ITV2 is a 24 hour, free-to-air entertainment television channel in the United Kingdom and the Channel Islands owned by ITV Digital Channels Ltd, a division of ITV plc.^[1] It was launched on 7 December 1998 and is available digitally via satellite, cable, IPTV and terrestrial (Freeview) platforms. For a number of years it had the largest audience share after the five analogue terrestrial stations, a claim now held by its sister service ITV3^[2] both of which are freely available to a majority of households.

The channel is known for American programming such as Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries; repeats of recently aired episodes of soap operas and other entertainment programming from ITV1 such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale; spin-off shows such as The Xtra Factor and Britain's Got More Talent, and original programming such as Celebrity Juice and The Only Way Is Essex.

Background[link]

In the period between the launch of Independent Television in the 1950's and the start of Channel 4 and S4C in 1982, the term 'ITV2' was popularly used to refer to an envisioned second UK commercial television network.

Plans for independent television to consist of two or more channels in a given area were first discussed during its inception, where ways of allowing the composite companies to compete directly with one another were considered. When the first broadcasts went on air in 1955 there was not enough frequency space allocated for television, leading to the approach whereby each competing company was allotted a part of the country (or in the larger areas a period of the week, weekdays or weekend). This arrangement was not seen as ideal and the Independent Television Authority (ITA) along with the franchisees continually pushed the government for capacity to license a second set of franchises.^[3]

When transmissions began on UHF in the early 1960s, the General Post Office (GPO) were afforded the task of allocating each transmitter region with a set of frequencies that would provide maximum coverage and minimal interference; this provided capacity for four services, allowing one each for the existing BBC and ITV services (already carried on VHF), one for the new BBC2 and a fourth for future allocation. By 1968 the ITA considered this sufficiently likely that when awarding franchises for the next ten year period they included a clause that allowed the licence to be revoked and reconsidered if 'ITV2' became a reality.

The issue was a sensitive political point: The Labour Party of the 1950s and 1960s had traditionally been against commercial television and many on the left of the party wanted to see all commercial television abolished, advocating instead for an expansion of BBC Television (which was not acted upon, most likely due to cost). The following Conservative government, and advocates of commercial broadcasting, were also slow to act in implementing a new network after coming to power in 1970, instead concentrating on Independent Local Radio. Moves began to be made towards the end of the 1970s on the form such a fourth service would take. By then, both major political parties roughly agreed that this new service ought to have some public service element to it and provide content to minority groups not necessarily catered for by the BBC or ITV proper. The resultant service, Channel 4, and a variant for Wales, S4C, began in 1982. It could be said that this service was the long-awaited 'ITV2' in all but name, as it was operated and regulated by the IBA, was (then) funded by the rest of ITV and (then) had a substantial amount of content produced by the ITV companies.

The term 'ITV2' became popular as the term 'ITV' itself grew in popularity for the commercial network which had previously been referred to by generic titles 'Independent Television' or 'Commercial Television'. In anticipation of the second network, it was not uncommon for television sets manufactured during the '60s and '70s to have buttons labelled 'ITV1' and 'ITV2'.

This name was not dead, however, and the concept of 'ITV2' resurfaced in the late 1990s for very different reasons. The launch of digital terrestrial television services in the UK saw each existing analogue terrestrial broadcaster given a slice of bandwidth with which to carry their existing service after analogue switch-off with space left over for new channels. Whilst strictly speaking this space belonged to each regional contractor for use within their own region, ITV had undergone a series of buy-outs earlier on in the decade, the three players operating the majority of the network, Granada, Carlton and United News & Media jointly launched ITV2 in 1998 to be broadcast to most of the country as a uniform service. Whilst free-to-air, it was marketed along-side their own subscription based ONdigital platform. Other ITV licensees, SMG, UTV and GMTV launched their own services in the space (see below).

While ITV2 is now a popular entertainment channel, at its launch in 1998 it was a mixed genre channel. Much of the original content in its launch schedule was current affairs related programming fronted by ITV newscasters. Katie Derham presented a weekly media programme called Wide Angle, John Suchet fronted a weekly current affairs discussion programme called Who, What, Why, and Trevor MacDonald presented an interview series, Trevor MacDonald Meets....^[4] Other programmes included omnibus editions of ITV soaps Emmerdale and Coronation Street, and a Saturday football results service.^[5]

It is important to consider the distinction between ITV2 as considered between 1955 and 1982 and the ITV2 that was launched in 1998. Like ITV itself, the former would have had a regional structure consisting of many companies competing head-to-head with their counterparts in each region, whilst the latter is operated by one organisation, as a supplement service to the main network.

In June 2004, ITV plc announced that they were going to double the channel's programme budget, and would add more US series and movies. On 1 November 2004, in an attempt to launch ITV3 on Sky, ITV2 moved from 175 to 118 on Sky after ITV plc bought GSkyB for £10millon. As a result, Granada Plus was permanently closed down, with its EPG slot taken by ITV3.

ITV plc launched a one hour timeshift channel of ITV2 on Monday, 30 October 2006. The company is looking to its digital channels to shore up revenues as the ITV Network suffers a decline in viewers. ITV3 +1 was launched on the same day.

ITV2 and its one-hour timeshift channel began broadcasting 24 hours a day on 17 March 2008.^[6]

From 11 January 2011, ITV2 +1 on the Freeview platform has changed its broadcasting hours to 7:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. On 1 June 2011, an additional hour was added in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland, allowing ITV2 +1 to start at 6:00 p.m. On 2 August 2011, ITV2 +1 began to broadcast 24 hours a day on Freeview across the UK, using an eleventh stream created on mux A.

As part of the changes, ITV2 +1 swapped slots on Sky's electronic programme guide with Men & Motors, resulting in the timeshift channel making a significant jump from channel 184 to 131. It is now Sky 179.

GMTV2 programming moved from ITV2 to ITV4. The strand continues to be simulcast on the CITV Channel.

On 20 August 2008, ITV2 unveiled a new look, the logo was given a 3D look, with three new idents.

ITV2 was launched on UPC Ireland in the Republic of Ireland on 4 January 2010, marking the first time the channel has been officially available in the country. The channel had already been (and remains) available to Irish viewers on free-to-air satellite for some time, however it is still not listed in the Sky electronic programme guide. On 1 April 2011, ITV2 was removed from UPC Ireland along with ITV3 and ITV4 due to the expiry of a carriage agreement between UPC and ITV.^[7] UPC Ireland claim that ITV is not in a position to renegotiate the deal because ITV had struck a deal with another channel provider to provide it with exclusive rights to air certain content from the channels. Conversely, UPC Ireland also claims to have been in discussions right up to the last moment in order to continue broadcasting the channels.^[8] ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 were restored to the UPC Ireland line-up on 20 December 2011. TV3 Ireland and its sister channel 3e already hold carriage agreement to air certain ITV content within the Republic of Ireland,^[9] alternatively UTV is available within the Republic. ITV2 won channel of the year at the Broadcast Digital Channel Awards 2007 on 9 June 2007,^[12] and on 25 August of the same year, ITV2 was named non-terrestrial channel of the year at the Edinburgh International Television Festival.^[13]

ITV2 HD[link]

ITV2 HD, a high-definition simulcast of ITV2, launched on 7 October 2010 on Sky channel 225.^[14][15] The channel is available through Sky's pay subscription in a non-exclusive deal,^[16] ITV has held talks with other providers including Virgin Media.^[17] Original HD programming includes entertainment shows, Britain's Got More Talent, The Xtra Factor and I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! NOW!; original drama such as the third and fourth series of Secret Diary of a Call Girl; and acquired content including The Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl and a range of movies.

S2[link]

S2 was a television station broadcast throughout the Scottish and Grampian ITV regions by SMG plc, the holder of the Scottish and Grampian region ITV franchises. S2, which aired on the Digital Terrestrial platform, was launched 30 April 1999 and closed just over two years later — as part of a deal with ITV Digital — on 27 July 2001.

By the end of its life, it had lost nearly all of its Scottish programmes and mainly simulcast ITV2, but covered the ITV2 graphic with an opaque S2 graphic.^[18] This caused controversy and forced the broadcaster further into removing the channel.

UTV2[link]

UTV2 was a television station broadcast by UTV Media plc on Digital Terrestrial Television in Northern Ireland. It was launched in 1999 as TV You. The programming consisted primarily of simulcasts with the ITV2 station shown in England, Wales and the Scottish Borders, although they did also use archive broadcasts from UTV. UTV2 closed on 22 January 2002 following a deal with ITV Digital and was replaced by ITV2.

Branding[link]

When the channel launched, the logo was very similar in style to the ITV1 logo at the time and ITV were worried the channel looked just like an extension of ITV1 and didn't offer anything new. It was soon after this that the channel received a complete overhaul along with the other ITV channels in 2006. The channel received a new lime green logo which was generally well received by viewers. Six New idents and general presentation were introduced as well as new programming. The lime green colour was chosen as ITV thought it had a young fresh feel to it. The colour has been used now since 2006. The six new idents all had names beginning with 'Too' to relate to the 2 in the channels name. They were called; "Too Fast", "Too Hot", "Too Cold, "Too Expensive", "Too Glamorous" and "Too Loud". Each of the idents were made up of a mix of shades of green to match the channels logo.

In 2008, the channel received another new look. The green logo was kept but edited. The channel now had a new 3D logo to try and make the channel look more modern and appealing to a younger audience. The new look was praised by many viewers. Six new idents were launched. Each ident had a unique but fresh look and feel to them and were well received.

During Newcastle United's run in the 2004–05 UEFA Cup, the channel was rebranded as ITV Toon on matchdays, referring to the club's nickname the Toon. The channel's yellow and blue idents changed to black and white, to match the club's colours. ^[19]

Kerry Jayne Elizabeth Katona (born 6 September 1980)^[1] is an English media personality and singer best known for her television work, predominantly in light entertainment and reality shows. She has also been a pop singer with girl group Atomic Kitten, a magazine columnist, an actress, and the author of ghostwritten books that include an autobiography and several novels. She has appeared in television commercials, notably for Iceland and Asda supermarkets. Katona was the runner-up of Celebrity Big Brother 2011.

Born in Warrington, England, Katona was brought up partly by her mother, Sue Katona, and partly by her stepfather, foster grandmother and others. Katona's surname is Hungarian. As a young girl, she was placed in care and brought up by four sets of foster parents.^[2] During that time, she attended eight different schools.^[2]

She left school at age sixteen to become a lap dancer. She then joined a dance troupe that toured Europe.^[3] She attempted to become a glamour model in her teens and posed for nude photographs. In 2001, some of these photographs resurfaced and were published in Britain by tabloid newspaper The Sunday Sport.^[4]

[edit] 1999–01: Atomic Kitten

In 1999, at the age of eighteen, Katona rose to fame as a member of all-female pop trio Atomic Kitten, which had been created by former Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark frontman Andy McCluskey alongside Heidi Range and Liz McClarnon. While Katona was in the group, Atomic Kitten only enjoyed limited success, having four top-twenty singles in Britain, and their debut album Right Now reached number 39 on the British album charts. Despite this, Cradle was a huge hit in Asia, reaching number one there. Katona left the group in January 2001 because she had become pregnant with the child of former Westlife member Brian McFadden, and also due to her dislike of travelling. Atomic Kitten's single "Whole Again" reached Number One in Britain days after her departure.^[5] Jenny Frost replaced Katona in the group.

[edit] 2004–present: Television career

After marrying McFadden and taking his surname, Katona moved into television work, appearing on and presenting a mix of light entertainment programmes such as Britain's Sexiest..., Loose Women, and Elimidate. In February 2004, she won the third series of the British reality TV show I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!. In July of that year, Katona and McFadden appeared as judges on the RTÉ talent show You're a Star, which was used to select the Republic of Ireland's Eurovision Song Contest entry. On separating from McFadden in September 2004 she reverted to her maiden name.

In July 2005, Katona starred in My Fair Kerry on ITV, where she was taught airs and graces to transform herself from ladette to lady. Also in 2005 she starred in an Irish drama called Showbands.^[6]

Between 2007 and 2009, Katona was the subject of three MTV reality shows: Kerry Katona: Crazy in Love, Kerry Katona: Whole Again, and Kerry Katona: What's the Problem? From a peak audience of 500,000 for Kerry Katona: Crazy in Love, viewership for Kerry Katona: What's the Problem?, a series about Katona's bipolar disorder, slumped to just 19,000. Katona was dropped by MTV in August 2009.

In late 2009, Katona attempted to become a contestant on Celebrity Big Brother 2010 but was rejected by the show's executives after she failed the required psychological tests.^[7]

Katona's latest reality show Kerry Coming Clean aired on 24 June 2010. Katona has been banned from using drugs or reuniting with Mark Croft as a part of her contract with management team Can Associates.^[8] The documentary covers the tribulations of Katona's separation from Croft and signing with Peter Andre's management company Can Associates. Katona also featured in two series of "Kerry Katona: The Next Chapter. She was later dropped from the company after a holiday she spent in Malaga partying. Katona was a contestant on Dancing on Ice Series 6 with English ice skater Daniel Whiston. They were eliminated in week 5 in a skate off against Jeff Brazier and partner Isabelle Gauthier.

Katona was the first housemate to enter the Big Brother House for the 2011 series of Celebrity Big Brother alongside Amy Childs and Tara Reid amongst others. She was voted the runner-up in the final after Paddy Doherty on the 8th of September 2011.

Other projects[link]

Formerly represented by publicist Max Clifford, with whom she parted by mutual agreement in October 2008,^[9] Katona has had endorsement deals with Iceland and Asda supermarkets. On 17 August 2009, Iceland released Katona from her £290,000 contract. The company stated that it was "impossible" to continue featuring Katona in its advertising campaigns after photographs appeared in the News Of The World tabloid, allegedly showing her taking cocaine in the bathroom of her home.^[10]

Katona has released an autobiography, Kerry Katona: Too Much, Too Young; a self-help book, Survive the Worst and Aim for the Best: How to Get Your Life Back on Track; and three novels, Tough Love, The Footballer's Wife, and Glamour Girl. All of her books have been ghostwritten. Until 2008, she wrote a regular column for OK! Magazine.

Katona is a patron of The Shannon Bradshaw Trust,^[11] a charity based in Warrington, which helps children with life-threatening conditions, and their families.

On 31 August 2001, Katona gave birth to Molly Marie McFadden, daughter of former Westlife star Brian McFadden. On 5 January 2002, the couple married at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Rathfeigh, County Meath, Republic of Ireland, with Katona's former Atomic Kitten colleague Natasha Hamilton as bridesmaid.^[12] The couple spent their honeymoon in Mauritius. Their second daughter, Lilly-Sue, was born on 3 February 2003.^{[citation needed]} The couple separated in September 2004 and their divorce was finalised in December 2006.^{[citation needed]}

On 14 February 2007, Katona married taxi driver Mark Croft in a private ceremony in Gretna Green, with two friends as witnesses.^[13] Six days later, on 20 February 2007, the couple's daughter Heidi Elizabeth Croft was delivered by Caesarean section at Macclesfield General Hospital. Six weeks premature, the baby weighed 5 lb (2,300 g).^[14]

On 15 July 2007, Katona and Croft were held hostage at their £1.5 million home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, along with their daughter Heidi. They reported that three men forcibly entered their home, one of whom held Katona at knife-point while the others forced Croft to show them where valuables were kept.^[15] Nobody was physically harmed, but the men left with a blue BMW and other valuables with an estimated total value between £100,000 – £150,000.^[16][17] On 19 July 2007, police found the undamaged car ten miles away on Reeves Road in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester.

On 19 July 2007, Katona was admitted to The Priory hospital^[18] suffering from bipolar disorder. Her publicist, Max Clifford, claimed she had suffered from the disorder for some time, but her symptoms were aggravated when armed robbers broke into her home.

Katona announced in late September 2007 that she was expecting her fourth child, her second with Croft. At one point, she feared that she had suffered a miscarriage^[19] but further examination found the foetus was still alive, and due in May 2008.^[20] On 30 December 2007 she announced that her fourth child would be a boy named Maxwell Mark, after Max Clifford and her husband Mark. Five weeks before the due date, and after two days of labour, she gave birth to a 5 lb 4 oz (2,400 g) baby on 11 April 2008, at 5.42 pm.^[21]

On 21 August 2008, Katona was declared bankrupt at the High Court in London after failing to pay the final £82,000 of a £417,000 tax bill.^[22][23] After losing her Iceland contract, her magazine column, and her MTV shows, Katona suffered further financial setbacks. In December 2009, she received a repossession order on her £1.5 million home, having not paid her mortgage in months.^[24]

On 13 March 2009, Katona's financial advisor Frank Cochran^[25] read a statement to the media stating that Katona and Croft had decided to divorce.^[26][27] On 16 March 2009, it was reported that Katona and Croft had reconciled.^[28]

On 27 August 2009, it was reported that Katona was under investigation by Cheshire Police after allegations she had assaulted her accountant, and for criminal damage and a public order offence. After being arrested and questioned, she was released on police bail until 12 October 2009, pending further enquiries.^[29]

In February 2010, the media reported that Katona had separated from Croft again after he accused her of becoming romantically involved with fitness instructor Kevin Green. Katona went on holiday to Tenerife with her youngest daughter after the split.^[30]

Katona has been criticised for smoking and drinking alcohol during her pregnancies. The Foundation for the Study of Infant Death (FSID) warned Katona that babies of smokers are up to fifteen times more likely to die from a cot death,^[31] and the British Heart Foundation also condemned Katona for smoking while pregnant.^[32] Katona defended her behaviour after these statements were made.^[33]

Appearing on 12 February 2008 edition of Channel 4's Richard & Judy show, Katona admitted that she had taken cocaine, but claimed that she had not taken any drugs for the past three years. She also claimed that the press was constantly making up stories about her and claimed that she was in the process of renewing her contract with Iceland.^[34]

When she appeared on 22 October 2008 live episode of ITV1's This Morning show, Katona's speech appeared to be slurred, prompting questions about her well-being.^[35] Katona later claimed her slurred speech was the result of having taken prescription drugs late the previous night. According to the presenters, she was angry at having been asked about it on air.^[36] In the same interview, when presenter Fern Britton asked whether her drug addiction had been replaced by an alcohol addiction, Katona rejected the suggestion.

In December 2010, Katona admitted to taking cocaine during her marriage to Croft.^[37]

Emily Herbert wrote a biography about Katona in September 2005 called Kerry: Story of a Survivor.

Katona released her own autobiography on 5 October 2006 titled Too Much, Too Young with ghostwriter Fanny Blake^[2] and Katona's mother who consented to have her story told as well.^[58]

In October 2007, Katona released her first novel. Tough Love (produced with the aid of a ghost-writer^[59]) follows the story of the Crompton family and was published by Ebury Press. A second ghostwritten novel, The Footballer's Wife, was published in 2008.

Nina Dobrev (born Nina Constantinova Dobreva; January 9, 1989)^[1] is a Bulgarian-born Canadian actress and model. She played the role of Mia Jones, the single teenage mother, on Degrassi: The Next Generation, from the show's sixth to ninth season. She currently stars as Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce on The CW television teen drama, The Vampire Diaries.

Nina Dobrev was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, and moved to Canada at the age of two, where she was raised in Toronto, Ontario. She speaks fluent French, English, and Bulgarian. She has an older brother, Alexander; her father is a computer specialist and her mother is an artist.^[1]

Dobrev attended J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School, where she started ballet and jazz classes, and competed in rhythmic gymnastic.^[1] Then, she attended and Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough, Ontario and Ryerson University in Toronto, majoring in sociology. She left in 2008 to pursue her acting career.^[2]

While working on the show, she began dating her Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder.^[3][4]

Modeling jobs led to commercials, which then turned into film auditions. Shortly thereafter, she booked roles in feature films, including Fugitive Pieces, Away from Her, Never Cry Werewolf, and the television series Degrassi: The Next Generation. She starred in a number of Lifetime original movies. She also was in an MTV movie called The American Mall on CTV. She is currently starring in The CW's drama The Vampire Diaries, playing the dual role of Katherine Pierce, a vampire loved by two human brothers during the American Civil War, and Katherine's doppelgänger Elena Gilbert, a human who is caught between the same two brothers, now vampires, Damon and Stefan Salvatore.^[5]

She also had a minor role in the erotic thriller Chloe, theatrically released by Sony Pictures Classics on March 26, 2010.^[6] The film had enjoyed commercial success and became director Atom Egoyan's biggest moneymaker ever.^[7]

In April 2011, she was cast as Candace in the film adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, alongside Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Paul Rudd.^[8] Shooting began in May of that year in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and she completed her scenes on June 27, 2011.^[9]

In September 2011, Dobrev co-hosted We Day alongside Joe Jonas.^[10] We Day is organized by Free the Children. Dobrev also designed a T-Shirt^[11] with Me to We Style, which gives 50% of its profits to Free the Children.^[12]
