CERN Director General Rolf Dieter Heuer talks with Edie Lush at Hub Culture
Professor Heuer talks with Executive Editor Edie Lush about CERN's discoveries. Professor Heuer promises a major discovery this year. CERN will build on the 'intriguing fluctuations' it observed in 2011. It will either discover the final elementary particle - the Higgs Boson particle - which gives mass to fundamental particles - or they will discover that it doesn't exist. If CERN discovers that it doesn't exist, part of physics will need to be rewritten.

Interview with Rolf Heuer, CERN Director General
Date- 19th Nov 09 Source- cdsweb.cern.ch Questions : 1. How exciting is it for you to be the CERN Director General at a moment when the LHC is very close to producing data for the first time? 2. What do you expect the LHC to find at the assigned energy for this first run at 3.5 TeV per beam? What would be your best wish? 3. What are the chances that it discovers what you expext? 4. Can summarize the planning for the next few months? And later? 5. What is the historical importance of the LHC in scientific research in general? 6. What spin offs on society can we expect from the LHC?

Spotlight On CERN - The LHC Is Back!
www.facebook.com ... Spotlight On CERN - The LHC Is Back! Geneva, 20 November 2009. Particle beams are once again circulating in the worlds most powerful particle accelerator, CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This news comes after the machine was handed over for operation on Wednesday morning. A clockwise circulating beam was established at ten o'clock this evening. This is an important milestone on the road towards first physics at the LHC, expected in 2010. --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- Its great to see beam circulating in the LHC again, said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. Weve still got some way to go before physics can begin, but with this milestone were well on the way. The LHC circulated its first beams on 10 September 2008, but suffered a serious malfunction nine days later. A failure in an electrical connection led to serious damage, and CERN has spent over a year repairing and consolidating the machine to ensure that such an incident cannot happen again. The LHC is a far better understood machine than it was a year ago, said CERN's Director for Accelerators, Steve Myers. Weve learned from our experience, and engineered the technology that allows us to move on. Thats how progress is made. Recommissioning the LHC began in the summer, and successive milestones have regularly been passed since then. The LHC reached its operating temperature of 1.9 Kelvin, or about -271 Celsius, on 8 October ...

The fourth phase of CERN openlab was officially launched during a meeting of its board of sponsors taking place at CERN1 on 8 and 9 May. CERN openlab is a unique public-private partnership between CERN and leading information technology companies HP, Intel, Oracle, Siemens, with contribution from Huawei for this new phase. Its mission is to accelerate the development of cutting-edge solutions to be used by the worldwide community working on LHC data. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest particle accelerator, generates hundreds of millions of particle collisions each second. To record, store and analyse these vast amounts of collisions present a massive data challenge: the LHC produces roughly 20 million Gigabytes of data each year. CERN openlab ...

CERN In Focus
A video by CERN providing updates on CERN's activies on 6 week basis. Date- 5th March 2008. Source- cdsweb.cern.ch 'First edition 2008 of Cern in Focus. On behalf of the audiovisual team, a selection of the latest videos filmed at CERN. Every six weeks, we will bring you the latest in CERN's activities, from LHC start up to the Computing Grid, featuring the experiments and many other goings-on at CERN. The agenda of this first edition of CERN in Focus features the visit of the prime minister of Malta, Lawrence Gonzi... CMS and the final descent of the YE-1 end cap... The departure of UA1 magnets to Japan... The start up of sectors 4 and 5... And finally, in our sports round up... We'll talk about football. New in brief this month... The final bolt is in place : On 7th November, in the bowels of the LHC tunnel, CERN's Director General Robert Aymar tightened a gold-plated bolt for the last arc interconnection of sector 1-2. This symbolic gesture marks the completion of all the arc interconnections of the LHC. Last welding work: it was never going to be an easy task. On this day last year just one sector had been completed, but now all eight are ready. All in all, around 1700 magnets have been connected together, requiring a total of about 65000 electrical 'splices' of superconducting cables and 40000 (that's 10km worth!) of leak-tight welds. ATLAS: Anna: The 8th and 15th February respectively saw the transport and descent of the small wheel for the ATLAS experiment at point ...

What's new @CERN ? 2 LHC performance, a journey to the particle source and this past month's news.
LHC performance, a journey to the particle source and this past month's news. 30 March 2010 -- a milestone for the Large Hadron Collider, the most powerful particle accelerator in the world. On this day the LHC started up at unprecedented energy levels. Since then, particle collisions continue to occur in the detectors and their analysis holds promises for new physics discoveries. In this edition of What's new at CERN, we will report on the performance of this machine and talk about how its operating mode will change in a few days. The keywords for today? Performance -- magnets -- experiments -- ions - protons -- the future Today we are joined by, Steve Myers, Director for Accelerators and Technology, and Yves Schutz, Physicist in the ALICE experiment. CERN: Exploring the frontiers of knowledge
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research. We conduct fundamental research in physics to study the basic constituents of matter — the elementary particles. By studying what happens when very energetic particles collide, physicists can learn more about the laws of nature. Founded in 1954, the CERN Laboratory sits astride the Franco--Swiss border near Geneva. It was one of Europe's first joint ventures and now has 20 Member States.
