Bernina Express
Recorded August 15, 2011: One of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps. The Bernina Express is the highest and steepest train that runs in Switzerland. This winding mountain railway connects northern and southern Europe without the use of any toothed-wheel mechanism. A particular high-point of the ride is the panoramic view from the Bernina Express, as it passes mighty glaciers. The train makes short work of the 55 Tunnels, 196 bridges and slopes of up to 70 millimetres per metre of incline that are found along its route. The physical high-point of the RhB is Ospizio Bernina, at 2253 metres above sea level. Since summer 2008, the section between Thusis and Tirano has been classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Bernina Express: A day of palm trees and glaciers
The Bernina Express takes you from palm trees to glaciers--or the reverse--and back again, if you choose--all in a day. It's the highest mountain railway in the Alps. You'll see the effects of elevation as you sit back and enjoy the scenery, going from lush green valleys to rocky mountaintops that are above the treeline and in the clouds. The Bernina Railway is a single track metre gauge railway line forming part of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). It links the spa resort of St. Moritz, in the Canton of Grisons/Graubünden, Switzerland, with the town of Tirano, located right next to the Swiss border in Italy, via the 2253metres/7600feet high Bernina Pass. It also ranks as the highest adhesion railway in the Alps, and - with inclines of up to 7% - as one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. On 7 July 2008, the Bernina Railway and the Albula Railway, which also forms part of the RhB, were recorded in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, under the name Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes. The whole site is regarded as a cross border joint Swiss-Italian heritage area. The most famous trains operating on the Bernina Railway are known as the Bernina Express. The Bernina Express is an express train connecting Chur in Switzerland with Poschiavo and Tirano in Italy, by crossing the Swiss Alps from north to south. The trip on the Bernina Express through this World Heritage Site is a 4 hour railway journey across 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels and across the Bernina Pass on the highest point at 2253 metres in altitude. www.magictimelapse.ch A new series of timelapse movies which I recorded this summer and autumn in the Swiss Alps. Most locations are only reachable on foot, some need alpine hikes of 3-5 hours. I spent several weekends in cottages of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), where I shot these clips. The music is from Beethoven's great 7th Symphony, 2nd movement. Driving the Alps - BMW 335is European Delivery Trip
The goal was simple: an Ultimate driving experience. 1000 miles of twisty and windy driving nirvana, the scenic Alps across Germany, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland, all spread out over 10 days of pure Bliss.
This is a compilation of a few drives and mountain passes on my 335is immediately after I picked it up via the European Delivery program.
Notable mountain passes in the video: Stelvio pass, Timmelsjoch, Pordoi pass, Bernina pass, Fluela pass, San Bernadino pass, St. Gotthard pass, Grimsel pass, just to name a few.

A new series of timelapse movies which I recorded this summer and autumn in the Swiss Alps.

Shot with a Canon EOS 50D, Canon L 16-35/f2.8, Sigma 17-70/f2.8 and Sigma 10-20/f4.0
Intervals were usually a few seconds (2 - 7 seconds), exposure times slower than 1/100s to prevent TV flicker. Filters used: Hoya ND400, Hoya circular polarizer

Mit der Rhätischen Bahn von St. Moritz (1770 m) über den Bernina Pass (2256 m) bis nach Poschiavo (1014 m). The salient feature of the Albula/Bernina landscapes is the Rhaetian Railway. The Albula railway was completed in 1903, the Bernina railway in 1910. The Albula railway was recognised as a masterpiece of engineering from the outset. The Bernina railway (St. Moritz Tirano) immediately became the model for many projects throughout the Alps and the recognised standard for several railways that were built later. Today it holds a unique position worldwide: it is the highest altitude transalpine railway in Europe and one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. he surrounding landscape is an essential feature of the exceptional importance of the Albula and Bernina line, emphasising the direct link to the qualitatively unique railway structures as the railway runs through a very varied, rich cultural landscape. The railway engineering structures merge with the exceptional topography in a single spectacular whole. The choice of alignment was motivated by the wish to make the route particularly striking for tourism ie to emphasise the attractions of the landscape.
