Konstantin
Konstantin is a new novel by Tom Bullough, which tells the story of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the founding father of the Soviet space programme. Konstantin grew up in a poor family in the Russian provinces, and was deafened as a child due to scarlet fever. But he went on to invent the first theoretically sound proof of the viability of space travel, pressurised space suits, space stations, and much more. Here, Alice Lagnado interviews Tom Bullough about his book. You can find out more about Tom's book at www.tombullough.com

Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky[1] (17 September [OS 5 September] 1857 -- 19 September 1935) was an Imperial Russian and Soviet rocket scientist and pioneer of the astronautic theory. Along with his followers the German Hermann Oberth and the American Robert H. Goddard, he is considered to be one of the founding fathers of rocketry and astronautics.[2] His works later inspired leading Soviet rocket engineers such as Sergey Korolyov and Valentin Glushko and contributed to the success of the Soviet space program. Tsiolkovsky spent most of his life in a log house on the outskirts of Kaluga, about 200 km (120 mi) southwest of Moscow. A recluse by nature, he appeared strange and bizarre to his fellow townsfolk. Dreams Of Another World
"Earth is the cradle of humanity, but we can't live in a cradle forever" (Konstantin Tsiolkovsky). Who are we? Where do we come from? What if the answer is out there? Our minds are capable of transporting us to other solar systems, but no such journey is humanly possible yet ...

21st of July 2012: A tribute to the 43rd anniversary of the first Moon landing
Exactly 43 years ago on 21 July 1969, 03-00 UTC the first people landed on the Moon , in the Sea of Tranquility/Mare Tranquillitatis (Apollo 11 mission). Neil Armstrong shortly after, uttered: "TRANQUILITY BASE HERE. THE EAGLE HAS LANDED. A SMALL STEP FOR (A) MAN. A GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND" That was unanimously the peak of mankind's space exploration. Song used: Xerxes - Time for Revolution (Swiss Prog rock/metal, 1993) Important quotes on Space Exploration : "Man must rise above the Earth -- to the top of the atmosphere and beyond -- for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives. " - Socrates, 500 BC "Given ships or sails adapted to the breezes of heaven, there will be those who will not shrink from even that vast expanse." - Johannes Kepler, letter to Galileo, 1610. "In the universe, space travel may be the normal birth pangs of an otherwise dying race. A test. Some races pass, some fail." - Robert Heinlein (author) "A new space race has begun, and most Americans are not even aware of it. [It] involves the whole human species in a contest against time. To save the Earth we must look beyond it, to interplanetary space. To prevent the collapse of civilization and the end of the world as we know it, we must understand that our planet does not exist in isolation." - Ben Bova "Mankind will not remain on the earth forever, but, in search of light and space, will at first timidly penetrate beyond the limits of the atmosphere and then finally conquer the ...

Mars Gravity Simulator, Adam Norton - Performance Space 2011
Mars Gravity Simulator is an attempt to recreate the experience of walking on Mars. Inspired by the lunar gravity simulators developed for NASA’s Apollo Space Program in the 1960s, the parameters of a lunar gravity simulator are recalculated to simulate gravity on Mars. A test subject, or ‘terranaut’, is suspended parallel to the Earth’s surface by a series of harnesses along his or her body. A tilted circular walking platform is introduced at an incline of 63° from the horizontal. The terranaut is brought into direct contact with the platform by the angle of pivot of the ropes, which are adjusted to a comparable angle to that of the platform. This produces a virtual sense of gravity of 38% of the Earth’s gravity in respect to the experience of the terranaut, and equal to gravity on the Martian surface.
Almost exactly 50 years ago, 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin rocketed out of the Earth’s atmosphere and became the first human to orbit the planet. Since then, 12 people have stepped foot on the surface of the Moon. Nine of them are still alive. Mars Gravity Simulator is a plea for that historic time not to become a footnote of our history. To quote the Russian space visionary Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in 1911, “the Earth is the cradle of humanity, but mankind cannot stay in the cradle forever”.
Adam Norton’s work deals with analogue machines before they disappeared into the black hole of the digital void. He has exhibited widely in Australia and has shown work in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. In 2008, for the City of Sydney’s ‘Laneways’ project, Norton launched three armoured personnel carriers onto the streets of Sydney.
Represented by Gallery 9, Sydney, and Gallerysmith, Melbourne.

Technology Update. Episode 2
Springtime is when people in Russia (and across the former Soviet Union) gather to celebrate sending the first man into space. For the second edition of Technology Update, host Paul Tadich joins in the celebrations. We travel to Kaluga, home of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky -- the Russian father of cosmonautics who designed rockets and space stations more than a hundred years ago. We travel to Star City to find out how to train to become a cosmonaut in Russia's space tourism program. Finally, we travel to Pyatigorsk, in the northern Caucasus, to witness a revolution in small-craft aviation.
