Cullercoats, Tyne and Wear, UK
www.facebook.com www.ceepackaging.com twitter @ceepackaging www.facebook.com Cullercoats is located between Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. There is a semi-circular sandy beach with cliffs and caves, and the village is a popular destination for day-trippers. The name is thought to derive from Dove (or Culver) Cotes. Historically the village depended on fishing; there was also local coal mining in so-called bell pits. The coal was used to fire salt pans (now long gone) on the field now known as the boat field. As a port, Cullercoats was used to export both salt and coal. However, the salt industry declined and the growth of the railways led to coal shipments being relocated to better harbours. This left fishing as the main industry and two piers were built on either side of the harbour to provide shelter for the many open top fishing vessels, or cobles, launched from the harbour. The harbour is the home of the Dove Marine Laboratory, a research and teaching laboratory which forms part of the School of Marine Science and Technology within Newcastle University In 1848, a coble taking a pilot to a ship further out at sea capsized with the loss of all on board. In response to this disaster the local landowner, the Duke of Northumberland funded the setting up of an RNLI lifeboat station. The following year a second disaster, this time costing 20 lifeboat crew their lives, prompted the Duke to sponsor a competition to design a self-righting lifeboat. The resulting boat, the Percy was ...

Tyne & Wear Transport Miscellany 1
Filmed in the period 1990 - 1994 this is one of several films of the integrated transport system in the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne area. Locations seen include: Airport, Callerton Parkway, Heworth. Some filming was done 'documentary style' where short scenes were wanted, not long sequences showing trains coming, stopping and going. Alas, no footage from the platforms at Airport station, as a uniformed killjoy said that the use of cameras is forbidden (their own CCTV systems excepted).

Tyne & Wear Transport Miscellany 2
Filmed in the period 1990 - 1994 this is one of several films of the integrated transport system in the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne area. This film shows Tynemouth station, the metro, the former LNER 3rd rail 'Tyneside Electrics' trains and some buses - one with an open top! Tynemouth is a coastal town to the east of Newcastle Upon Tyne. In fine weather people come here to relax on the beach - I've done this myself, and it was doubly pleasent knowing that whilst I was sitting on the beach back home in London it was raining and the washing put out to dry in the garden became soaked instead! Tynemouth station dates from 1882 and at one time was well known for its attractive floral displays. However it fell on hard times and as is seen in the film whilst some of it has been restored the rest still needs money spending on it to restore it to its former glory.

Tyne & Wear Transport Miscellany 4 / British Bus Snapshots - Tyneside.
Filmed in the period 1990 - 1994 this is one of several films of the integrated transport system in the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne area. The locations seen are: Four Lane Ends station Regent Centre station Newcastle City Centre. The Shields Ferry (waterbus). The first two locations primarily focus on the bus / rail interchange aspect of an 'integrated transport system'. The intended use of this footage was a video about urban transport systems, and therefore some filming was done 'documentary style' where short scenes were wanted, not long sequences showing buses coming, stopping and going. The ferry / waterbus was filmed on a very wet day - you can hear the rain! Because of the weather all filming was 'hand held'. It was intended to return and film better sequences on a sunny day but this never happened. The documentary film used about 3 seconds of this footage, and a some of what I filmed was (alas) so bad that I was too ashamed to include it in this film.
