''Harlequin'', known as ''Dark Forces'' in the USA, is a 1980 Australian film starring Robert Powell, Carmen Duncan, David Hemmings and Broderick Crawford. The screenplay is by Everett De Roche, the music by Brian May and the film is directed by Simon Wincer.

The film is a modern-day version of the Rasputin story, and the major characters have the same first names as Rasputin and the Romanov royal family, and their family name 'Rast' is simply 'Tsar' backwards. Hemmings plays an up-and-coming senator, Nick Rast, whose young son is terminally ill with leukaemia. A mysterious faith healer, Gregory Wolfe (Powell), appears and seems to cure the boy. Rast's wife Sandy (Duncan) falls in love with Wolfe, but the powerful interests behind Rast's career, represented by geriatric monster Doc Wheelan (Crawford) are less happy with events.

In Australia, ''Harlequin'' was released on an All Region DVD by Umbrella Entertainment on Wednesday, 27 October 2004. It was presented in a remastered 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen, and Special Features were an Audio Commentary by director Simon Wincer and producer Antony I. Ginnane, a theatrical trailer and a photo gallery.

In the US, ''Harlequin'' was released as ''Dark Forces'' by Image Ent. on 8 June 2004. It was presented in 2.35:1 Widescreen, with Behind The Scenes Photo Gallery, Filmographies, Isolated Music Score and an Audio Commentary by director Simon Wincer and producer Antony I. Ginnane.

Robert Powell (born 1 June 1944) is an English television and film actor, probably most famous for his title role in ''Jesus of Nazareth'' (1977) and as the fictional secret agent Richard Hannay. His distinctive voice has become well known in advertisements and documentaries.

He is also known for his role as Mark Williams in BBC One medical drama, ''Holby City'', and in the sitcom ''The Detectives'' alongside Jasper Carrott.

Biography

Early life

Powell was born in Salford, the son of Kathleen (née Davis) and John Wilson Powell.

Education

Powell was educated at Manchester Grammar School, an independent school for boys in the city of Manchester in north-west England, and later at the University of Salford. One of his classmates was Sir Ben Kingsley, another famous actor.

Career

Powell took up acting while an undergraduate. He had a small role in the original version of ''The Italian Job'' playing one of the gang, but had to wait a few years for his first success, playing scientist Toby Wren in the BBC's science fiction series, ''Doomwatch'' in 1970. Having been at his request killed off in the last episode of the original series, Powell became a pin-up and a household name, following up with starring roles in several BBC serials, including television adaptations of the novels ''Sentimental Education'' and ''Jude the Obscure''. He also appeared in the 1975 series ''Looking for Clancy'', based on the Frederic Mullally novel ''Clancy''.

For several years, Powell continued as a television regular, with occasional forays into film, notably as ''Mahler'' in 1974. He also notably played Captain Walker in the 1975 Ken Russell film version of ''Tommy''. His role had no lines at all and apart from a few early scenes during the overture with Ann-Margret, he is primarily seen through the mind of his son as played by Barry Winch (Young Tommy) and Roger Daltrey. In one of those scenes Captain Walker is shown in a crucifixion pose.

He then played Jesus Christ in the series ''Jesus of Nazareth'' following a successful second audition with Franco Zeffirelli. The series had an all star cast, including Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, Rod Steiger and James Mason. For this role, Powell was nominated for a BAFTA award, and collected the ''TVTimes'' Best Actor award for the same performance. Archive footage of his performance would later be used in Michael Moore's documentary, ''Capitalism: A Love Story'', although Powell's voice was dubbed off with alternate lines parodying the possibility of Jesus being a capitalist.

In 1975, Powell married his girlfriend, the Pan's People dancer Babs Lord, quickly and quietly, partly because he was about to start filming for ''Jesus of Nazareth'', and partly to overcome problems if she flew out to see him on location in Morocco. Both felt it would be easier if they were married.

On 23 November 1977, they had their son, Barney, followed in 1979 by a daughter, Kate.

In 1978, Powell took the leading role of Richard Hannay in the third film version of ''The Thirty Nine Steps''. It met with modest success, and critics compared Powell's portrayal of John Buchan's character favourably with his predecessors. His characterisation did indeed prove to be enduring, as almost ten years later a television series entitled simply ''Hannay'' appeared with Powell back in the role, (although the Buchan short stories on which the series was based were set in an earlier period than ''The Thirty-Nine Steps''). ''Hannay'' ran for two seasons.

In 1980 Powell appeared in the film ''Harlequin'' playing the Harlequin of the title who seems to have the power to cure the son of a powerful politician. For this performance, he won the Best Actor Award at the Paris Film Festival. In 1982, he won Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for his role in ''Imperativ''.

Powell then agreed to a request from his old friend and golf partner, comedian Jasper Carrott, taking the part of an incompetent detective in a succession of sketches that formed part of Carrott's television series. ''The Detectives'' was so popular that it was turned into a sitcom, Powell's first and only venture into this genre.

In 1984, Powell made his U.S. film debut in ''What Waits Below'' (as known as ''Secrets of the Phantom Caverns'').

In 1986, Powell narrated and co-starred in William C. Faure's popular miniseries ''Shaka Zulu''...with soccer legend Henry Cele in the title role. In 1992, he starred in the New Zealand World War I film ''Chunuk Bair'', as Sgt Maj Frank Smith. In 1993-1995, he was the voice actor of Dr. Livesey in ''The Legends of Treasure Island''.

Nowadays Powell appears in person less often, but his distinctive voice is frequently heard on voice-overs, advertisements, and as a narrator of television programmes such as ''Great Crimes and Trials'' and ''The Century of Warfare''. He has also narrated many audio books including ''The Thirty Nine Steps'', abridged versions of many of Alan Garner's books, and several abridged novels for 'The Talking Classics Collection'. Powell has also lent his voice to musical works, such as David Bedford's album ''The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'', or the 2002 rock opera ''The Hound of the Baskervilles'', by Clive Nolan and Oliver Wakeman, where he played the role of John Watson. He also made use of his narrating skills on two rock albums by Rick Wakeman called ''Cost of Living'' and The Gospels (1987).

On 29 October 2001 a state-of-the-art theatre named after him was opened at the University of Salford. In early 2005 he became a regular in the UK TV medical drama, ''Holby City'', where he remained for six years before departing to return to theatre. On 9 February 2008 he performed as narrator in Prokofiev's ''Peter and the Wolf'' with the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor Natalia Luis-Bassa in the North of England. He currently has a regular spot narrating literary passages on BBC4's ''The Book Quiz''.

Carmen Joan Duncan (born 7 July 1942 in Cooma, New South Wales) is an Australian actress.

Biography

Carmen Duncan is known to Australian audiences as a character actress in films and on television. Australian television roles included several episodes of the Australian series ''Hunter'' (1967) and she appeared for several months in the evening soap opera ''Number 96'' playing Helen Sheridan in 1973. From there, a role on the soap ''Certain Women'' followed. She later had an on-going role in ''Skyways'', and guest starred in several episodes of ''A Country Practice'' as Rowena Elliott, Terence Elliott's wife. Film roles include playing a lascivious, sadistic and murderous lesbian armed with a crossbow in exploitation film ''Turkey Shoot'' (1982).

She later emigrated to the United States where she acted on television. From October 1988 to September 1994, she portrayed Iris Cory Wheeler on the daytime soap opera ''Another World''. She succeeded Beverlee McKinsey in the role after a long absence. Many of Duncan's critics, including ''TV Guide'' Michael Logan, remarked that her accent sounded less American than her counterparts, making her seem out of place in the serial. As an actress, Duncan generally used a Cultivated Australian accent, which is similar to Received Pronunciation.

After leaving the ''Another World'' role in the mid-1990s, Duncan returned to Australia, where she acted in guest roles on television series and lampooned her former soap opera image on television commercials. In 2000 Duncan was diagnosed and successfully treated for early stage breast cancer. In 2003, she appeared as Anna Denton on ''CrashBurn''. In 2004, Duncan returned to the United States to fill in for Eileen Fulton as Lisa Grimaldi in three episodes of ''As the World Turns'' while Fulton was on emergency medical leave. Duncan continues to take permanent residence in Australia.

In 2006, Duncan switched hats from acting to take up a post as fundraising manager for the GO Fund, which is a devoted to research and treatment for gynaecological cancer in New South Wales. Duncan left the GO Fund in 2009. She currently serves as an Ambassador for the Breast Care Centre at the Royal Hospital for Women and as the Ambassador for Tenterfield Shire Council for Australia Day. As well, Duncan is actively involved in the Catholic Women's League of Sydney and campaigns for funding for awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, having lost her own grandson to the condition.

Duncan resides in Sydney and is a mother of two adult children, Duncan and Amelia. Her younger sister is actress Paula Duncan.

David Edward Leslie Hemmings (18 November 1941 – 3 December 2003) was an English film, theatre and television actor as well as a film and television director and producer.

He is noted for his role as the photographer in the drama mystery-thriller film ''Blowup'' (1966), directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. Early in his career, Hemmings was a boy soprano appearing in operatic roles. In his later acting career, he was known for his distinctive eyebrows and gravelly voice.

Career

Early performances

Hemmings was born in Guildford, Surrey. His education at Alleyn's School and the Glyn Grammar School (now the Glyn Technology School) led him to start his career performing as a boy soprano in several works by the composer Benjamin Britten, who formed a close friendship with him at this time. Most notably, Hemmings created the role of Miles in the opera ''Turn of the Screw'' (1954). His intimate, yet innocent, relationship with Britten is described in John Bridcut's book ''Britten's Children'' (2006). Although many commentators identified Britten's relationship with Hemmings as based on an infatuation, throughout his life Hemmings maintained categorically that Britten's conduct with him was beyond reproach at all times. Hemmings had earlier played the title role in Britten's ''The Little Sweep'' (1952), which was part of Britten's ''Let's Make An Opera!'' children's production.

Film and television work

Hemmings then moved on to acting and directing in the cinema. He made his first film appearance in ''The Rainbow Jacket'' (1954), but it was in the mid-sixties that he first became well known as a pin-up and film star.

Antonioni, who detested the "Method" way of acting, sought to find a fresh young face for the lead in his next production, ''Blowup''. It was then that he found Hemmings, at the time acting in small stage theatre in London.

Following ''Blowup'', Hemmings appeared in a string of major British films, including ''Camelot'' (1967), ''The Charge of the Light Brigade'' (1968) and ''Alfred the Great'' (1969) (in which he played the title role). His short stature, sleepy eyes and undershot jaw made him an unconventional leading man, but unconventional was right for the times, and he became one of the princes of the "swinging London" scene. In keeping with his standing as a 1960s icon, he also appeared in ''Barbarella'' (1968).

Around 1967, Hemmings was briefly considered for the role of Alex in a planned film version of Anthony Burgess's novel ''A Clockwork Orange'' (1962), which was to be based on a screen treatment by satirist Terry Southern and British photographer Michael Cooper. Cooper and The Rolling Stones rock band were reportedly upset by the move and it was decided to return to the original plan in which Mick Jagger, the lead vocalist of The Rolling Stones, would play Alex, with the rest of The Stones as his droog gang; the production was shelved after Britain's chief censor, the Lord Chamberlain, indicated that he would not permit it to be made.

Hemmings directed the film ''The 14'' (1973), which won the Silver Bear at the 23rd Berlin International Film Festival. An (Italian) cult movie in which Hemmings appeared was the thriller film ''Profondo Rosso'' (also known as ''Deep Red'' or ''The Hatchet Murders'') (1975) directed by Dario Argento.

He directed David Bowie and Marlene Dietrich in ''Schöner Gigolo, armer Gigolo'' (also known as ''Just a Gigolo'') (1978). The film was poorly received, Bowie describing it as "my 32 Elvis Presley movies rolled into one". Hemmings directed ''The Survivor'' (1981), based on James Herbert's 1976 novel of the same name, starring Robert Powell and Jenny Agutter.

Throughout the 1980s he also worked extensively as a director on television programmes including ''Quantum Leap'' (e.g., the series premiere), ''Magnum, P.I.'' (in which he also played characters in several episodes), ''The A-Team'' and ''Airwolf'', in which he also played the role of Doctor Charles Henry Moffet, Airwolf's twisted creator, in the pilot and the second-season episode "Moffett's Ghost" (a typographical error by the studio's titles unit). He once joked, "People thought I was dead. But I wasn't. I was just directing The A-Team." He directed the New Zealand film ''Race for the Yankee Zephyr'' (1981), which starred Ken Wahl, Lesley Ann Warren, Donald Pleasence and George Peppard.

Hemmings also directed the puzzle-contest video ''Money Hunt: The Mystery of the Missing Link'' (1984). He directed the television film ''The Key to Rebecca'' (1985), an adaptation of Ken Follett's 1980 novel of the same name. He also briefly served as a producer on the NBC series ''Stingray''.

Hemmings played a vindictive cop in the New Zealand film ''Beyond Reasonable Doubt'' (1980) about Arthur Allan Thomas (John Hargreaves), a New Zealand farmer jailed for the murder of Harvey and Jeanette Crewe but later pardoned. He directed the film ''Dark Horse'' (1992) and as an actor returned to the voyeuristic preoccupations of his ''Blowup'' character with a plum part as the Big Brother-esque villain in the season-three opener for the television series ''Tales From the Crypt''.

In later years, he had film roles including appearing as Cassius in ''Gladiator'' (2000), with Russell Crowe, as well as appearing in ''Last Orders'' (2001) and ''Spy Game'' (2001). He appeared as Mr. Schemerhorn in the film ''Gangs of New York'' (2002). One of his final film appearances was a cameo appearance in the cult film, ''Equilibrium'' (2002), shortly before his death.

Music

In 1967 Hemmings recorded a pop single "Back Street Mirror" (written by Gene Clark) and an album, ''David Hemmings Happens'', in Los Angeles. The album featured instrumental backing by several members of The Byrds, and was produced by Byrds mentor Jim Dickson.

Hemmings also later provided the narration for Rick Wakeman's progressive-rock album ''Journey to the Centre of the Earth'' (1974) – an adaptation of Jules Verne's science-fiction novel ''A Journey to the Center of the Earth'' (1864) – which was recorded live.

He starred as Bertie Wooster in the short-lived Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, ''Jeeves'' (1975).

People often confuse the actor David Hemmings with the talent artist by the same name who managed the careers of Ozzy Osbourne, The Mundanes, and Canadian rocker Pat Travers during the latter half of the 1970s.

Autobiography

Hemmings published his autobiography ''Blow Up... and Other Exaggerations – The Autobiography of David Hemmings'' (2004).

Personal life

He married four times, the most famous of his wives being the Fort Worth, Texas-born actress and long-term British resident, Gayle Hunnicutt, mother of his son, British actor Nolan Hemmings.

Death

Hemmings died, age 62, of a heart attack, in Bucharest, Romania, on the film set of ''Blessed'' (working title: ''Samantha's Child'') after playing his scenes for the day.

His funeral was held in Calne, Wiltshire, where he had made his home for several years.
