NewsChannel 8 is an American regional cable news television network that is owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group, and managed by the company's ABC-affiliated station WJLA-TV (channel 7) in Washington D.C. The channel provides 24-hour news coverage primarily focused on Washington, D.C., northern Virginia and suburban areas of Maryland within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The channel shares studio facilities and offices with WJLA-TV and the Rosslyn-based Politico in Arlington, Virginia. NewsChannel 8 reaches more than 1.2 million cable television households within the D.C metropolitan area.
The channel was launched on October 7, 1991 as NewsChannel 8; it was founded by the Allbritton Communications Company, which had been the longtime owners of WJLA-TV. On August 9, 2010, the channel was rebranded as TBD TV, in order to associate it with the recently established news website TBD.com, which provided news content for both the channel and WJLA; Allbritton subsequently reverted its news channel's branding to the original NewsChannel 8 name in February 2011.
Tampa Bay is a large natural harbor and estuary connected to the Gulf of Mexico on the west central coast of Florida, comprising Hillsboro Bay, McKay Bay, Old Tampa Bay, Middle Tampa Bay, and Lower Tampa Bay. The surrounding area is home to about 4 million residents, making it a heavily used commercial and recreational waterway but putting much stress on the bay's ecosystem, which once teemed with enough wildlife to easily support an extensive indigenous culture. Much greater care has been taken in recent decades to mitigate the effects of human habitation on Tampa Bay, and water quality has slowly improved over time.
The term "Tampa Bay" is sometimes used as shorthand to refer to all or parts of the Tampa Bay area, which comprises many towns and cities in several counties surrounding the large body of water. Local marketing and branding efforts (including several professional sports teams, tourist boards, and chambers of commerce) commonly use the moniker "Tampa Bay", furthering the misconception that it is the name of a particular municipality when this is not the case.

In 1969, as the company's media properties grew and diversified, it was renamed Media General. Media General is headquartered in Richmond and the San Francisco Bay Area is its largest market.
In 2013 and 2014, Media General expanded significantly through its mergers with Young Broadcasting and LIN Media; as of the latter merger, Media General is now run by the principal staff of LIN Media, including CEO Vincent L. Sadusky.
The conglomeration of newspapers was founded in 1940 when owners of Richmond, Virginia's two newspapers, the Times-Dispatch and News Leader, merged them to form Richmond Newspapers, Inc. In 1969, as the company's media properties grew and diversified, it was renamed Media General.
In 1982 the company acquired The William B. Tanner Company (previously known as Pepper-Tanner), a commercial radio jingle production company headquartered in Memphis. It was divested in 1988.
In 1996, Media General acquired Park Acquisitions, the holding company for Park Communications, formerly owned by the media entrepreneur Roy H. Park.
The Spirit is a fictional masked crimefighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner. He first appeared June 2, 1940 as the main feature of a 16-page, tabloid-sized, newsprint comic book insert distributed in the Sunday edition of Register and Tribune Syndicate newspapers; it was ultimately carried by 20 Sunday newspapers, with a combined circulation of five million copies during the 1940s. "The Spirit Section", as the insert was popularly known, continued until October 5, 1952. It generally included two other, four-page strips (initially Mr. Mystic and Lady Luck), plus filler material. Eisner was the editor, but also wrote and drew most entries—after the first few months, he had the uncredited assistance of writer Jules Feiffer and artists Jack Cole and Wally Wood, though Eisner's singular vision for the character was a unifying factor.
From the 1960s to 1980s, a handful of new Eisner Spirit stories appeared in Harvey Comics and elsewhere, and Warren Publishing and Kitchen Sink Press variously reprinted the newspaper feature in black-and-white comics magazines and in color comic books. In the 1990s and 2000s, Kitchen Sink Press and DC Comics also published new Spirit stories by other writers and artists.

This was Tampa Bay broadcasting icon Gayle Sierens' last day at WFLA Channel 8 after 38 years in broadcasting, 30 of them in news and 8 in sports. Today, the station gathered around to celebrate her, one last time. Jennifer Leigh has already taken over the 11:00 p.m. newscast and Stacie Schaible will take over the 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. newscasts, starting tomorrow as she will continue at 4:00 and 5:30 p.m. This was the open to Gayle's last-ever 6:00 p.m. newscast on WFLA Channel 8 and this was her last newscast. A half-hour special was shown on this night at 7:30 p.m. to celebrate Gayle Sierens' 38-years at WFLA. The posting of this video is designed to facilitate criticism, commentary, scholarship, and research relating to the television broadcasting industry, and for purposes of historic ...

“WFLA is raising the bar on our ongoing commitment to protect our community."
Here is a resynchced close with The Spirit of Tampa Bay theme used on WFLA-TV in Tampa. This theme is in my opinion of the best locally exclusive image campaigns ever. WFLA used this theme from 1982-1985.
On February 14th, 2005. WFLA-TV, the NBC affiliate for the Tampa-St. Petersburg market celebrated it's 50th Anniversary. WFLA was the second television station on the air in the market, but it is the oldest active station since the first station, WSUN-TV Channel 38 went dark in 1970. This is Part 1 covering the birth of the station and the decade of the 1950s. WFLA-TV signed on Valentine's Day 1955 with a live broadcast of the Gasparilla Pirate Festival. The station was owned by the Tribune along with WFLA radio (AM 970 and FM 93.3, now WFLZ). Largely because of its newspaper background, it was the early ratings leader in Tampa until WTVT passed it in 1962. Arch Deal and Bill Henry were the prominent faces of WFLA's newscasts in the 1960s. Arch Deal's tenure was abruptly cut short in 197...

WFLA Tampa meteorologist John Winter is remembered by anchors Jennifer Leigh and Bill Ratliff on the morning news program where he frequently appeared, on April 6, 2007, the morning after his death.
This was a very brief history of WFLA Channel 8, Tampa/St. Petersburg's NBC affiliate. This set of 2 segments were shown November 25th and 26th, 1997 during Newschannel 8 at 6. My apoIogies about the video quality, it was taped off of an OTA signal from my parents house in Port Richey, FL. Also check out the 50th Anniversary of WFLA-TV on my channel!!
It's cold outside in the middle of the winter and my brain's in the fridge
(Would you know what shape I'm in)
Point things in the better I'm lucky if I even give in to the sin
(Would you know what shape I'm in)
And it's all been luck until now
Caught in the race of up to down
Photography mixed in the monogamy keepin' my world happenin'
(would you know what shape I'm in)
I know that I'm better when I know that you are better and I'll hold you again
(would you know what shape I'm in)
And its all been luck until now
Caught in the race of up to down
And it's all been luck until now
I only hope that you're still 'round me now
And it's gonna rage
it's gonna stay with you always
Every second counts on you to prove you're off the ground
It's cold outside in the middle of the winter and my brains in the fridge
Point things in the better I'm lucky if I even give in to the sin
And its all been luck until now
And its all been luck until now
And its all been luck until now
Caught in the race of up to down now
And its all been luck until now
Caught in the race of up to down
And it's all been luck until now
I only hope that you're still 'round me
