Part 1 - MV Oakwood British Merchant Navy 1966-68 - Higher quality re-edit
This is a new and improved re-edit of this film which has been re-uploaded in a better format for You Tube. This is part 1 of a film shot by my dad in 1966-67 when he was in the British Merchant Navy. This film follows his travels aboard the bulk carrier Oakwood on his final voyage at sea from 06/12/1966 to 22/08/1967 and features images from South America (Chile), Japan and some rough sea footage from the Atlantic. I edited this film together and used music from his record and cd collection, some of it music from the 1960's which helps to give it that extra bit of authenticity. Check out my other videos for parts 2 and 3 of this film.

This is a new and improved re-edit of this film which has been re-uploaded in a better format for You Tube. This film follows his travels aboard the bulk carrier Oakwood on his final voyage at sea from 06/12/1966 to 22/08/1967. This part features footage of my dad working on the ship, mainly painting and looking like a scruffy caveman (check out the Rolling Stones hair cut). Other footage is mainly of ocean going and putting down anchor at their destination in Chile ready for loading up of ore for the return trip (see part 3 for this). I edited this film together and used music from his record and cd collection, some of it music from the 1960's which helps to give it that extra bit of authenticity. British Merchant Navy Theme Tune ,BBC Weather Storm Forecast
Dedicated to all British Merchant Seaman and Fishermen who have waited on the bridge of a ship or in the wheelhouse of a fishing boat at 0040 hrs in the dark of a stormy night waiting for the BBC Shipping Weather Forecast to come on with more good news for the next 24 hours at sea . I think we can all agree that this theme is the most unapplicable music in the middle of a gale ! In stormy weather and high seas it should be changed to Diana Ross "Ain't no Mountain High enough" or The Doors "Riders of the Storm'

Southern Steam - the naming of Merchant Navy 4-6-2 No.21C1 as 'Channel Packet' in
The SR Merchant Navy Class, also known as Bulleid Pacifics, Spam Cans or Packets, was a class of 30 air-smoothed 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotives designed for the Southern Railway of the United Kingdom by Oliver Bulleid. The Pacific design was chosen in preference to several others proposed by Bulleid. The first members of the class were constructed during the Second World War, and the last of the 30 locomotives in 1949. Incorporating a number of new developments in British steam locomotive technology, the design of the Packets was among the first to use welding in the construction process; this enabled easier fabrication of components during the austerity of the war and post-war economies. The locomotives featured thermic syphons and Bulleid's innovative, but controversial, chain-driven valve gear. The class members were named after the Merchant Navy shipping lines involved in the Battle of the Atlantic, and latterly those which used Southampton Docks, an astute publicity masterstroke by the Southern Railway, which operated Southampton Docks during the period. Due to problems with some of the more novel features of Bulleid's design, all members of the class were rebuilt by British Railways during the late 1950s, losing their air-smoothed casings in the process. First to emerge from Eastleigh Works in 1941 was No.21C1, seen here her naming ceremony (at Eastleigh) on 10th March that year.

All footage was recorded using an iphone 4.

35017 Belgian Marine clags thro Streatham Up Canterbury Special 10 Dec 2011
British Railways Rebuilt Merchant Navy Class No: 35017 Belgian Marine clags superbly past Streatham at the head of the UK Railtours Up Canterbury Christmas Special railtour from London-Victoria to Canterbury-West and return on Saturday 10th December 2011. Belgian Marine was hauling a monster load. 13 Mk 1's and I think the 67 was on for train-heating. I make that about 560 tons. Today's run was the 3rd one by Clan Line dressed-up as Belgian Marine. The 1st was 1 week ago and I filmed it departing London-Victoria. Today's train was unique in one respect. It's the only steam special in 2011 called Canterbury Special. Streatham is on a useful link-line for steam specials coming off the Southern main-line and linking up with the South Eastern main-line at Herne Hill so Belgian Marine can get back to London-Victoria at Platform 2. I heard Belgian Marine slowly chugging which is why I turned the camera on when I did. However, because of background noise you can't hear it until 00:40. Steam at Streatham is very rare. Belgian Marine's train was only the 4th to pass Streatham in the Up direction this year. Belgian Marine makes a wonderful display as it accelerates under the road-bridge that crosses the centre of the station. Just look at the exhaust lift up as Belgian Marine clears the bridge and there is a bit of a glow from the fire-box. Streatham has a simple two-track layout. The Down line (I was filming on the Up) is served by First Capital Connect trains to Sutton and ...
