Philip Catherine (born 27 October 1942) is a Belgian jazz guitarist.

Biography[link]

He was born in London from an English mother and Belgian father.

He began playing in the 1960s with Lou Bennett, Dexter Gordon and Stéphane Grappelli. He was then a member of the Jean-Luc Ponty quintet, right after he recorded his first album, Stream, produced by Frenchman Sacha Distel. The album was recorded in 1970, in Paris, and released in 1971 on Warner Bros. Records. A year later, he met John Scofield, Ran Blake, George Benson and more musicians in Boston.

In early 1976 Catherine replaced Jan Akkerman in the Dutch rock group Focus and appeared on one album with the band, Focus con Proby which also featured American singer P. J. Proby.

In the '80's he played extensively with the Chet Baker Trio. He is featured on several of Chet's albums. He also played with Charlie Mingus who named Catherine Young Django.

AllAboutJazz critique Ed Kopp in his review of Catherine's album Guitar Groove said:

• "Guitar Groove is an astoundingly lyrical effort from a guitarist in his prime. It should appeal equally to fans of mainstream jazz and fusion, and to anyone who appreciates superior jazz musicianship."^[1]

Another AllAboutJazz critique John Kelman in his review of Cathrine's 2008 album Guitars Two said:

• "Sometimes it's not a good thing to get branded too early in your career. Called the young Django" by Charles Mingus and operating in the same fusion sphere as John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell, Belgian Philip Catherine was pegged in the '70s as a firebrand guitarist, albeit an unabashedly lyrical one. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but Catherine's career, now nearing its sixth decade, has always been about a lot more than powerhouse fusion chops, something Guitars Two demonstrates in spades. Catherine's ability to reference traditional markers from Reinhardt to Wes Montgomery, while sounding like nobody but himself, makes Guitars Two the kind of career high point that ought to dispel the guitarist's early branding. He is now considered as the grandfather of Belgian jazz as he continues to play on the now very active Belgian jazz scene. He won the first Belgian Golden Django (in 1995) as best French-speaking artist.

Alison Brie (born December 29, 1982)^[1] is an American actress best known for portraying Annie Edison on Community, Trudy Campbell on Mad Men, and Rebecca Walters in Scream 4.

Early life[link]

Brie was born Alison Brie Schermerhorn in Hollywood, California. Her mother, Joanne (Brenner), works at the non-profit child care agency Para Los Niños, and her father, Charles Terry Schermerhorn, is a musician and freelance entertainment reporter.^[2][3] Brie began her career acting onstage at the Jewish Community Center in Southern California (her mother is Jewish).^[4][5] She graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with a bachelor's in theater in 2005.^[6] Prior to becoming a television actress, Brie had worked as a clown at birthday parties, and performed in theater in California.^[7]

For a time, Brie studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.^[8]

One of Brie's first television roles was the minor character Nina, a novice hairdresser, on Hannah Montana. She then went on to star in the web series My Alibi, and was chosen for the role of Trudy Campbell in Mad Men. She is also a main cast member on Community as Annie Edison.

On April 15, 2010, Brie co-hosted G4's Attack of the Show!.^{[citation needed]} Brie has also appeared for a short segment on the G4 show, Web Soup.^{[citation needed]} She had a role in the 2010 film Montana Amazon.^[9] She made Maxim's 2010 Hot 100 list at number 99^[10] and Maxim's 2011 Hot 100 list at number 49.^[11] She had a role in the horror film Scream 4, as Sidney Prescott's assistant, Rebecca Walters. The film was released on April 15, 2011.^[12] She appeared alongside Jason Segel and Emily Blunt in The Five-Year Engagement, which was released April 27, 2012.

Philip Haywood Glenister (born 10 February 1963) is a British actor, known for his role as DCI Gene Hunt in British television series Life On Mars and its sequel Ashes To Ashes.

Television and films[link]

In the early 1990s, Glenister appeared in various TV series including Heartbeat, Dressing for Breakfast and Silent Witness. In 1997, he guest starred in Sharpe's Justice as Richard Sharpe's half-brother Matt Truman.^[1] He played William Dobbin in the 1998 mini-series Vanity Fair.^[2]

From 1998–99, Glenister co-starred as a mini-cab driver who aspires to be a rock star in the series Roger Roger. He played factory boss Mack Mackintosh in the first three series of Clocking Off from 2000–02.^[3] In 2001, he appeared in two of the Hornblower TV movies as Horatio's antagonist Gunner Hobbs.^[4]

Glenister played the photographer who took nude photos for a Women's Institute fundraising calendar in the 2003 feature film Calendar Girls.^[5] Also in 2003, he appeared in the mini-series State of Play.^[6] Glenister played the German commandant, Baron Heinrich Von Rheingarten, in the 2004 mini-series Island at War about the Occupation of the Channel Islands during World War II.^[7] He played social reformer and estate manager Mr. Carter in the 2007 BBC costume drama Cranford, as part of a cast including Judi Dench and Francesca Annis.^[8]

Glenister is probably best known for his role as DCI Gene Hunt in Life On Mars (2006-07), co-starring with John Simm as Sam Tyler,^[9] and its sequel Ashes to Ashes with Keeley Hawes as Alex Drake.^[10] Glenister also worked with Simm on State of Play and Clocking Off and the 2008 crime film Tuesday. Upon announcement of the film, Glenister joked that he and Simm were contractually obliged to work with each other once a year.^[11]

He starred as demon hunter Rupert Galvin in the 2009 ITV drama Demons. He used an American accent for the role,^[12] which received some criticism from reviewers.^[13][14] After deciding not to do a second series,^[15] he said he had problems with the role and felt that he may have been miscast.^[16]

In 2011, Glenister reunited with John Simm once more in the Sky TV mini-series Mad Dogs about a group of old friends whose holiday in Majorca takes an unexpected turn.^[17] After a successful reception, Glenister returned for a second run of the series in 2012.^[18]

Glenister had a small role (credited as 'Poker Friend') in Woody Allen's You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger in 2010 and plays Charles Forestier in a 2011 feature film of Guy de Maupassant's Bel Ami.^[19]

He stars in the 2011 conspiracy thriller Hidden on BBC One,^[20] and he played Captain Smollett in Sky1's adaptation of Treasure Island, broadcast at Christmas 2011.^[21]

Personal life[link]

Philip Glenister was born in Harrow and grew up in Hatch End in Middlesex. He is the son of director John Glenister, and his brother is actor Robert Glenister. He attended Hatch End Comprehensive School (now Hatch End High School), and with the encouragement of his then-sister-in-law Amanda Redman to pursue acting and attend drama school, the Central School of Speech and Drama. Glenister has been married to the actress Beth Goddard since 2006, and they have two children; Millie and Charlotte.^[23]

On 28 October 2008 on the Paul O'Grady TV show he claimed to be a fan of non-league football team Wealdstone.^[24] He is also a well known Arsenal fan and a keen golfer.

He is patron of the charity Momentum in Kingston upon Thames, which aims to help children and the families of children undergoing treatment for cancer in Surrey.^[25]
