[edit] Musical style

Captain Dan & the Scurvy Crew combines elements from hip hop music genres such as gangsta rap, nerdcore hip hop, and crunk with Baroque and Classical instrumentation, usually achieved through the use of synthesizers and other methods associated with computer music.

Lyrically, the group discusses a number of pirate-related subjects but with a rap-styled twist. Life on the high seas, threats against rival pirate crews, and recreational drug use are common themes addressed by lead vocalist and lyricist "Captain" Dan Dolan and a cast of supporting vocalists. Also some of their songs are more dirty sounding and explicit.

Influences cited by the group include Davy Jones, and Blackbeard.[1]

[edit] Biography

Captain Dan & the Scurvy Crew was formed in 2006 by friends Dan Dolan and Brad Podray as a musical side-project. Other musicians have also contributed to the group's works, including Alex Zakak, Scott Dolan, Brian Kenig, Chris Ortega, ZealouS1, Phil Brainerd, and Shivaame Timbers. Much of the group's music has been the result of collaboration between individuals on the internet.

The group has released four albums, Authentic Pirate Hip-Hop, Rimes of the Hip-Hop Mariners, From the Seas to the Streets and recently, Divide the Plunder. The group's albums were officially released on International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19), starting in 2006. (The one exception to this was 2008, when, instead of releasing an album, the band leaked 3 tracks to the album From the Seas to the Streets.[1]) In addition to offering their albums for sale through Nonexistent Records, a record label created by Dolan and Podray, the group offers its music for free via Internet downloads as a means of self-promotion.

Captain Dan & the Scurvy Crew has appeared on a number of radio talk shows, including "The Awful Show", World of Warcraft Radio's [EPIC], "Steppin' to the Bad Side", and KROQ-FM's "Kevin and Bean". The group was also featured in the October 2008 issue of Blender magazine as part of a featurette on Nerdapalooza.

Captain Dan & the Scurvy Crew appeared on America's Got Talent in the Summer of 2012, only to be turned down by the crowd and the judges, with notable criticism from Howard Stern, who described the act as "very stupid", "moronic", "idiotic", and finally, "pathetic". Howard Mandel felt that he would have liked the group more if they had been performing a restaurant novelty act and provided a chicken dinner, to which Howard Stern agreed.[2]
