" film set in a world of fairies, princesses, and goblins. Scott cast Tom Cruise as the film's hero, Jack, Mia Sara as Princess Lily, and Tim Curry as the Satan-horned Lord of Darkness. A series of problems with both principal photography, including the destruction of the forest set by fire, and post-production (including heavy editing and substitution of Jerry Goldsmith's original score with a score by Tangerine Dream) hampered the film's release. ''Legend'' received scathing reviews.

1987–92[link]

Scott made ''Someone to Watch Over Me'', a romantic police drama starring Tom Berenger, Lorraine Bracco and Mimi Rogers in 1987, and ''Black Rain'', a 1989 cop drama starring Michael Douglas and Andy García, shot partially in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan. Both achieved mild success at the box office.

''Thelma & Louise'' (1991) starring Geena Davis as Thelma, and Susan Sarandon as Louise, was successful, and revived Scott's reputation. However, his next project—an independent movie, ''1492: Conquest of Paradise''—was less successful. It is a visually striking film telling the story of Christopher Columbus. However, it was a box office failure, and Scott did not release another film for four years.

Recent career[link]

In 1995, with his brother Tony, Scott formed the film and television production company, Scott Free Productions in Los Angeles. All his subsequent feature films, starting with ''White Squall'' and ''G.I. Jane'', starring Demi Moore and Viggo Mortensen, were produced under the Scott Free banner. Also in 1995 the two brothers purchased controlling interest in Shepperton Studios, which later merged with Pinewood Studios. Scott and his brother have produced the CBS series ''Numb3rs'' (2005–2010), a crime drama about a genius mathematician who helps the FBI solve crimes, and ''The Good Wife'' (2009–), a legal drama concerning an attorney continuing her law practice while coping with her husband, a former state attorney trying to rebuild his political career after a major scandal.

2000–2005[link]

The huge success of Scott's film ''Gladiator'' (2000) has been credited with reviving the nearly defunct "sword and sandal" historical genre. Scott then turned to ''Hannibal'' (2001), the sequel to Jonathan Demme's ''The Silence of the Lambs''. In 2002, Scott released the war film, ''Black Hawk Down'', which further established his position as a critically and financially successful film maker. The film won two Oscars.

In 2003 Scott directed ''Matchstick Men'', adapted from the novel by Eric Garcia and starring Nicolas Cage, Sam Rockwell and Alison Lohman. It received mostly positive reviews and performed moderately at the box office. In 2005 he made the modestly successful ''Kingdom of Heaven'', a movie about the Crusades which consciously sought to connect history to current events. The Moroccan government sent the Moroccan cavalry as extras in the epic battle scenes.

Unhappy with the theatrical version of the film (which he blamed on paying too much attention to the opinions of preview audiences), Scott supervised a director's cut of ''Kingdom of Heaven'', which was released on DVD in 2006. In an interview to promote the latter, when asked if he was against previewing in general, Scott stated: "It depends who's in the driving seat. If you've got a lunatic doing my job, then you need to preview. But a good director should be experienced enough to judge what he thinks is the correct version to go out into the cinema."

2006–present[link]

Scott teamed up again with ''Gladiator'' star Russell Crowe, directing the movie ''A Good Year'', based on the best-selling book. The film was released on 10 November 2006, with a score by Marc Streitenfeld. Rupert Murdoch, chairman of News Corp and Subsidiary studio 20th Century Fox (who backed the film) dismissed ''A Good Year'' as "a flop" at a shareholders' meeting only a few days after the film's release.

Scott's next directorial work was on ''American Gangster'', the story of real-life drug kingpin Frank Lucas. He was the third director to attempt the project after Antoine Fuqua and Terry George. Denzel Washington and Benicio del Toro had been cast in the initial Steven Zaillian-scripted project under the working title ''Tru Blu'', both actors having been paid salaries of $20 m and $15 m respectively without doing any production on the film. Following George's departure, Scott took over the project in early 2006. He had Zaillian rewrite the script to focus on the dynamic between Frank Lucas and Richie Roberts. Washington signed back on to the project as Lucas, and Crowe signed on to play Roberts. The film finally premiered in November 2007 to positive reviews and good box office. In late 2008 Scott released the espionage thriller ''Body of Lies'' starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Crowe once again which opened to luke-warm ticket-sales and mixed reviews.

Scott directed an adaptation of Robin Hood titled ''Robin Hood'', which starred Russell Crowe as Robin Hood and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, and which was released on 13 May 2010 in Australia and 14 May 2010 in America. The film also starred Max von Sydow and Mark Strong.

Scott and his brother Tony produced the film adaptation of the 1980s TV cult classic ''The A-Team'', which was directed by Joe Carnahan and released on 11 June 2010.

On 31 July 2009, news surfaced of a two part prequel to ''Alien'', developed by 20th Century Fox. with Scott attached to direct.. The project, ultimately reduced to a single film called ''Prometheus'', which Scott describes as sharing "strands of Alien's DNA" while not being a direct prequel, is scheduled for release in June 2012.

On 6 July 2010, YouTube announced the launch of ''Life In A Day'', an experimental documentary that was to be executive produced by Scott. Released at the Sundance Film Festival on 27 January 2011, it incorporates footage shot on 24 July 2010 that was submitted by YouTube users from around the world.

Planned projects[link]

In April 2008, Scott announced his new project, ''The Kind One'', a period drama set for release in 2012. The film will star recent Academy Award nominee Casey Affleck. It is based on the novel of the same name by screenwriter Tom Epperson.

On 12 October 2008, Scott confirmed that after a 25 year wait for the rights to become available, he is making a return to science fiction with a film adaptation of the book ''The Forever War'' by Joe Haldeman. He was looking for a script writer. In March 2009, Scott confirmed that the film would be in 3D citing James Cameron's ''Avatar'' as an inspiration for doing so. "I'm filming a book by Joe Haldeman called ''Forever War''. I've got a good writer doing it. I've seen some of James Cameron's work, and I've got to go 3D. It's going to be phenomenal."

Another science fiction project to which Scott has been attached is an adaptation of Aldous Huxley's ''Brave New World'', with Leonardo DiCaprio also attached.

In August 2011, information leaked about production of a sequel to ''Blade Runner'' by Alcon Entertainment, with Alcon partners Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. Scott announced on 15 October 2009 that he will direct a film adaptation of the ''Red Riding'' trilogy.

As of 1 February 2012, Ridley Scott discussed a project based on a screenplay called ''The Counsellor'' by Cormac McCarthy with the producers of ''The Road'', Nick Wechsler and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz.

Personal life[link]

Ridley Scott was married to Felicity Heywood from 1964 to 1975. The couple had two sons, Jake and Luke, both of whom work as directors on Scott's production company Ridley Scott Associates. Scott later married advertising executive Sandy Watson in 1979, with whom he had a daughter, Jordan Scott, and divorced in 1989.

His current partner is the actress Giannina Facio, whom he has cast in all his movies since ''White Squall'' except ''American Gangster''. He divides his time between homes in London, France, and Los Angeles.

Approach and style[link]

Scott was not initially considered an actors' director , but has become more receptive to ideas from his cast as his career has developed. Examples include Susan Sarandon's suggestions that the character of Louise pack shoes in plastic bags in one scene of ''Thelma & Louise'', and another where her character exchanges jewelry for a hat and other items— and Tim Robbins' collaboration with Scott and Susan Sarandon to rework the final scene with a more upbeat ending. Russell Crowe commented, "I like being on Ridley's set because actors can perform [...] and the focus is on the performers." Paul M. Sammon, in his book ''Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner'', commented in an interview with Brmovie.com that Scott's relationship with his actors has improved considerably over the years. More recently during the filming of Scott's 2012 film, ''Prometheus'', Charlize Theron praised the director's willingness to listen to suggestions from the cast for improvements in the way their characters are portrayed on script. Theron worked alongside the writers and Scott to give more depth to her character during filming.

On the other hand, he can be a demanding and difficult director to work for. He was nicknamed "Guvnor" in the ''Blade Runner'' production. Several crew members wore protest t-shirts with slogans such as "Yes Guvnor, my ass" and "Will Rogers never met Ridley Scott" in reference to Will Rogers' most famous quotation, "I never met a man I didn't like". This was mainly in response to the way that Scott directed his first American crew, which some considered too harsh.

His striking visual style, incorporating a detailed approach to production design and innovative, atmospheric lighting, has been influential on a subsequent generation of filmmakers — many of whom have imitated his style. Scott commonly uses slow pacing until the action sequences. Examples include ''Alien'' and ''Blade Runner''; the ''LA Times'' critic Sheila Benson, for example, would call the latter "Blade Crawler" "because it's so damn slow". Another technique he employs is use of sound or music to build tension, as heard in ''Alien'', with hissing steam, beeping computers and the noise of the machinery in the space ship.

Scott has developed a method for filming intricate shots as swiftly as possible:

"I like working, always, with a minimum of three cameras. [...] So those 50 set-ups [a day] might only be 25 set-ups except I'm covering in the set-up. So you're finished. I mean, if you take a little bit more time to prep on three cameras, or if it's a big stunt, eleven cameras, and — whilst it may take 45 minutes to set up — then when you're ready you say 'Action!', and you do three takes, two takes and is everybody happy? You say, 'Yeah, that's it.' So you move on."

Although Scott is often known for his painterly directorial style, other techniques and elements include:

Strong female characters.

Some of his movies feature strong conflicts between father and son that usually end with the latter killing the former (''Blade Runner'', ''Gladiator'') or witnessing the event (''Kingdom of Heaven'', ''Robin Hood''). The Lord of Darkness in ''Legend'' also mentions his "father" on a few occasions. As part of the conflict between father and son there are some repetitive scenes: in ''Gladiator'', the son hugs the father seemingly as an expression of love but this embrace turns into the suffocation and death of the father. There is a similar sequence in ''Blade Runner''.

Scott utilises cityscapes as an emphasis to his storytelling (i.e., a futuristic Los Angeles in ''Blade Runner'', Tokyo in ''Black Rain'', Jerusalem in ''Kingdom of Heaven'').

In ''Gladiator'', ''Blade Runner'' and ''Kingdom of Heaven'', a son gets to know his father when he is grown up. Other common elements are that the mother is not seen, and that the son or father is seen performing his last actions. For example, Roy Batty is dying when he saves Deckard, Maximus dies after killing Commodus and Godfrey of Ibelin kills some enemies after he has been mortally wounded by an arrow. In addition, the hero is saved from death before attaining his greatest deeds: Deckard is saved by Rachel, Maximus is saved by a slave and Balian is saved by a Muslim enemy. Similar situations can be seen in Tony Scott's ''Man on Fire''.

Military and officer classes as characters reflecting his father's career, such as in ''G.I. Jane'' and ''Black Hawk Down'' and ''Kingdom of Heaven''.

Storyboarding his films extensively. These illustrations, when made by himself, have been referred to as "Ridleygrams" in DVD releases.

Scott was once known for requesting a great many takes. This was evident on ''Blade Runner'': the crew nicknamed the movie "Blood Runner" because of this.

He often makes use of classical music (the Hovis advertisements, ''Someone to Watch Over Me'').

Extensive use of smoke and other atmospheres (in ''Alien'', ''Blade Runner'' and ''Black Rain''), plus fans and fan-like objects (''Blade Runner'', ''Black Rain'' and the large Boeing jet engines in the ''1984'' TV advertisement). Fans are also used in ''Hannibal'', for symbolic purposes.

Consistency in his choice of composers, using Jerry Goldsmith (''Alien'' and ''Legend''), Vangelis (''Blade Runner'' and ''1492: Conquest of Paradise''), Hans Zimmer (''Black Rain'', ''Thelma & Louise'', ''Gladiator'', ''Hannibal'', ''Black Hawk Down'' and ''Matchstick Men'') or Marc Streitenfeld (''A Good Year'', ''American Gangster'', ''Body of Lies'', ''Robin Hood'' and ''Prometheus''). Scott has also twice used songs by Sting during the film credits ("Valparaiso" for ''White Squall'' and "Someone to Watch Over Me" for the movie of the same title).

DVD format and director's cut[link]

Scott is known for his enthusiasm for the DVD format, providing audio commentaries and interviews for all his films where possible. In the July 2006 issue of ''Total Film'' magazine, he stated: "After all the work we go through, to have it run in the cinema and then disappear forever is a great pity. To give the film added life is really cool for both those who missed it and those who really loved it."

Running alongside his enthusiasm for DVD, Scott is sometimes considered the "father" of the director's cut, though the impetus to produce such versions has sometimes begun with other parties. The positive reaction to the ''Blade Runner'' Director's Cut encouraged Scott to re-cut several movies that were a disappointment at the time of their release (including ''Legend'' and ''Kingdom of Heaven''). Today the practice of alternative cuts is more commonplace, though often as a way to make a film stand out in the DVD marketplace by adding new material.

Owen John "Terry" Scott (4 May 1927 - 26 July 1994) was an English actor and comedian who appeared in seven ''Carry On films''. He also appeared in BBC1's popular domestic sitcom ''Terry and June'' with June Whitfield. As a regular comedy performer, he went on to become one of Britain's top stars.

Scott was born and raised in Watford and educated at Watford Field Junior School and Watford Grammar School for Boys. He was the youngest of his parents three children, and the only surviving son after his brother Aubrey died when Scott was six. He studied accounting and served in the Navy during World War II. With Bill Maynard he appeared at Butlin's Holiday Camp in Skegness and partnered him in the TV series ''Great Scott, It's Maynard!''. During the early 1960s, he became well known to television audiences for his role alongside Hugh Lloyd in ''Hugh and I''. Scott later appeared with Lloyd as gnomes in the 1969 sitcom ''The Gnomes of Dulwich''.

Scott is best remembered for starring alongside June Whitfield in several series of the comedy ''Happy Ever After'' and its successor, ''Terry and June''. They also starred together in the film version of ''Bless This House''.

Scott had played a small role in the very first of the ''Carry On'' series of films, ''Carry On Sergeant'' in 1958. In 1968 he returned to the series with a role in ''Carry On Up the Khyber'' (1968), playing main roles in six of the films.

In the 1970s, he had a memorable role in TV commercials for a chocolate coated caramel bar called Curly Wurly, in which he appeared dressed as a schoolboy, complete with short trousers and cap.

Scott's novelty record "My Brother" (written by Mitch Murray, released 1962 on PYE) was based on this schoolboy character (he dressed in the uniform to sing it on TV) and received regular airplay on BBC Radio (in particular Ed 'Stewpot' Stewart's Saturday and Sunday morning programme ''Junior Choice'' which was simultaneous broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and 2) for many years. Despite this, it failed to enter the charts. In the 1980s, Scott was the voice of Penfold the hamster in the animated series ''Danger Mouse''.

Scott married dancer Margaret Pollen in 1957 and they had four daughters: Sarah, Nicola, Lindsay and Sally.

Scott suffered from ill health for many years. In 1979, he had a life-saving operation after a haemorrhage. He also suffered from creeping paralysis and had to wear a neck brace, even on television. When ''Terry and June'' was axed in 1987, Scott suffered a nervous breakdown. The attack was in part brought on by his public confession that he had had a series of affairs during his marriage to Pollen.

Scott was also diagnosed with cancer in 1987. He died from the cancer he had for 7 years at the family home in Witley near Godalming in Surrey, on 26 July 1994, aged 67.

Characteristically he said of his last illness: "I know it would be better to give up the booze, fags and birds, but life would be so boring wouldn't it."

Rapace was born in Hudiksvall. Her mother, Nina Norén (b. 1954), is a Swedish actress, and her father, Rogelio Durán (1953–2006), was a Spanish cantaor (Flamenco singer) from Badajoz. She has said that her father may have been of part Roma descent, and though she is "not sure if it is true," she has "always been interested in the culture." Rapace's sister, Særún Norén, is a photographer. Rapace has said that she saw her father only occasionally before his death. At the age of five, she moved from Sweden to Flúðir, Iceland, with her mother and stepfather. At the age of seven she made her film debut in the Icelandic film ''In the Shadow of the Raven'' playing a minor role.

At the age of seven, Rapace was given a non-speaking part in the film ''Í skugga hrafnsins'' by Hrafn Gunnlaugsson. This experience made her decide to be an actress. She left home at the age of fifteen and enrolled in a Stockholm theatre school. In 1996, she made her television début playing the part of Lucinda Gonzales in the series ''Tre kronor''. From 1998 to 1999, Rapace studied at Skara Skolscen. She has been engaged at Theater Plaza 2000–2001, Orionteatern 2001, Teater Galeasen 2002, Stockholms stadsteater in 2003 as well as at the Royal Dramatic Theatre.

In 2007, Noomi Rapace drew acclaim for her award-winning portrayal of a troubled teen mother in the Danish film Daisy Diamond, directed by Simon Staho. She won the two top film awards in Denmark (the Bodil and Robert prize) for Best Actress for her role in the film, which was also selected for the main competition at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. The film was critizied for the abuse a baby actor was subjegated to during production.

In 2009 she played the role of Lisbeth Salander in the film adaptation of the best-selling novel ''The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo''. She reprised her role in the sequels ''The Girl Who Played with Fire'' and ''The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest''. Since her breakthrough role in ''The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'', Rapace has been in high demand in Hollywood, and she was rumored to have read for or tested for roles in ''Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol'', ''Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters'', ''This Means War'' and ''The Raven''. On September 11, 2010, Entertainment Weekly reported that Rapace had been cast in ''Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows'', her first English-speaking role, as a French Gypsy; the film was released in 2011. She has also been cast in a leading role in the 2012 Ridley Scott film ''Prometheus''.

Michael Fassbender (born 2 April 1977) is an Irish-German actor. He is perhaps best known for having played Lieutenant Archie Hicox in the war film ''Inglourious Basterds'' (2009), Magneto in the superhero film ''X-Men: First Class'' (2011), and the android David in the science fiction film ''Prometheus''.

His other credits include the fantasy action film ''300'' (2007); the drama film ''Fish Tank'' (2009); the romantic drama film ''Jane Eyre'' (2011); the historical film ''A Dangerous Method'' (2011), directed by David Cronenberg, in which he plays psychologist Carl Jung; as well as the biographical film ''Hunger'' (2008) and the drama film ''Shame'' (2011), both directed by Steve McQueen. For his role in ''Shame'', he won the Volpi Cup best-actor award at the 68th Venice International Film Festival held in August 2011 along with being nominated for a Golden Globe Award and BAFTA.

Early life and education[link]

Fassbender was born in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, West Germany (now Germany). His mother is from Larne, County Antrim in Northern Ireland, and his father, Josef Fassbender, is German. According to Fassbender's "family lore", his mother is the great-great-niece of Michael Collins, an Irish leader during the War of Independence. When he was two years old, his parents moved to Killarney, County Kerry, in the Republic of Ireland, where they ran the West End House, a restaurant where his father worked as a chef. Fassbender was brought up as a Roman Catholic and served as an altar boy.

He attended St. Brendan's, Killarney (The Sem) and the Drama Centre London.

Early work[link]

Fassbender first played the part of Burton "Pat" Christenson in Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg's award-winning television miniseries ''Band of Brothers''. He played the character of Azazeal in both series of ''Hex'' on Sky One and he also starred as the main character in the music video for the song "Blind Pilots", by the British band The Cooper Temple Clause. In the video, he plays the part of a man on a stag night with his friends, only to slowly transform into a goat due to wearing a cowbell necklace.

Fassbender played the part of Jonathan Harker in a ten-part radio serialization of ''Dracula'' produced by BBC Northern Ireland and broadcast in the ''Book at Bedtime'' series between 24 November and 5 December 2003. He was also seen in early 2004 in a Guinness television commercial, ''The Quarrel'', playing a man who swims across the ocean from Ireland to apologize personally to his brother in New York.

During the 2006 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Fassbender played Michael Collins in ''Allegiance'', a play by Mary Kenny based on the meeting between Winston Churchill and Collins, of whom Fassbender's mother is a great-niece. In addition, he produced, directed and starred in the stage version of Quentin Tarantino's ''Reservoir Dogs'', along with his production company.

He appeared in ''Angel'' (UK title: ''The Real Life of Angel Deverell''), about the rise and fall of an eccentric young British writer (played by Romola Garai) in the early 20th century. Fassbender plays her love interest and average painter Esmé. The drama – the first English-language effort by French director François Ozon and based on the novel by Elizabeth Taylor – premiered on 17 February 2007 at the Berlin International Film Festival and on 14 March 2007 in Paris. He then made a brief appearance in ''Wedding Belles'' as Barney, speaking with a Scottish accent.

Mainstream success[link]

In 2006, Fassbender played the role of Stelios, a young Spartan warrior, in ''300'', a fantasy action film directed by Zack Snyder. The film was a commercial success.

In preparation for his role as Provisional Irish Republican Army prisoner Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen's 2008 film ''Hunger'', Fassbender underwent a crash diet that restricted him to 600 calories a day. He received the British Independent Film Award for his performance.

One year after his success at the Cannes Film Festival with ''Hunger'', he appeared in two films. The first was Quentin Tarantino's ''Inglourious Basterds'', in which he played the British officer Lieutenant Archie Hicox. The other film was ''Fish Tank'' directed by Andrea Arnold. Both films were critically acclaimed and Fassbender's work in them also well received.

In 2010, Fassbender appeared as Burke in ''Jonah Hex'', a Western film. In an interview at San Diego Comic-Con International, a comic book convention, Fassbender commented of the role: "I kind of developed this character and really pushed it – I’ll see how far I pushed it ... I had this idea about the character, he’s kind of psychotic, he gets his kicks in perverted ways. I didn’t want to make it very obvious or like something you’ve seen before". Hex received predominately negative reviews. Responding to criticism of Jonah Hex in 2011, Fassbender commented: "Pretty awful, was it? I haven't seen it myself."

He also portrayed Quintus Dias in Neil Marshall's war-thriller-drama film ''Centurion''. and was cast as 'Richard Wirth' in the Joel Schumacher film ''Blood Creek'' alongside Dominic Purcell. The story centers on a West Virginia man who comes to terms with his moral qualms and helps his brother wipe out a family that had been protecting a Nazi occultist and who had kept his brother captive for him to feed off for years.

Fassbender played Edward Rochester in the 2011 film ''Jane Eyre'', featuring Mia Wasikowska in the title role, with Cary Fukunaga directing.

Fassbender portrayed Magneto in the superhero blockbuster ''X-Men: First Class'', the prequel to ''X-Men''. Set in 1962, it focuses on the friendship between Charles Xavier (played by James McAvoy) and Magneto and the origin of their groups, the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. The film was released on 3 June 2011 to general acclaim and financial success and promoted Fassbender to being more of a popular movie star.

In 2011, Fassbender starred in ''A Dangerous Method'' by director David Cronenberg, playing Swiss psychiatrist and psychologist Carl Jung. The film premiered at the 2011 Venice Film Festival. He also starred in ''Shame'', as a man in his thirties struggling with his sex addiction. ''Shame'' reunited him with director Steve McQueen and premiered at the 2011 Venice Film Festival, where Fassbender won a Volpi Cup best actor award for his portrayal of Brandon. Fassbender was a serious contender for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, but he was not nominated, and according to various sources his full-frontal nudity and depiction of sexual encounters inspired voters "to fantasize, and not actually vote." Fassbender achieved critical acclaim for his performance in ''Shame'' and received nominations for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama and a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

In 2012, he appeared in ''Haywire'', an action-thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Future projects[link]

Due to a schedule conflict, Fassbender had to pull out of negotiations to work with Oscar-winning director, Danny Boyle, in his new film, ''Trance''.

Fassbender signed to star in actor Brendan Gleeson's directorial debut of ''At Swim-Two-Birds'', a film adaptation of Irish author Flann O'Brien's novel. He will also team up for a third time with McQueen to co-star in a yet-to-be-determined role, with Chiwetel Ejiofor, portraying Solomon Northup, in ''Twelve Years A Slave'', filming to commence in late summer of 2012.

Together with a screenwriter Ronan Bennett, Fassbender formed a production company Finn McCool Films. Fassbender and Bennett are currently developing a film about the Irish mythological hero Cú Chulainn.

In February, Fassbender signed on to play a title role as a lawyer in ''The Counselor'', a film directed by Ridley Scott and based on the Cormac McCarthy script, filming is to start in mid-June.

He is also going to play Thomas Wolfe in a movie ''Genius'' about a famous literary editor Max Perkins, to be played by Colin Firth.

In 2013, Fassbender is set to take on the role of Harry Flashman in a film adaptation of the books by George MacDonald Fraser.

Shifting between British films and American films, Fassbender resides in London, England where he has lived for the last 15 years, while making career-related visits to Los Angeles, California.

He speaks conversational German, though he has stated that he needed to brush up a bit on his spoken German before filming ''Inglourious Basterds'', as it was a bit rusty. He has also expressed interest in performing in a German-language film or theater production one day.

Fassbender is currently dating his ''Shame'' costar Nicole Beharie.

Charlize Theron (American English pronunciation: ; Afrikaans pronunciation: ; born 7 August 1975) is a South African actress and fashion model. She started her acting career in the United States and rose to fame in the late 1990s following roles in ''The Devil's Advocate'' (1997), ''Mighty Joe Young'' (1998), and ''The Cider House Rules'' (1999). Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in ''Monster'' (2003), becoming the first African to win an Academy Award in a major acting category. She received another Academy Award nomination for her performance in ''North Country'' (2005). Theron became a US citizen in 2007, while retaining her South African citizenship.

Early life[link]

Theron was born in Benoni, in the then Transvaal Province of South Africa, the only child of Gerda (née Maritz; who has also called herself Gerta) and Charles Theron (born 27 November 1947). Second Boer War figure Danie Theron was her great-great-uncle. Her ancestry includes French, German, and Dutch; her French forebears were early Huguenot settlers in South Africa. "Theron" is an Occitan surname (originally spelled Théron) pronounced in Afrikaans as , although she has said that the way she pronounces it in South Africa is [θron]. She changed the pronunciation when she moved to the U.S. to give it a more "American" sound.

She grew up on her parents' farm in Benoni, near Johannesburg. Her father died on 21 June 1991, after he was shot by Theron's mother. Theron's father, an alcoholic, physically attacked her mother and threatened both women while drunk. The shooting was legally adjudged to have been self-defense and her mother faced no charges.

Theron attended Putfontein Primary School (Laerskool Putfontein), a period she later characterised as not "fitting in". At 13, Theron was sent to boarding school and began her studies at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg. Although Theron became fluent in English (which she speaks with a General American accent) around age nineteen, her first language is Afrikaans.

Career[link]

Though seeing herself as a dancer, Theron at 16 won a one-year modeling contract at a local competition in Salerno , and with her mother moved to Milan, Italy. After Theron spent a year modeling throughout Europe, she and her mother moved to New York City and Miami, Florida. In New York, she attended the Joffrey Ballet School, where she trained as a ballet dancer until a knee injury closed this career path at 19. As Theron recalled in 2008,

Intending now to work in movies, Theron flew to Los Angeles, California, on a one-way ticket her mother bought her. During her early months there, she went to a Hollywood Boulevard bank to cash a cheque her mother had sent her to help with the rent. When the teller refused to cash it, Theron engaged in a shouting match with her. Upon seeing this, talent agent John Crosby, in line behind her, handed her his business card and subsequently introduced her to casting agents and also an acting school. She later fired him as her manager after he kept sending her scripts for films similar to ''Showgirls'' and ''Species''. After several months in the city, she was cast in her first film part, a non-speaking role in the direct-to-video film ''Children of the Corn III'' (1995). Her first speaking role was a supporting but significant part in ''2 Days in the Valley''. Larger roles in widely released Hollywood films followed, and her career expanded in the late 1990s with box-office successes like ''The Devil's Advocate'' (1997), ''Mighty Joe Young'' (1998), and ''The Cider House Rules'' (1999). She was on the cover of the January 1999 issue of ''Vanity Fair'' as the "White Hot Venus". AskMen named her the number one most desirable woman of 2003.

After appearing in other films, Theron starred as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in ''Monster'' (2003). Film critic Roger Ebert called it "one of the greatest performances in the history of the cinema". For this role, Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress at the 76th Academy Awards in February 2004, as well as the SAG Award and the Golden Globe Award. She is the first South African to win an Oscar for Best Actress. The Oscar win pushed her to ''The Hollywood Reporter's'' 2006 list of highest-paid actresses in Hollywood; earning US$10 million for both her subsequent films, ''North Country'' and ''Æon Flux'', she ranked seventh, behind Halle Berry, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Renée Zellweger, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.

In 2005 Theron portrayed Rita, Michael Bluth's (Jason Bateman) love interest, on the third season of Fox's critically acclaimed television series ''Arrested Development''. She also received Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for her role of Britt Ekland in the 2004 HBO film ''The Life and Death of Peter Sellers''. On 30 September, Theron received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the same year, she starred in the financially unsuccessful science fiction thriller ''Æon Flux''. She also received the 2005 Spike Video Game Award for Best Performance by a Human Female for her voiceover work in the Æon Flux video game.

Theron received Best Actress Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for her lead performance in the drama ''North Country''. ''Ms.'' magazine also honoured her for this performance with a feature article in its Fall 2005 issue. She was supposed to star in the screen adaption of the short story ''The Ice at the Bottom of the World'' by Mark Richard, and it was to be directed by Kimberly Peirce and produced by Theron's company Denver and Delilah Films (Theron's two dog's names). Theron has owned the rights for many years. She was also supposed to star in a movie adaption of the graphic novel ''Jinx'', but both projects have not been produced as of yet.

In 2008, Theron was named the Hasty Pudding Theatricals Woman of the Year. That year she also starred with Will Smith in the superhero film ''Hancock'', and in late 2008 she was asked to be a UN Messenger of Peace by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

In October 2009, Theron was cast to star in a sequel to the ''Mad Max'' films, titled ''Mad Max: Fury Road''.

On 4 December 2009, Theron co-presented the draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, accompanied by several other celebrities of South African origin. During rehearsals she drew an Ireland ball instead of France as a joke at the expense of FIFA, referring to Thierry Henry's handball controversy in the play off match between France and Ireland. The stunt alarmed FIFA enough for it to fear she might do it again in front of a live global audience.

Following a three-year hiatus from the big screen, Theron returned to the spotlight in 2011 with ''Young Adult''. Directed by Jason Reitman, the film earned critical acclaim especially for Theron's performance. She was nominated for a Golden Globe and several other high profile awards.

Personal life[link]

Theron has a son, Jackson, whose adoption was announced in March 2012. She lives in Los Angeles, California. Theron became a naturalised citizen of the United States in May 2007, while retaining her South African citizenship.

In the mid-1990s, Theron had a two-year relationship with actor Craig Bierko. From 1997 to 2001, she dated Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins. Theron then began a relationship with Irish actor Stuart Townsend, with whom she starred in ''Trapped'' (2002) and ''Head in the Clouds'' (2004). Theron and Townsend separated in January 2010 after nearly nine years together.

Health concerns[link]

While filming ''Æon Flux'' in Berlin, Germany, Theron suffered a herniated disc in her neck, which occurred as a result of her suffering a fall while filming a series of back handsprings. This required her to wear a neck collar for a month. In July 2009, Theron was diagnosed with a serious stomach virus, thought to be contracted while travelling outside the United States. She was hospitalised at Cedars-Sinai Hospital and she finished convalescing in her own home. When filming ''The Road,'' Theron injured her vocal cords during the labor screaming scenes.

Having signed a deal with John Galliano in 2004, Theron replaced Estonian model Tiiu Kuik as the spokeswoman in the "J'adore" advertisements by Christian Dior.

From October 2005 to December 2006, Theron earned US$3 million for the use of her image in a worldwide print media advertising campaign for Raymond Weil watches. In February 2006, she and her loan-out corporation were sued by Weil for breach of contract. The lawsuit was settled on 4 November 2008.

Activism[link]

Theron is involved in women's rights organisations, and has marched in pro-choice rallies.

Theron also is a supporter of animal rights and active member of PETA. She appeared in a PETA ad for its anti-fur campaign. She is a supporter of marriage equality and attended a march to support that in Fresno, California, on 30 May 2009.

In July 2009, Theron's Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) announced a coalition with LAFC Soccer Club to give soccer fields to rural areas in South Africa. The US youth soccer club LAFC Chelsea made a three-year commitment to help build a community-wide soccer program for the schools in the Umkhanyakude district, encompassing uniforms, equipment, professional training for local coaches, referees and administrators, and health education.

In December 2009, CTAOP and TOMS Shoes partnered to create a limited edition unisex shoe. The shoe was made from vegan materials and inspired by the African baobab tree, the silhouette of which was embroidered on blue and orange canvas. Ten-thousand pairs were given to destitute children, and a portion of the proceeds went to CTAOP.
